3. The assets of an insolvent estate amount to £2,342 10s. 2d and the liabilities to £4,573 12s. 4d. Preferential claims, which have to be paid in full, amount to £131, 4s. 8d., and legal expenses to £120 10s. What dividend can be declared, and what will a creditor receive to whom the insolvent owes £945 10s. 6d. ? 4. A man sells his house for £950, £50 to be paid down and the rest to be paid at the end of nine months. If the buyer wishes to pay the whole off at once, what amount should he pay so that the seller receives an exact equivalent? Bank interest at 3 per cent. 5. A grass lawn is in the shape of a rectangle, 20 yards long and 12 yards wide. It is surrounded by a path 7 ft. wide. Find the cost of asphalting this path at 1s. 3s. per square yard.

6. Find to the nearest penny the amount of £650 put out at compound interest for 4 years at 3 per cent. per annum. Then find the amount at the end of 8 years.

7. A bill of £680 four months hence is made out on the 2nd Oct. It is discounted on Nov. 6th. Taking interest at the rate of 3 per cent. per annum, find (1) the true discount, (2) banker's discount.

8. A man invests two-thirds of his capital in 3 per cent. stock at 94 and the remainder in 3 per cent. at 104. His total income amounts to £119 2s. 6d. Find the sum invested in each stock, and also the interest per cent. earned by the capital.

COMMERCIAL GEOGRAPHY.

1. By what routes does the wheat grown in the United States and Canada reach its markets?

2. Name the chief countries engaged in the meat business, describe their comparative advantages, and mention their principal customers.

3. Name the chief steamship lines trading to Australasia, and give their termini.

4. Give the chief shipbuilding towns of the United Kingdom, and state why they are important for this industry.

5. Where are the following materials of commerce produced? What are their uses? What countries chiefly consume them?

Maize, rice, beet, copper, ramie, esparto grass, manures, cod, asphalt, indigo.

6. What are monsoons, and what influence have they on the production and commerce of India and Australia.

7. On the accompanying map write the names of the towns indicated by numbers, and state for what they are important.
