FELLOW OF ORIEL COLLEGE, OXFORD
ARRANGED FOR YOUNG PERSONS.
A NEW EDITION, WITH VOTES,
SOLD AT THE DEPOSITORIIS:
AND BY ALL BOOKSELLERS.
The Frontispiece, after a drawing by Fahey, is taken from the top of the Bostal (a diagonal path leading from the bottom of Selborne Hill, through the wood, to the top), and shows the house, formerly the residence of Gilbert White, in the centre; the Church and Parsonage on the left; the valley between the Lithe and Dorton Wood beyond ; and in the extreme distance, Crooks
l borough Hill, near Farnham.—The view looks nearly E. by N.
From Lady DOVER, Daughter of LORD CARLISLE, to HENRY AGAR
ELLIS, now LORD CLIFFORD, when Eight Years old.
MY DEAR LITTLE BOY,
THE first time I read the new edition of WHITE'S
NATURAL HISTORY OF SELBORNE, I could not help thinking frequently how much you would be pleased with some passages in it.
This induced me to read it over again, with a view of arranging it for your amusement.
I am aware that, even in its present form, the work contains many expressions and subjects above your age ; but I believe you will prefer overcoming these difficulties by your own efforts, rather than by any attempt on my part to suit the Author's meaning to your capacity.
