4 blessed. So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years 5 old when he departed out of Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran: and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan, and into the land 6 of Canaan they came. And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite

for "thy" ("Jacob's") sake. And the Lord hath blessed thee (Laban) since my coming. Gen. xxx. 27. 30. The Lord blessed the Egyptian's (Potiphar's) house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had, in the house and in the field. Gen. xxxix. 5. Men shall be blessed in "him" ("Solomon," as a type of Christ). Ps. lxxii. 17. Ye are the children of the Prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, and in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you first, God having raised up his son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. Acts iii. 25, 26. He (Abraham) received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith, which he had yet being uncircumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them (that believe) also. Rom. iv. 11. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption. 1 Cor. i. 30. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen, through faith, preached before the gospel to Abraham, saying, in thee shall all nations be blessed. Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made: he saith not to seeds, as of many, but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female, for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Gal. iii. 8. 16. 28. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places, in Christ. Eph. i. 3. Put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge, after the image of him who created him. Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free, but Christ is all, and in all. Col. iii. 10, 11. After this I beheld (said John), and lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.

When he departed, &c.] By faith Abraham went out, not knowing whither he went. Heb. xi. 8.

5 The souls, &c.] And Abram armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan. And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. Gen. xiv. 14. 21. And the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the waggons, which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. And all the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, al the souls were threescore and six. Gen. xlvi. 5. 26.

6 Passed through the land, &c.] By faith he (Abraham) sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles, with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise. Heb. xi. 9.

Sichem, &c.] And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan. Gen. xxxiii. 18. And when Shechem the son of Hamor, the Hivite, prince of the country, saw "her" (“Dinah") he took her, &c. Gen. xxxiv. 2. And Jacob hid them (the strange gods of Beth-el) under the oak which was by Shechem. Gen. xxxv. 4. And they appointed (as a city of refuge) Shechem in Mount Ephraim. Josh. xx. 7. And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for an hundred pieces of silver, and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph. Josh. xxiv. 32. And Abimelech, the son of Jerubbaal, went to Shechem unto his mother's brethren (conspiring with the Shechemites to murder his brethren). Judges ix. 1. And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king. 1 Kings xii. 1. Then cometh he (Jesus) to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. John iv. 5. And (Jacob and our fathers) were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor, the father of Sychem. Acts vii. 16.

Plain of Moreh.] Are they not on the other side Jordan, in the land of the Canaanites, which dwell in the champaign over against Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh (speaking of Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal). Deut. xi.

was then in the land. And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and 7 said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him. And he removed 8 from thence unto a mountain on the east of Beth-el, and pitched his tent, having Beth-el on the west, and Hai on the east: and

The Canaanite, &c.] And Canaan begat Sidon, his first born, and Heth; and the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza. Gen. x. 15. 19. And the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelt then in the land (when the strife arose between the herdmen of Abraham and the herdmen of Lot). Gen. xiii. 7. Unto thy seed have I given this land from the river of Egypt unto the great river (Euphrates); and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Gergashites, and the Jebusites. Gen. xv. 18. 21.

7 The Lord appeared, &c.] And when Abraham was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to him. Gen. xvii. 1. And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre. Gen. xviii. 1. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. Gen. xxxii. 30.

Unto thy seed, &c.] For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. Gen. xiii. 15. And Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying, I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God. Gen. xvii. 3. 8. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries. Gen. xxvi. 3. And, behold, the Lord stood above "it" ("the ladder" of Jacob's vision) and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham, thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed. Gen. xxviii, 13. And the Lord said unto Moses, depart, and go up hence, thou, and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, unto thy seed will I give it. Exod. xxxiii. 1. Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me. Numb. xxxii. 11. Behold I have set the land before you: go in, and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them. Deut. i. 8. And it shall be, when the Lord

thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities which thou buildedst not, &c. beware lest thou forget God. Deut. vi. 10. Choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live, that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to give them. Deut. xxx. 20. Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; when they were but a few men in number, yea, very few, and strangers in "it" ("the land"). Ps. cv. 9. 12. The children of the promise are counted for the seed. Rom. ix. 8. To Abraham and his seed were the promises made. Gal. iii. 16.

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. Gal. iv. 28.

Builded an altar.] See verse 8. Noah builded an altar unto the Lord. Gen. viii. 20. And he (Abram) went on his journey, unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first; then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the Lord. Gen. xiii. 3, 4. 18. And he (Isaac) builded an altar there (at Beer-sheba), and called upon the name of the Lord. Gen. xxvi. 25. And he (Jacob) erected there an altar (at Shalem, a city of Shechem), and called it El-elohe- Israel. Gen. xxxiii. 20. These (excellent persons of old time) all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. Heb. xi. 13.

8 Beth-el.] And he called the name of that place Beth-el (where he had set up the stone for a pillar). Gen. xxviii. 19. Let us arise (said Jacob) and go up to Bethel; and Jacob called the name of the place where the Lord spake with him Bethel; and they journeyed from Bethel. Gen. xxxv. 3. 15, 16. And there was not a

man left in Ai or Bethel that went not out after Israel. Joshua viii. 17. Of the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin were Beth-arabah, and Zemaraim, and Bethel. Josh. xviii. 21, 22. The children also of Benjamin "from Geba" (or "of Geba") dwelt at Michmash, and Aija, and Bethel. Nehem. xi. 31.

Hai on the east, &c.] And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of Bethel, &c. Josh. vii. 2. So Joshua arose and all the people of war to go up against Ai. Josh. viii. 3. See Nehem. xi. 31. preced. com. He (the Assyrian) is come to Aith, &c. Isa. x. 28.

Called upon the name, &c,] "Then" ("at the birth of Enos") began men to call upon the name of the Lord. Gen. iv. 26. And "there" ("at Bethel") Abram called on the name of the Lord. Gen. xiii. 4. And Abraham planted a grove at Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the Lord. Gen. xxi. 33. Then (in my trouble and sorrow) called I upon the name of the Lord (said David). Ps. cxvi. 4. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be delivered; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call. Joel ii. 32. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts ii. 21. The same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him how then shall they call upon him, in whom they have not believed? Rom. x. 12. 14. Paul, unto them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours. 1 Cor. i. 2.

9 Going on still, &c.] And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel. Gen. xiii. 3. And Isaac came from the way of the well, Lahai-roi. Gen. xxiv. 62. When they (Israel) went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people, he suffered no man to do them wrong. Ps. cv. 13, 14. These all (the excellent persons of old time) died in the faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth; for they that say such things, declare plainly that they seek a country. Heb. xi. 13, 14.

10 A famine, &c.] And there was a famine in the land, besides the first famine which was in the days of Abraham. Gen. xxvi. 1. And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan. Gen. xlii. 5. And the famine

Now

was sore in the land. Gen. xliii. 1. And there was no bread in all the land, for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt, and all the land of Canaan, fainted by reason of the famine. Gen. xlvii. 13. it came to pass in the days that the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. Ruth i. 1. Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year. 2 Sam. xxi. 1. As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand (said Elijah), there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word: and the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, get thee

hence; I have commanded the ravens to feed thee: and the ravens brought him bread and flesh, and he drank of the "brook” (“ Cherith"). After a while the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land; and the word of the Lord came unto him (Elijah), saying, get thee to Zarephath; behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee; the barrel of meal (of the widow) shall not waste, nor the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord "sendeth" (or "giveth") rain upon the earth; and the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah. 1 Kings xvii. throughout. And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab, and there was a sore famine in Samaria. 1 Kings xviii. 2, &c. And Elisha (the prophet) came again to Gilgal, and there was a dearth in the land. 2 Kings iv. 38. And there was a great famine in Samaria, and, behold, they besieged it until an ass's head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver; and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung for five pieces of silver. 2 Kings vi. 25. Thus saith the Lord, to-morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria. 2 Kings vii. I. Then spake Elisha to the woman (the Shungmite), saying, arise, and go thou and thine household and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn, for the Lord hath called for a famine, and it shall also come upon the land seven years. 2 Kings viii. 1. Many are the afflietions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. Ps. xxxiv. 19. A fruitful land (he turneth) into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein. Ps. cvii. 34. The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth. Jer. xiv. 1. In the world "ye" ("the followers of Christ') shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John xvi. 33. there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers found no sustenance. Acts vii. 11. They (Paul and Barnabas) returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and to Antioch, confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Acts xiv. 21, 22.

Now

Went down into Egypt, &c.] And the Lord appeared unto "him" ("Isaac"), and said, go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: sojourn in this land, and I will bless thee. Gen. xxvi. 2, 3. And when they had eaten up the corn which they had

the land. And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter 11 into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: Therefore it shall come 12 to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well 13

brought out of Egypt, their father said unto "them" ("the sons of Israel"), go again, buy us a little food. Gen. xliii. 2. Fear not to go down into Egypt; I will go down with thee into Egypt, and I will also surely bring "thee" ("Israel") up again (said God). Gen. xlvi. 3, 4. Go thou (the Shunammite woman) and thine household, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn; and she went with her household, and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. 2 Kings viii. 1, 2. When they (Israel) went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people, he suffered no man to do them wrong. Ps. cv. 13, 14.

11 A fair woman, &c.] When Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman (Sarai), that she was very fair. Gen. xii. 14. And the men of the place (Gerar) asked him (Isaac) of his wife, and he said, she is my sister, for he feared to say she is my wife, lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah, because she was fair to look upon. Gen. xxvi. 7. Leah was tender-eyed, but Rachel was beautiful and well-favoured. Gen. xxix. 17. Joseph was a goodly person and well-favoured, and it came to pass that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph. Gen. xxxix. 6, 7. And from the roof (of the king's house) he (David) saw a woman washing herself, and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. 2 Sam. xi. 2. There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord. Prov. xxi. 30. My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of Engedi ; behold thou art fair, my love! Can. i. 14, 15.

.12 They will kill me.] And Abraham said, because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they will slay me for my wife's sake. Gen. xx. 11. He (Isaac) said, she is my sister, lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah. Gen. xxvi. 7. And David said in his heart, I shall now "perish" (or "be consumed") one day, by the hand of Saul. 1 Sam. xxvii. 1. The fear of man bringeth a snare, but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be "safe" (or "set on high"). Prov. xxix. 25. Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matt. x. 28. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; if we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 John i. 8. 10.

13 Say, I pray thee, &c.] Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do; he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John viii. 44. Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? God forbid, for then how shall God judge the world? And not rather (as we be slanderously reported) let us do evil that good may come ? Rom. in. 5, 6. 8. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom. vi. 23. For "which things'" sake ("carnal lusts"), the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience. Coloss. iii. 6.

Thou art my sister.] And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah. Gen. xi. 29. And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, she is my sister; and Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent and took Sarah: said he not unto me, she is my sister? (said the king), and she, even she herself, said, he is my brother; in the integrity of my heart, and innocency of my hands, have I done this; and yet she is my sister, she is the daughter of my father (said Abraham), but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife; and it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, this is the kindness which thou shalt shew unto me, at every place whither we shall come, say of me, he is my brother. Gen. xx. 2. 5. 12, 13. And the men of the place (Gerar) asked him (Isaac) of his wife, and he said, she is my sister, for he feared to say she is my wife. Gen. xxvi. 7. And of whom hast thou (the Jewish idolater) been afraid or feared, that thou hast lied and not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? Isa. lvii. 11. Thou (Peter) also wast with Jesus of Galilee, but he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest; then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man, and immediately the cock crew; and Peter remembered the words of Jesus, which said unto him, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Matt. xxvi. 69. 74, 75. For, before that certain came from James, he (Peter) did eat with the Gentiles, but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision; and the other Jews dis

with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee. 14 And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the 15 Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair. The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh : 16 and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and

sembled likewise with him, insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. Gal. ii. 12, 13.

And my soul shall live, &c.] Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help (or salvation): happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God. Ps. cxlvi. 3. 5. Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord, for he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh: blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is, for he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. Jer. xvii. 5, 6, 7, 8. Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. Ezek. xviii. 4.

14 Beheld the woman, &c.] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat. Gen. iii. 6. The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair, &c. Gen. vi. 2. And it came to pass that his master's (Potiphar's) wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, &c. Gen. xxxiv. 7. Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matt. v. 28.

15 The princes also, &c.] Wherefore his servants said unto him (David), let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat. 1 Kings i. 2. Then said the king's (Ahasuerus's) servants that ministered unto him, let there be fair young virgins sought for the king; so Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house-royal, &c. Esther ii. 2. 16. If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked. Prov. xxix. 12. They (Israel) are all adulterers; in the day of our king, the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine. Hosea vii. 4. 5.

Pharaoh.] And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and the chief of the bakers. Gen. xl. 2. And it came to pass that Pharaoh dreamed, and behold he stood by the river. Gen. xli. 1. And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river (where she found Moses) now when Pharaoh heard this thing (that Moses slew an Egyptian), he sought to

slay Moses. Exod. ii. 5. 15. And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter and brought her into the city of David. 1 Kings iii. 1. Now, behold thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed (saith Rab-shakeh to Hezekiah), even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean it will go into his hand and pierce it: so is Pharaoh, king of Egypt, unto all that trust on him. 2 Kings xviii. 21. (Cause all the nations to drink of the wine cup of my fury), Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people. Jer. xxv. 15. 19. They did cry "there" (“at Euphrates"), Pharaoh, king of Egypt, is but a noise. Jer. xlvi. 17. Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and say unto him, thou art like a young lion of the nations, and thou art as a whale in the seas, and thou camest forth with thy rivers and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their rivers. Ezek. xxxii. 2.

Taken into, &c.] And Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent and took Sarah. Gen. xx. 2. And "he" ("Hegai, the king's (Ahasuerus') chamberlain") preferred "her" (" Esther") and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women. Esther ii. 9. So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife, whosoever toucheth her, shall not be innocent. Prov. vi. 29. Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled; but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. Heb. xiii. 4.

16 Entreated Abram, &c.] And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. Gen. xiii. 2. And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife. Gen. xx. 14.

He had sheep, &c.] And the Lord hath blessed my master greatly (said Abraham's servant), and he become great; and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. Gen. xxiv. 35. he (Isaac) had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants. Gen. xxvi. 14. And I (Jacob) have oxen, asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants.
