3 But, ere that trumpet shakes
The mansions of the dead,
Hark, from the gospel's cheering voice
What joyful tidings spread!
4 Poor sinners seek His face,
Whose wrath they cannot bear,
Fly to the shelter of His cross,
And find salvation there.

[blocks in formation]

1 YE that die without repentance,
Ye must rise when Christ appears,
Rise to hear your dreadful sentence,
While the saints rejoice in theirs :
You to dwell with fiends infernal,
They with Jesus Christ to reign;
They go into life eternal,

346

You to everlasting pain.

OPENING SCHOOL.

Prayer for the School.

1 SHINE on our Sabbath school,
Thou God of mercy, shine!
The eyes that look to Thee are ours;
The hand that gives is Thine.
2 Our teachers sow the seed;
Do Thou their labours own;
The final increase must proceed
From Thee, and Thee alone.
3 Thy Word is in our hand;
O may Thy grace impart

8.7.

S. M.

To each a mind to understand,
And a believing heart!

347

4 Thus may Thy Spirit bless;
Nor let Thy favour cease;
For wisdom's ways are pleasantness,
And all Thy paths are peace.

The Lord's Day.

1 ONCE more we keep the sacred day
That saw the Saviour rise;

Once more we tune our youthful song
To Him that rules the skies.

C.M.

2 What numbers vainly spend these hours
That are to Jesus due!

Children and parents, how they live,
And how they perish too!

3 O may the God who gave our lives,
And thus far led us on,

Be pleased to train our infant minds
To know and love His Son !

4 Teach us Thy way, while here we learn
To read Thy heavenly Word;
Bless all the kind instruction given,
And make us Thine, O Lord.

348

Blessings Implored.

L. M.

1 ASSEMBLED in our school once more, O Lord, Thy blessing we implore; We meet to read, and sing, and pray, Be with us, then, through this Thy day. 2 Our teachers, Lord, be pleased to bless, And crown our studies with success;

In our young hearts Thy truth instil, That we may know and do Thy will. 3 May fervent prayer to Thee ascend For parent, teacher, foe, and friend; And when we in Thy house appear, Help us to worship in Thy fear.

4 When we on earth shall meet no more, May we above to glory soar;

349

And praise Thee in more lofty strains,
Where one eternal Sabbath reigns.

Prayer for Blessing.

1 Now may the Lord assist us all
To sing the Saviour's praise;
To join our teachers while they pray,-
Lord, bless the Sabbath days.
2 They seek the Spirit's promised aid
To make the Scriptures plain;
While in our ears they oft resound,
'Ye must be born again.'

3 Hasten the time, Almighty God,
When truth shall set us free;

C.M.

And those that teach us now shall say,
Behold, these bow the knee !

4 Then shall we pray in humble faith,
Lord, crown their work of love;
And grant that they and we at last
May meet in heaven above.

5 There shall we meet a numerous host
Of sinners saved by grace,

All washed in blood, and clad in white,
Prepared for that bright place.

The First Day.

"TWAS on this day that God came down,
And said, 'Let there be light!'
The light at His commandment shone,
And drove away the night.

2 'Twas on this day that Jesus rose
Triumphant from the grave;
His arm had conquered all His foes,
And now He lives to save.

3 'Twas on this day the Holy Ghost
Upon the church was poured,
And the disciples saw fulfilled
The promise of their Lord.

4 And on this day we read His Word :
O may a heav'nly ray,

Shed by the Spirit of the Lord,
Show us the Living Way!

351

Christ's Eye is on us.

C. M.

P.M.

I IF Jesus should come to our meeting to-day, To call out the Christians by name,

Ohow we should listen to what He would say! How solemn the moments would seem! 2 He'd know who they were, for He searches the heart;

We could not the Saviour deceive;

O who are the ones that He'd call out apart? And who are the ones He would leave? 3 Yet Jesus is here, though His form is unseen; His eye is on each of us now;

He knows who has truly sought pardon for sin And longs like the Saviour to grow.

4 His angels are coming like reapers some day,
To sever the tares from the wheat,
And carry God's children in safety away,
Their loving Redeemer to meet.

352

CLOSING SCHOOL.

Grateful Petitions.

C.M.

1 HEAR, Lord, the song of praise and prayer, In heaven, Thy dwelling-place,

Of children taught with tender care
The words of truth and grace.

2 Thanks for Thy Word and for Thy day;
And grant us, we implore,

Never to waste in sinful play

Thy holy Sabbaths more.

3 Thanks that we hear; but O impart
To each desires sincere,

That we may listen with the heart,
And learn as well as hear!

4 Do Thou, O Lord, our spirits take
Under Thy gracious sway,
Who canst the wisest wiser make,
And babes as wise as they.

353

Closing School.

1 ON what has now been sown,
Thy blessing, Lord, bestow ;
The power is Thine alone,

To make it spring and grow;

148th.

Do Thou the gracious harvest raise,
And Thou alone shalt have the praise.
