The beasts with food His hands supply, And the young ravens when they cry. 5 But saints are lovely in His sight; He views His children with delight: He sees their hope, He knows their fear; And looks and loves His image there. God's Good Gifts.

242

1 LORD, I would own Thy tender care,
For all Thy gifts are free;
The food I eat, the clothes I wear,
Are all bestowed by Thee.
2 'Tis Thou preservest me from death
And dangers every hour;

I cannot draw another breath
Unless Thou give me power.

C.M.

3 My health, and friends, and parents dear, To me by God are given;

I have not any blessing here

But what is sent from heaven. 4 Such goodness, Lord, and constant care, A child can ne'er repay;

But may it be my daily prayer
To love Thee and obey!

243

Providential Favour.

1 I THANK the goodness and the grace
Which on my birth have smiled,
And made me, in these later days,
A favoured English child.

2 I was not born, as thousands are,
Where God was never known;

C.M.

And taught to pray a useless prayer
To blocks of wood and stone.

3 I was not born a little slave,
To labour in the sun,

And wish I were but in my grave,
And all my labour done.

4 I was not born without a home,
Or in some broken shed,

Like some poor children taught to roam
And beg my daily bread.

5 O God, I thank Thee, who hast planned A better lot for me,

And placed me in this happy land,
Where I may hear of Thee.

244 Jesus Worthy of Praise. 8.7 double
I LORD of every land and nation,
Ancient of eternal days,
Sounded through Thy wide dominion,
Be Thy just and worthy praise;
For Thy providence that governs
Through Thy empire's wide domain,
Wings an angel, guides a sparrow,
Blessed be Thy gentle reign.
2 Lord of angels, Friend of sinners,
May we gratefully adore;

O may we become obtainers

Of Thy light and love and power! Help us to improve each favour

Which Thy goodness has bestowed; Be our Prophet, Prince, and Saviour, Wash us in Thy precious blood.

245

God's Temporal Favours.

C.M.

1 WHENE'ER I take my walks abroad,
How many poor I see!

What shall I render to the Lord
For all His gifts to me?

2 Not more than others I deserve,
Yet God has given me more;
For I have food, while others starve,
And beg from door to door.

3 How many children in the street
Half naked I behold,

While I am clothed from head to feet,
And covered from the cold!

4 While some poor children scarce can tell Where they may lay their head,,

I have a house wherein to dwell,
And rest upon my bed.

5 While others early learn to swear,
And curse, and lie, and steal,
May I be taught His Name to fear,
And live His love to feel.

246

Songs of Praise.

1 SONGS of praise the angels sang,
Heaven with hallelujahs rang,
When Jehovah's work begun,
When He spake and it was done.
2 Songs of praise awoke the morn
When the Prince of Peace was born;
Songs of praise arose when He
Captive led captivity.

7's.

3 Heaven and earth must pass away; Songs of praise shall crown that day: God will make new heavens and earth; Songs of praise shall hail their birth. 4 Saints below, with heart and voice, Still in songs of praise rejoice; Learning here, by faith and love, Songs of praise to sing above. 5 Borne upon their latest breath, Songs of praise shall conquer death; Then, amidst eternal joy,

247

Songs of praise their powers employ.

United Praise.

1 COME let us join our cheerful songs With angels round the throne;

C.M.

Ten thousand thousand are their tongues, But all their joys are one.

2 Jesus is worthy to receive

Honour and power divine;

And blessings more than we can give
Be, Lord, for ever Thine.
3 Let all that dwell below the sky,
And air, and earth, and seas,
Conspire to lift Thy glories high,
And speak Thy endless praise.
4 The whole creation join in one
To bless the sacred Name

Of Him that sits upon the throne,
And to adore the Lamb.

248

Praise to the Creator.

1 FROM all that dwell below the skies,
Let the Creator's praise arise;
Let the Redeemer's name be sung
Through every land, by every tongue.
2 Eternal are Thy mercies, Lord;
Eternal truth attends Thy word;

L.M.

Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore, Till suns shall rise and set no more.

249

Hourly Mercies.

1 OUR youthful voices, Lord, we raise
Before Thy gracious throne;

O tune our hearts to sing Thy praise
For all Thy mercies shown!

C.M.

2 Thy watchful eye, Thy guardian hand,
Support us every hour;

And in Thy house this day we stand,
Thy goodness to adore.

3 Incline our hearts to seek Thy face,
The Saviour's name to love;
And form us, by almighty grace,
For nobler praise above.

250 Guardian of Youth. 8.8.8.8.8.8.
1 GREAT God, our infant voices raise,
And tune our lips and hearts with praise,
Thy goodness to adore;

Our life, our health, our every friend,
From Thee arose, on Thee depend,
Kind Father of the poor.
