Thomas, d. vit. pat.; 3. Sir EDWARD; 4. William, archbishop of Canterbury; 5. John; 6. Sir Philip, ancestor to the present earl; 7. Sir PETER, K.G., d. 1404, s.p.; 8. Humphrey, and nine das."

Sir EDWARD, 3d son of Hugh, 2d earl of Devon, d. before his father, leaving two sons, EDWARD, who succeeded his grandfather as 3d earl of Devon in 1377, and sir HUGH COURTENAY, of Haccomb. EDWARD, 3d earl, d. 1419, and was succeeded by his son, HUGH, 4th earl, who was father of THOMAS, 5th earl, to whom succeeded his son, THOMAS, 6th earl, who was attainted and beheaded 1 Edw. IV. for his loyalty to the house of Lancaster; he d. s.p., and was succeeded by his brother, HENRY, 7th earl, to whom succeeded JOHN, 8th earl, who being slain at the battle of Tewkesbury, 1471, s.p., the elder branch became extinct in the male line.

On the accession of Henry VII., sir EDWARD COURTENAY, of Boconnoc, being then heir male of the family, (viz. son of sir HUGH COURTENAY, of Boconnoc, co. Cornwall, son and heir of sir HUGH of Haccomb, co. Devon, the brother of EDWARD, 3d earl,) was created earl of Devon, to him and the heirs male of his body, by patent 26 Oct. 1485. He was succeeded by his son HENRY, who was created marquess of Exeter, June 1525, but having been attainted and beheaded in 31 Hen. VIII. all his honours were forfeited. His only child, sir EDWARD COURTENAY, continued a prisoner until the accession of queen Mary, who, in the first year of her reign, restored him to the title and precedence of his ancestors, with remainder to his heirs male for ever. To his great-grandson, William Courtenay, (who was b. 1628,) a writ of privy seal was issued for creating him a baronet, which title he and his descendants ever after used and were called by; but no record of any letters patent for that dignity has hitherto been discovered.
