almost always have an immense advantage over the foreigner, in respect to the ease with which he can wield the language of the country. My health, as well as that of my companion, has been pretty good since we arrived in India; and we suffer less from the heat of the climate than we expected. We begin to talk the language a little, and to read it with considerable facility. But I am convinced that we' shall not for a long time, if ever, be able to speak it as the natives do.
