And call our youthful souls to sing
Sublimer praises near Thy throne.

The Good Shepherd.

1 JESUS, the gentle Shepherd, stands, And calls His sheep by name;

C. M.

He leads them with His mighty hands,
And feeds each tender lamb.
2 He loved them in the ages past,
And died that they might be
His portion while the ages last-
To all eternity.

3 He seeks them when they go astray,
And from the Shepherd roam;
And goes o'er many a rugged way,
To fetch His wanderers home.
4 He leads the lambs, with love untold,
To feed in pastures fair;
The feeblest lamb in all the fold
Receives the Shepherd's care.

5 Dear Jesus, may I hear Thy voice,
And learn to follow Thee!

149

O may Thy ways be all my choice,
To prove Thy choice of me!

Aaron and Christ.

1 JESUS, in Thee Thy saints behold

A thousand glories more

Than the rich gems and polished gold
The sons of Aaron wore.

C. M.

2 They first their own burnt-offering brought,
To purge themselves from sin;
Thy life was pure without a spot,
And all Thy nature clean.
3 Once in the circuit of a year,
With blood, but not his own,
Aaron within the veil appears,
Before the golden throne.

4 But Christ with His own pow'rful blood
Ascends above the skies,
And in the presence of the Lord
Shows His own sacrifice.

The Glory of Christ.

1 FAR above yon glorious ceiling
Of the azure vaulted sky,
Jesus sits, His grace revealing
To the splendid troops on high.
2 Hosts seraphic, humbly bowing,
At His footstool prostrate fall;
Saints and angels all avowing
God in Christ their All in all.

151

Christ All in all.

1 CHRIST is the true substantial good,
The spring of heav'nly grace,
The hungry sinner's daily food,

The Prince of life and peace.

2 Christ is the sure Foundation-stone, The Prophet, Priest, and King;

8.7.

C.M.

And sinners, saved by grace alone,
His grace and mercy sing.

5 Christ is the sinner's only Way,
And He the Truth and Life;
The Sun that makes His people's day,
The Peace that ends their strife.
4 Christ is the everlasting Lord,

152

Their strength whene'er they fall;
The sum and substance of the Word,
The sinner's All in all.

L.M.

Altogether Lovely. 1 THE whole creation can afford But some faint shadows of the Lord; Nature, to make His beauties known, Must mingle colours not her own. 2 Is He a sun? His beams are grace; His course is joy and righteousness; Nations rejoice when He appears, To chase their clouds, and dry their tears. 3 Is He a way? He leads to God; The path is drawn in lines of blood; Here the redeemed, with hope and zeal, Walk upwards to fair Zion's hill. 4 Is He a rock? How firm He proves! The Rock of Ages never moves;

Yet the sweet streams that from Him flow Refresh them all the desert through. 5 Nor earth, nor sea, nor sun, nor stars, Nor heaven, His full resemblance wears;

153

His beauties never can be known
Till He's beheld upon His throne.

The Foundation Stone.

L.M.

1 LET monarchs fall, as soon they must; Let thrones and sceptres lick the dust; There is a precious Corner-Stone

For living souls to build upon.

2 Though men, in all their swelling pride, This Stone reject, this hope deride, His word Jehovah does perform,

And saves them in each rising storm. 3 Here fainting souls, with dangers pressed, Fix their expiring hopes, and rest; Though kingdoms crumble to decay, This Corner-Stone is still their stay.

154

The Sinner's Friend.

1 THERE is a Man of matchless grace,
Whose love shall never end;

He came to die for rebels base;
He is the Sinner's Friend.

2 He left His glorious home above,
And did to grief descend,

C. M.

That He might show His mighty love,
And be the Sinner's Friend.

3 His deep compassions here below
Did o'er the sorrowing bend;
His sympathy with human woe
Proved Him the Sinner's Friend.

4 But O! what depths of guilt and shameWhile sin and sinner blend

To smite the holy, harmless Lamb,
And bruise the Sinner's Friend!
5 But Jesus triumphed o'er the grave,
And did to heaven ascend;

Where now He shows His power to save,
And lives-the Sinner's Friend.

6 When sinners seek His face, though grief And sin their spirits rend,

Jesus can give them sweet relief,

For He's the Sinner's Friend. 7 And all who taste His endless love, And on His grace depend,

155

For ever in His heaven above

Shall praise the Sinner's Friend.

An Almighty Friend.

1 HE who on earth as man was known,
And bore both sins and pains,
Now, seated on th' eternal throne,
The God of glory reigns.

2 His hands the wheels of nature guide
With an unerring skill;

And countless worlds, extended wide,
Obey His sovereign will.

C.M.

3 While harps unnumbered sound His praise In yonder world above,

His saints on earth admire His ways,
And glory in His love.
