to the grave. Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant (Judah) abide instead of the lad, a bondman to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brethren; for how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? Now (after the death of Joshua) it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hand. Ju. i. 1, 2. And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up first. Ju. xx. 18. Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king (David); and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men. 2 Sa. xxiv. 9. See 1 Ki. iv. and 1 Chr. xii. In every several city he (Rehoboam) put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side. Divers of Asher, and Manasseh, and of Zebulun, humbled themselves, and came to Jerusalem, 2 Chr. xxx. 11. Thou hast also given me (said David) the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me. They cried, but there was none to save them; even unto the Lord, but he answered them not. Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind; I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets. Ps. xviii. 40, 41, 42. But (the Lord) chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved. And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever. He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds from following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. Ps. lxxviii. 68-71. Of the increase of his (Christ's) government and peace there shall be no end; upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth even for ever: the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. Is. ix. 7. Rev. v. 5. And the seventh angel sounded, and there were great voices in heaven saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shail reign for ever and ever. Rev. xi. 15.

The neck of thine enemies.] It came to pass, when they brought out those (five) kings (from the cave of Makkedah) unto Joshua,

thee. Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art 9 gone up he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from 10 Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come;

that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them. Jos. x. 24. Thou hast also given me (said David) the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me. 2 Sa. xxii. 41. Thus saith the Lord, concerning the Ammonites, The sword, the sword is drawn; whiles they see vanity unto thee; whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end. Ez. xxi. 29.

Thy father's children, &c.] Let people serve thee (said Isaac in blessing Jacob), and nations bow down to thee; be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee, &c. Ge. xxvii. 29. Behold (said Joseph, in his dream), we were binding sheaves in the field; and lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright: and behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. And his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I, and thy mother, and thy brethren, indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? Ge. xxxvii. 7. 10. Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth. Ge. xlii. 6. So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord; and they anointed David king over Israel. 2 Sa. v. 3.

9 A lion's whelp.] They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God, for the spirit of whoredom is in the midst of them; and they have not known the Lord. I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will tear and go away, and none shall rescue him. Ho. v. 4. 14. Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule, and all authority and power. 1 Co. xv. 24. Christ glorified not himself, to be made an high priest, but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to-day have I begot ten thee. He. v. 5.

He stooped down.] Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion (said Balaam to Balak), and lift up himself as a young lion. He shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain. Nu. xxiii. 24. He (Jacob) couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion; who shall stir him up? Nu. xxiv. 9.

10 The sceptre, &c.] I shall see ("the star of Jacob"), but not now (said Balaam to Balak); I shall behold him, but not nigh. There shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. Nu. xxiv. 17. Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver. Ps. lx. 7. Their nobles shall be of themselves" ("the Jews"), and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? saith the Lord. Je. xxx. 21. Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints. Hos. xi. 12. And "she" ("Jerusalem," under the parable of a wasted vine) had strong rods for the sceptres of them that bare rule, and her stature was exalted among the thick branches; and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches. And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, which hath devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong rod to be a sceptre to rule. This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation. Ez. xix. 11. 14. And he (Judah) shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up. And the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away. Zec. x. 11.

Lawgiver.] The princes digged the well (sang Israel in their song, after sundry journeys), the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. Nu. xxi. 18. Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver. Ps. lx. 7. See Ps. cviii. 8. The Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver; the Lord is our king: he will save us. Is. xxxiii. 22.

Between his feet.] The tender and delicate woman among you (in the divers plagues for disobedience), her eyes shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter, and toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly, in the siege and straitness wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates. De. xxviii. 56, 57.

11 His foal unto the vine.] Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? Is. lxiii. 1, 2, 3.

He washed his garments in wine.] Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and making merry. And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine, and under his fig-tree, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon. 1 Ki. iv. 20. 25. Come out to me (saith the king of Assyria), and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig-tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern: until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil-olive and of honey, that ye may live and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah when he persuadeth you, saying, The Lord will deliver us. 2 Ki. xviii. 31, 32.
