CHAPTER XLVI.

AND Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer-sheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, 2

after the destruction of Ziklag by the Amalekites) found an Egyptian in the field. And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins; and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him, for he had eaten no bread, nor drank any water three days and three nights. 1 Sa. xxx. 12. Wilt thou not revive us again, that thy people may rejoice in thee. Ps. lxxxv. 6. Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place; with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Is. lvii. 15. After two days will "he" ("the Lord") revive us in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Ho. vi. 2.

28 It is enough.] And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive. Ge. xlvi. 30. Then took he (Simeon) "him" ("the infant Jesus") up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation. Lu. ii. 28, 29, 30. A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And ye now therefore have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice; and your joy no man taketh from you. John xvi. 21, 22.

CHAP. XLVI.-1 Beer-sheba.] And she (Hagar) departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. Ge. xxi. 14. and com. He (Abraham) called that place Beer-sheba; because there "they" ("Abraham and Abimelech") sware both of them. Ge. xxi. 31. And he (Isaac) removed from thence (Gerar), and digged another well; and for that they (the herdmen of Gerar) strove not; and he called the name of it Rehoboth. And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba. Ge. xxvi. 22, 23. And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran. Ge. xxviii. 10. And all Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord. 1 Sa. iii. 21.

And offered sacrifices.] And Abel, he also (as his brother Cain) brought of the firstlings of his flock. Ge. iv. 4. Noah builded an altar unto the Lord, and took of every clean beast, VOL. I.

and of every clean fowl, and offered burntofferings on the altar. Ge. viii. 20. And he (Abram) removed from thence (Sichem) unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west and Hai on the east; and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord. Ge. xii. 8. And Abraham went and took the ram (caught in a thicket by his horns, as a substitute for his son Isaac), and offered it up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. Ge. xxii. 13. And he (Jacob) erected there (at Shalem, a city of Shechem) an altar, and called it El-elohe-Israel. xxxiii. 20. Let us arise, and go up to Bethel (said Jacob), and I will make there an altar unto God. So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan (that is Bethel), he and all the people that were with him. And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbeth-el, because there God appeared unto him when he fled from the face of his brother. Ge. xxxv. 3. 6, 7. And it was so, when the days of their feasting (the feasting of Job's children) were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Job i. 5. Take unto you now (saith the Lord) seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt-offering, and my servant Job shall pray for you, &c. Job xlii. 8.

Unto the God of his father, &c.] See Ge. xxi. 33; xxvi. 23. 25. And behold, the Lord stood above it (the ladder in Jacob's vision), and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham, thy father, and the God of Isaac. Ge. xxviii. 13. Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me (said Jacob to Laban), surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father judge betwixt us. Ge. xxxi. 42. 53.

2 In the visions of the night.] After these things, the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram, I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. And (afterwards) when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him: and "he" ("the Lord") said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in B b

3 Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I 4 will there make of thee a great nation: I will go down with thee

a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them, and they shall afflict them four hundred years. Ge. xv. 1. 12, 13. and com. And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham; and he said, Here am I (when about to sacrifice Isaac). Ge. xxii. 11. He (Balaam) hath said (prophesying the happiness of Israel), which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open. Nu. xxiv. 4. And he (Uzziah, king of Judah) sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God; and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper. 2 Chr. xxvi. 5. A thing was secretly brought to me (said Eliphaz to Job) in thoughts, from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men. Job iv. 12, 13. For God speaketh once (said Elihu to Job), yea, twice; yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men in slumberings upon the bed. Job xxxiii. 14, 15. Then (after having desired mercies of the God of heaven) was the secret (of Nebuchadnezzar's dream) revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Da. ii. 19. And there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias: and he said, I am here (when sent by the Lord to restore Paul to sight). Ac. ix. 10. He (Cornelius, the centurion) saw in a vision evidently, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius (being commanded to send for Peter, who preached Christ to him and his company). Ac. x. 3. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: there stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us (where he soon after converted Lydia, a seller of purple, and cast out a spirit of divination). Ac. xvi. 9.

Jacob, Jacob.] It came to pass, that God did tempt Abraham (commanding him to offer up Isaac), and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. Ge. xxii. 1. And Moses said (when he saw that the bush, in which the angel of the Lord appeared, burned with fire, and was not consumed), I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burned. And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses: and he said, Here am I. Ex. iii. 3, 4. Ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark was, the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. And the Lord called yet again, Samuel: and Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I, for thou didst call me:

and he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child. Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down; and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak Lord, for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the Lord came, and stood and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. 1 Sa. iii. 4-10. And he (Saul of Tarsus, stricken to the earth by a light from heaven, as he was going to Damascus to persecute the followers of Christ) fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me ? Ac. ix. 4. And there came a voice to "him” (“Peter,” being prepared by an heavenly vision for the meeting of Cornelius, the centurion), Rise, Peter; kill and eat. Ac. x. 13.

3 Fear not to go down, &c.] See Ge. xv. L. and com. And the Lord appeared unto him (Abraham), and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of; sojourn in "this land” (“Gerar”), and I will be with thee, and bless thee. xxvi. 2, 3. Thus saith the Lord God that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine when thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burnt; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. Is. xliii. 1, 2. And Gedaliah (the governor appointed by the king of Babylon over those that were not carried away captive into Babylon) sware unto " them" (the “captains" of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men), saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans; dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. Je. xl. 9. Fear not, Paul (said the angel of God to the apostle, in his dangerous voyage towards Rome from Adramyttium); thou must be brought before Cæsar: and lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. Ac. xxvii. 24.

I will there make of thee a great nation.} See chap. xii. 2. and com. And Israel dweit in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein. and grew and multiplied exceedingly. xxxvii. 27. The Lord your God hath mulaplied you; and behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude (said Moses to the children of Israel). De. i. 10. When the time of the promise drew nigh, which God

into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. And Jacob rose up 5 from Beer-sheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. And they took their cattle, and their goods, 6 which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him: His sons, and his sons' 7 sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his

had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt. Ac. vii. 17.

4 I will go down with thee.] Behold, I am with thee (said God to Jacob, in the vision of the ladder), and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. Ge. xxviii. 15. Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers. Ge. xlviii. 21. See verse 3. and com.

I will also surely bring thee up again.] That nation whom they (Israel) serve, will I judge (said God to Abram): and afterward shall they come out with great substance: in the fourth generation they shall come hither (to the land of Canaan) again. Ge. xv. 14. 16. My father made me swear (said Joseph to Pharaoh), saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. His sons carried him (Jacob) into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah. And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. Ge. 1. 5. 24, 25. I have surely seen the affliction of my people (saith the Lord), and I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. Ex. iii. 8.

:

And Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.] And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. Ge. 1. 1. 5 Jacob rose up from Beer-sheba.] So Jacob went down into Egypt and died, he and our fathers. Ac. vii. 15.

In the wagons.] Then Jacob (departing from Laban) rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels: and he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten in Padan-aram; for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan. Ge. xxxi. 17, 18.

Take you wagons (said Pharaoh to Joseph, as a command to his brethren) out of the land of Egypt, for your little ones, and for

your wives, and bring your father, and come. So he sent his brethren away, and they departed: and (when they came into the land of Canaan) they told him (Jacob) all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived. Ge. xlv. 19. 24. 27. And Pharaoh called unto Moses and said (being terrified at the plague of darkness), Go ye, serve the Lord: only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you. And Moses said, Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind: for thereof must we take, to serve the Lord our God; and we know not with what we must serve the Lord, until we come thither. Ex. x. 24. 26.

6 Into Egypt.] Know of a surety (said God to Abram) that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them, and they shall afflict them four hundred years. Ge. xv. 13. Thou knowest (said the messengers of Moses to the king of Edom) how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time: and the Egyptians vexed us and our fathers. Nu. xx. 15. Thy fathers went down into Egypt (said Moses) with threescore and ten persons: and now the Lord thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude. De. x. 22. And thou shalt speak and say before the Lord thy God (in offering the basket of first-fruits, said Moses), A Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there with a few, and became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous. De. xxvi. 5. I gave unto Isaac, Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt (said Joshua to the tribes of Israel). Jos. xxiv. 4. When Jacob was come into Egypt (said Samuel), and your fathers cried unto the Lord, then the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.

Sa. xii. 8. Israel also came into Egypt (saith the Psalmist): and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham. Ps. cv. 23. Thus saith the Lord God (by Isaiah), My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. Is. lii. 4. Jacob (said Stephen) went down into Egypt, and died, he and our fathers. Ac. vii. 15.
