wakened out of his sleep, and said unto me, what seest thou ? and I said, I have looked, and behold, a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: and two olive-trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. So I answered, and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, what are these, my lord ? then the angel that talked with me, answered, and said unto me, knowest thou not what these be ? and I said, no, my lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, this is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. Who art thou, O great mountain ? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain : and he shall bring forth the head-stones thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.

JOSHUA, CHAP. II.

Vauyishloch Joshua. And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim

two men to spy secretly, saying, go, view the land, even Jericho; and they went and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there. And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country, and the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country. And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, there came men unto me, but I wist pot whence they were: and it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went, I wot not; pursue after them quickly, for ye shall overtake them. But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof. And men pursued after them the way to Jordan, unto the fords; and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate. And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;

HAPHTARAH BY-AU-AU-LOTHCHO;

ZECHARIAH, CHAP, II.

Roney Visimchey. Sing and rejoice, 0 daughter of Zion: for lo,

I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord: and many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto thee; and the Lord shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again. Be silent, О all flesh, before the Lord : for he is raised up out of his holy habitation. And he shewed me Joshua the high priest, standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the Lord said unto Satan, the Lord rebuke thee, O Satan, even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem, rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. And I said, let them set a fair mitre upon his head : so they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments; and the angel of the Lord stood by. 'And the angel of the Lord protested unto Joshua, saying, thus saith the Lord of hosts, if thou' wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt - keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shält also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by. Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH. For behold, the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes : behold, will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lopd of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. In that day, saith the Lord of ħaşts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine, and under the fig-trée.' And the angel that taken with me, came again and waked me, as a man that is

teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born. And God hearkened unto the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field : but Manoah her husband was not with her. And the woman made haste, and ran, and shewed her husband, and said unto him, behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day. And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, art thou the man that spakest unto the woman and he said, I am. And Manoah said, now let thy words come to pass, how shall we order the child ? and how shall we do unto him ? and the angel of the Lord said unto Manoah, of all that I said unto the woman let her beware. She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe. And Manoah said unto the angel of the Lord, I pray thee, let us detain thee until we shall have made ready a kid for thee. And the angel of the Lord said unto Manoah, though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt-offering, thou must offer it, unto the Lord. For Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the Lord. And Manoah said unto the angel of the Lord, what is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour? and the angel of the Lord said unto him, why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is a secret? so Manoah took a kid, with a meat-offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the Lord. And the angel did wonderously, and Manoah his wife looked on. For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground. But the angel of the Lord did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the Lord. And Manoah said unto his wife, we shall surely die, because we have seen God. But his wife said unto him, if the Lord were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burntoffering and a meat-offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would, as at this time, have told us such things as these. And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson. And the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. And
