the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever, therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden. Ge. iii. 22, 23. And "they" (the "inhabitants" of the earth having one language) said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. Ge. xi. 4. And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men; and he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and

Joseph hindermost. Ge. xxxiii. 1. 2. And God Almighty give you mercy before the man (said Jacob to Judah), that he may send away your other brother (Simeon) and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved. And (on their return to Egypt) he (Joseph) lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son. Ge. xliii. 14. 29. My lord asked his servants (said his brethren to Joseph), saying, Have ye a father or a brother? And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him. And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father his father would die. And thy servant, my father, said unto us (when we told him we would not go down unless our youngest brother was with us), Ye know that my wife bare me two sons; the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn to pieces, and I saw him not since; and if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. How shall I go up to my father (said Judah), and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father. Ge. xliv. 19, 20. 22-34.

5 For the famine, &c.] And there was a famine in the land (of Canaan), and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. Ge. xii. 10. And there was a famine in the land besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham; and Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines, unto Gerar. Ge. xxvi. 1. And all countries came into Egypt, to Joseph, for to buy corn, because that the famine was so sore in all lands. Ge. xli. 57. Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction, and our fathers found no sustenance. Ac. vii. 11. And there

stood up one of them (the prophets who came from Jerusalem unto Antioch) named Agabus, and signified by the spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cæsar. Ac. xi. 28.

6 Governor.] Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled; only in the throne will I be greater than thou. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. Ge. xli. 40, 41. And he (God) hath made me (Joseph) lord of all Egypt. Joseph is yet alive (said his brethren to their father), and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. Ge. xlv. 8. 26. He (the Lord) called for a famine upon the land; he sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant, whose feet they hurt with fetters; he was laid in iron. The king (Pharaoh) sent and loosed him; he made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance. Ps. cv. 16-21. God delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. Ac. vii. 10.

He it was that sold, &c.] And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. And Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. And the famine was over all the face of the earth. And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians. Ge. xli. 55, 56.

Bowed down themselves.] And he (Abraham) lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them he ran to meet them from the tent-door, and bowed himself toward the ground. Ge. xviii. 2 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and be bowed himself with his face toward the ground. Ge. xix. 1. Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field (said Joseph, relating his dream to his brethren), and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. And his brethren said unto him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams and for his words. And he dreamed yet another dream, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more. And, behold, the sun and the moon, and the eleven stars, made obeisance to me. Ge. xxxvii. 7-9. And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house (for he was yet

him with their faces to the earth. And Joseph saw his brethren, 7 and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye ? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food. And Joseph 8 knew his brethren, but they knew not him. And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

there), and they fell before him on the ground. Ge. xliv. 14. Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. Re. iii. 9.

7 Roughly.] And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. Ye are spies; hereby ye shall be proved. By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither. Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you. And he put them all together into ward three days. If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison. Bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. Ge. xlii. 9-20. And his disciples came and besought him (Jesus), saying, Send her (the woman of Canaan, who sought mercy for her daughter, who was grievously vexed with a devil) away, for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord help

me.

But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. Mat. xv. 23-26.

8 But they knew not him.] Their eyes were holden that they should not know him. Lu. xxiv. 16. And when she (Mary Magdalene) had thus said (complaining that she knew not where they had laid her Lord), she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. John xx. 14. When the morning was now come (after Peter had toiled all night fishing, and caught nothing) Jesus stood on the shore; but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. John xxi. 4.

9 Remembered the dreams, &c.] See chap. xxxvii. 5-9. and com.

Ye are spies.] See verse 9. 16. 30, 31. 34. Send thou men (said the Lord to Moses), that they may search the land of Canaan, &c. And Moses, by the commandment of the Lord, sent them from the wilderness of Paran. All those men were heads of the children of Israel. And Moses sent them (twelve in number, one of each tribe,) to spy out the land of Canaan, &c. to see the land, what it is; whether it be

good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents or strong holds; and what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, &c. Nu. xiii. 2-20. And Joshua, the son of Nun, sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went and came into an harlot's house named Rahab, and lodged there. And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, &c. And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were. About the time of the shutting of the gate the men went out, whither the men went I wot not; pursue after them quickly, for ye shall overtake them. But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof. So the two men (having promised to spare Rahab and family, and directed her to distinguish the window of her house by a scarlet line,) returned, and descended from the mountain (where, by Rahab's direction, they had hid themselves for three days to avoid the pursuers), and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them. Jos. ii. 1-6. and 23. they" (the "chief priests and scribes") watched him (Jesus), and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men; that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him into the power and authority of the governor. Lu. xx. 20. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were compassed about seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. He. xi. 30, 31.

10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy 11 servants come. We are all one man's sons; we are true men, thy 12 servants are no spies. And he said unto them, Nay, but to see 13 the nakedness of the land ye are come. And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of

10 My lord.] Be lord over thy brethren (said Isaac to Jacob), and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee. Shalt thou indeed reign over us (said his brethren to Joseph)? or shalt thou, indeed, have dominion over us? Ge. xxxvii. 8. 11 True men. en.] If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison (said Joseph to his brethren). The lord of the country said to us (said Joseph's brethren to their father), Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men. Ge. xlii. 19. 33, 34. He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory; but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. John vii. 18. Ye fools and blind: whosoever shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and all things thereon: and whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and my him that dwelleth therein: and he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
