scales, and the hills in a balance? Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or, being his counsellor, hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding? Isa. xl. 12, 13, 14.

3 God said, &c.] By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap; he layeth up the depth in storehouses. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. Ps. xxxiii. 6. 9. He commanded, and they were created. Ps. cxlviii. 5. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, (the leper), saying, I will, Be thou clean. Matt. viii. 3. And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. John xi. 43.

(what he had created) was good. Gen. i. 10. 12. 18. 25. 31. Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly as far as light excelleth darkness. Eccles. ii. 13. Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun. Eccles. xi. 7.

5 Day, &c.] Day and night shall not cease. Gen. viii. 22. Day unto day uttereth speech. Ps. xix. 2. The day is thine, the night also is thine. Ps. lxxiv. 16. Thou (Lord) makest darkness, and it is night. Ps. civ. 20. I form the light, and create darkness. Isa. xlv. 7. Thus saith the Lord, If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant. Jer. xxxiii. 20, 21. Every man's work shall be made manifest, for the day shall declare it. 1 Cor. iii. 13. But all things that are reproved, are made manifest by the light; for whatsoever doth make manifest, is light. Ephes. v. 13. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day. We are not of the night, nor of darkness. 1 Thess. v. 5.

6 Let there be a firmament.] And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven. Gen. i. xiv. In the six hundreth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up; and the windows of heaven were opened, and the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. Gen. vii. 11, 12. He (the Lord) bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not rent under them. By his Spirit he hath garnished the heavens. Job xxvi. 8. 13. Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud. Hast thou, with him, spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten lookingglass? Job xxxvii. 11. 18. Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow; or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail? Who hath divided a water-course for the overflowing of waters; to cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is? Job xxxviii. 22. 25, 26. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth his handy work. Ps. xix. 1.

Let there be light.] Behold, he spreadeth his light upon "it" ("his tabernacle"). Job xxxvi. 30. Where is the way where light dwelleth? Job xxxviii. 19. Light is sown for the righteous. Ps. xcvii. 11. (O Lord, my God, thou art very great,) who coverest thyself with light, as with a garment. Ps. civ. 2. God is the Lord, which hath shewed us light. Ps. cxviii. 27. I form the light. Isa. xlv. 7. The sun shall be no more thy light by day, neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee (the church); but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. Isa. lx. 19. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehendeth it not. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. John i. 5. 9. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world; and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. John iii. 19. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God, in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Cor. iv. 6. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord. Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. Ephes. v. 8.14. In his times he (Christ) shall shew who is the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto. 1 Tim. vi. 16. God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1 John i. 5. 7 Divided the waters, &c.] When he (the Lord) established the clouds above; when he strengthened the fountains of the deep; when he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment; when he appointed the foundations of the earth; then was I (wisdom) by him. Prov. viii. 28, 29. He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not rent under them. Job xxvi. 8. He sendeth the springs into the valleys which run among the hills. Ps. civ. 10. 9 Let the waters, &c.] He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. He hath compassed the waters with bounds. Job xxvi. 7. 10. 11 Let the earth bring forth, &c.] And (the Lord made) every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew. Gen. ii. 5. As for the earth, out of it cometh bread. Job xxviii. 5. He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man, that he may bring forth food out of the earth; and wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart. The trees of the Lord are full of sap; where the birds make their nests. Ps. civ. 14-17. Who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains? Ps. cxlvii. 8. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Matt. vi. 30. For the earth which bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God. Heb. vi. 7.

Fruit after his kind, &c.] I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed. Gen. i. 29. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. Gen. ii. 9. 16.

And he (that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly) shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season. Ps. i. 3. For he (that trusteth in the Lord) shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. Jer. xvii. 88. Every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matt. iii. 10. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Matt. vii. 16. For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself. Mark iv. 28. For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit, neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Luke vi. 43. For every tree is known by his own fruit. Luke vi. 44. Can the fig-tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? James iii. 12.

12 The earth brought forth.] For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to

spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. Isa. Ixi. 11. The earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. Mark iv. 28.

The herb, &c.] For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please; it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isa. Iv. 10, 11. The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. Matt. xiii. 24, 25, 26. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. Luke vi. 44. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower, both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness. 2 Cor. ix. 10. Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Gal. vi. 7.

14 Let there be lights, &c.] therefore good heed), lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. Deut. iv. 19. Upon whom doth not his light arise? How, then, can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. Job xxv. 3. 5. Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place, that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? It is turned as clay to the seal: and they stand as a garment. Job xxxviii. 12, 13, 14. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained: what is man, that thou art mindful of him, and the son of man, that

The day is thine, the night also is thine; thou hast prepared the light and the sun: thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter. Ps. lxxiv. 16, 17. He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. Thou makest darkness, and it is night. Ps. civ. 19, 20. Thy faithfulness is unto all generations. They continue this day according to thine ordinances. Ps. cxix. 90, 91. (O give thanks unto the Lord:) to him that made great lights: the sun to rule by day; the moon and stars to rule by night, for his mercy endureth for ever. Ps. cxxxvi. 7, 8, 9. Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him all ye stars of light. He hath also established them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass. Ps. cxlviii. 3. 6. Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names, by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth. Isa. xl. 26. Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night. Jer, xxxi. 35. Thus saith the Lord, if ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant. Jer. xxxiii. 20. 26.

And let them be for signs, &c.] While the earth remaineth, seed-time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night, shall not cease. Gen. viii. 22. I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. Gen. ix. 13. Let the stars of the twilight thereof (of the day in which Job was born) be dark: let it look for light, but have none: neither let it see the dawning of the day. Job iii. 9. Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? Canst thou bring forth Mazaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons? Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? Job xxxviii. 31, 32, 33.

up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast-day. Ps. lxxxi. 3. And when I shall put thee (Egypt) out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark: I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light. All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord God. Ezek. xxxii. 7, 8. The gate of the inner court, that looketh toward the east, shall be shut the six working days; but on the sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of the new moon it shall be opened. Ezek. xlvi. 1. The earth shall quake before "them" ("the locusts") the heavens shall tremble. The sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. Joel ii. 10. And I will shew wonders in the heavens, and in the earth: blood and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come. Joel ii. 30, 31. The sun and the moon shall be darkened, (in the day of the Lord) and the stars shall withdraw their shining. Joel iii. 15. Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night. Amos v. 8. I will cause the sun to go down at noon, (in the day of Israel's end), and I will darken the earth in the clear day. Amos viii. 9. We have seen his (the Messiah's) star in the east (said the wise men) and are come to worship him. Matt. ii. 2. When it is evening, ye say, it will be fair weather, for the sky is red; and in the morning, it will be foul weather to-day, for the sky is red and lowring. Matt. xvi. 2, 3. Immediately after the tribulation of those days (at Christ's coming) shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light: and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken. Matt. xxiv. 29. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. Mark xiii. 24, 25. And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars, and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Luke xxi. 25, 26. And the sun was darkened (when Christ gave up the ghost), and the vail of the temple was rent in the midst. Luke xxiii. 45. And I will show wonders in heaven above,

Rev. vi. 12. And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. Rev. viii. 12. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. Rev. ix. 2.

16 To rule the day, &c.] (Take ye therefore good heed,) lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. Deut. iv. 19. Then spake Joshua to the Lord, in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel: Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon, and thou moon in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed: And there was no day like that before it, or after it. Josh. x. 12, 13, 14. If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; and my heart hath been secretly enticed, &c. This also were an iniquity. Job xxxi. 26, 27. When the morning stars sang together, (who laid the corner-stone of the earth?) Job xxxviii. 7. Then (in the punishment of the kings of the earth) the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in Mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients glori ously. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differeth from another star in glory. 1 Cor. xv. 41. And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory. Rev. xvi. 8, 9. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. Rev. xxi. 23.

17 Set them, &c.] I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. Gen. ix. 13. Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days, and caused the day-spring to know his place? Job xxxviii. 12. O Lord, our God, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Ps. viii. 1. The Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. Acts xiii. 47.

20 Let the waters, &c.] And God blessed them, (the creatures which he had made) saying, be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas; and let fowl multiply in the earth. Gen. i. 22. And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field,
