His lordship is descended from the same ancestry with the barons Napier in Scotland. (See that title.) JAMES NAPIER, a younger son of that house, came into Engfand temp. Henry VII., m. Catharine, da. and h. of sir James Twinihoe, knt., and settled in Dorsetshire. He was great-greatgrandfather of sir NATHANIEL NAPER, of More Critchell, co. Dorset, who had, besides other issue, 3 sons, sir Gerard, created a bart. 25 June 1641; Robert, father of sir Robert, created a bart. 25 Feb. 1681; and JAMES, who m. a sister of the celebrated sir William Petty, settled at Loughcrew, co. Meath, and was ancestor of the present lord.

JAMES NAPER, of Loughcrew, grandfather of JAMES, 1st lord Sherborne, m. Anne, da. of sir Ralph Dutton, of Sherborne, co. Dorset, bart., (so created 1678,) and sister and co-h. of sir John Dutton, bart., who d. without issue, 1743, when the title became extinct; and d. 1716, leaving issue by her, (who d. 1718,)

His lordship is uncle to the duke of Buccleuch, and succeeded to this barony 28 May 1790, on the death of his grandfather, GEORGE, duke of Montagu, agreeably to the limitation of the patent granted to his grace 21 Aug. 1786, with remainder to his grandson, lord HENRY-JAMES MONTAGUSCOTT, 2d son of HENRY, duke of Buccleuch, and his issue male, remainder to every other son or sons successively of Henry and Elizabeth, duke and duchess of Buccleuch, thereafter to be born, and their issue male.

JOHN MORDEN, of Suffield, co. Norfolk, esq., m. Judith, eldest da. of William Cropley, esq., (by Catherine, da. of sir Charles Harbord, knt., surveyor-general to king Charles I.,) and sister and co-h. of HarbordCropley Harbord, of Gunton, co. Norfolk, esq., and had, besides other issue, a son and heir,

WILLIAM MORDEN, who inherited the estates of his maternal uncle, and in pursuance of his wish assumed the name and arms of HARBORD, by act of parliament, 1742. He was member in three parliaments for Beeralston, co. Devon, elected a K.B. May 1744, and, 22 March 1745-6, created a bart. He m. Elizabeth, da. and co-h. of Robert Britiffe, of Bacon's Thorpe, co. Norfolk, esq., and d. 17 Feb. 1770, leaving issue by her (who d. 8 Aug. 1777) two sons, 1. HARBORD, 1st lord.

GUY CARLETON, LORD DORCHESTER, Baron of Dorchester, co. Oxford, a Captain in the 7th Hussars; born 25 Oct. 1811; succeeded his cousin, Arthur- Henry, late lord, 3 June 1826.

His lordship's immediate ancestor was LAUNCELOT CARLETON, a younger son of the ancient house of Carleton, of Carleton, co. Cumberland, and settled at Rossfeid, near Enniskillen, co. Fermanagh, in Ireland. He was the father of six sons, LAUNCELOT, the eldest, of Rossfeid, lost his life in supporting the cause of the house of Stewart, and was the great-grandfather of

GUY, 1st ford Dorchester, so created 21 Aug. 1786, K.B., gen. in the army, col. 4th regiment of dragoons, and governor of Fort Charlemont, in Ireland; b. 3 Sept. 1724, m., 21 May 1772, Maria Howard, da. of Thomas, 2d earl of Effingham, by whom (who d. 14 March 1836, æt. 82) he had issue,
