CHAPTER XXXVII.

AND Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, 1 in the land of Canaan. These are the generations of Jacob. 2 Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. Now Israel loved Joseph more than all 3 his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. And when his brethren saw that 4 their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him,

The world cannot hate "you" (said Jesus to his disciples), but me it hateth, because I testify of it that the works thereof are evil. John vii. 7. Now therefore (said Judah), when I come to thy servant (Jacob), my father, and the lad (Benjamin) be not with us (seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life), it shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die. Ge. xliv. 20. 31.

A coat of many colours.] And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him. And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father, and said, This have we found, know now whether it be thy son's coat, or no. Ge. xxxvii. 23. 32. Have they (Israel) not sped (sang Deborah and Barak)? Have they not divided the prey, to every man a damsel or two? To Sisera a prey of divers colours, a prey of divers colours of needlework, of divers colours of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil? Ju. v. 30.
