Practically every selection in this volume has been tried out in class work and in public contests; hence the major title of "Winning Declamations." Although some "old favorites" are included, a large proportion of the prose selections, and several of the poems, have never before appeared in a work of this character. The declamations are intended for training the public speaker, and not the dramatic reader or mere entertainer. The element of interest, however, has been a controlling factor, hence declamations have been chosen that present vivid pictures, concrete situations, or advocate principles and policies that are of present moment. In other words, the selections are of such a character that a pupil may adopt the words as his own and speak them with the purpose of convincing and persuading a present-day audience.
