6 Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and 7 they bowed themselves. And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and 8 Rachel, and they bowed themselves. And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? and he said, These are to 9 find grace in the sight of my lord. And Esau said, I have enough, 10 my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself. And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then

I will put my trust in him: and again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. He. ii. 13.

8 By all this drove.] And he (Jacob) lodged there that same night, and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother, two hundred she-goats, and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams, thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty sheasses, and ten foals. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face: peradventure he will accept of me. Ge. xxxii. 13, 14, 15. 20.

And

To find grace.] And I have oxen and asses, flocks, and menservants and womenservants, and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight. Ge. xxxii. 5. it came to pass from the time that "he" ("Potiphar") had made "him" ("Joseph") overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake: and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house and in the field. Ge. xxxix. 5. And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins. Es. ii. 17.

9 I have enough.] And Isaac his father answered, and said to him (Esau), Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above. Ge. xxvii. 39. The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough; the grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough. Pr. xxx. 15, 16. There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour: neither is his eye satisfied with riches: neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? Ec. iv. 8.

My brother.] See chap. iv. 9; xxvii. 41. and com. And the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until even, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I again go up to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? Ju. xx. 23. When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him. Pr. xvi. 7. And (Ananias) putting his hands on

"him" ("Saul"), said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hast sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. Ac. ix. 17. And when “they” (“the brethren") heard it (what was wrought among the Gentiles), they glorified the Lord, and said unto him (Paul), Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law. Ac. xxi. 20. For we have great joy and consolation in love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother; if thou count me therefore a partner, receive him (Onesimus) as myself, not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved. Phil. vii.

10 If now I have found grace, &c.] Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou (the angel of the Lord) hast shewed unto 'me" ("Lot") in saving my life: and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die. Ge. xix. 19. And he (Israel) called his son Joseph and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt. Ge. xlvii. 29. If now I (Joseph) have found grace in your eyes (the house of Pharaoh), speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, My father made we swear: now therefore let me go, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. Ge. l. 4, 5. And Moses said unto the Lord, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me; yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight; now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight; and consider that this nation is thy people. Ex. xxxiii. 12, 13. Then she (Ruth) fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that " thou" ("Boaz") shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger! Ru. ii. 10. Thy "father" ("Saul") certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly, as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth (said David to Jonathan), there is but a step between me and death. 1 Sa. xx. 3. Thus saith the Lord,

receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with

me.

Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; 11 because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it. And he said, Let us 12 take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee. And he 13 said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and

I have seen thy face, &c.] See chap. xxxii. 30. and com. And Judah spake unto "him" ("Jacob"), saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. Ge. xliii. 3. “I” (“ David”) will make a league with thee (Abner): but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul's daughter when thou comest to see my face. 2 Sa. iii. 13. And the king said, Let him (Absalom) turn to his own house, and let him not see my face; so Absalom returned to his own house, and did not see the face of the king; so Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face. Now therefore (said Absalom to Joab), let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me. 2 Sa. xiv. 24. 28. 32. "He" ("man") shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy. Job xxxiii. 26. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy spirit from me. Ps. li. 11. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones: for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. Mat. xviii. 10. And "they" ("the servants of God") shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. Re. xxii. 4.

11 My blessing that is brought, &c.] See chap. xxxii. 13. 20. And Caleb said unto her (Achsah), What wouldest thou? who answered, Give me a blessing, for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. Jos. xv. 19. Ju. i. 15. And now this blessing which thine "handmaid" ("Abigail") hath brought unto my "lord" ("David"), let it even be given to the young men that follow my lord. 1 Sa. xxv. 27. And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you in the spoil of the enemies of the Lord. 1 Sa. xxx. 26. And he (Naaman) returned to the "man of God" ("Elisha"), and all his company, and came and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel; now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant. 2 Ki. v. 15. "Therefore" ("that ye may be ready") I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up before

hand your bounty: but this I say, He who soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 2 Co. ix. 5, 6.

And because I have enough.] See verse 9. Not that I speak (says St. Paul) in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatever state I am, therewith to be content; I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound, and to suffer need; but I have all, and abound: having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. Phi. iv. 11, 12. 18.

Enough.] What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Ro. viii. 31, 32. Therefore let no man glory in men: for all things are your's. 1 Co. iii. 21. As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. 2 Co. vi. 10. See Phi. iv. 12. 18. preced. com. Godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 1 Ti. iv. 8.

Urged him.] And when they urged (Elisha) till he was ashamed, he said, Send (the fifty strong men to seek his master Elijah); they (the sons of the prophets) sent therefore fifty men, and they sought three days, but found him not. 2 Ki. ii. 17. But he (Elisha) said, As the Lord liveth, before whom I stand, will receive "none" (“no blessing"); and he (Naaman) urged him to take it, but he refused. 2 Ki. v. 16. And Naaman said (to Gehazi, the servant of Elisha), Be content, take two talents; and he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him. 2 Ki. v. 23. And the lord (who made a great supper) said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. Lu. xiv. 23.

13 The children are tender.] And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the Lord must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries. 1 Ch.

the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should 14 overdrive them one day, all the flock will die. Let my Lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be 15 able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir. And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me: And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight 16 of my lord. So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir. 17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and

xxii. 5. A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast; but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. Pr. xii. 10. He (the Messiah) shall feed his flock like a shepherd; he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Is. xl. 11. I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God. Ez. xxxiv. 15. I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick; and I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. Ez. xxxiv. 16. 25. So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee; he saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith unto him the second and the third time, Simon son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? and he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. John xxi. 15, 16, 17.

14 Be able to endure.] See Is. xl. 11. and Ez. xxxiv. 15, 16. 23. 25. preced. com. And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. Mar. iv. 33. We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak. Ro. xv. 1. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat; for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 1 Co. iii. 2. For though "I" ("Paul") be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more: to the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 1 Co. ix. 19. 22.

Unto Seir.] See chap. xxxii. 3. and com. Then we turned and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the Lord spake unto us (the Israelites) and we compassed mount Seir many days. De. ii. 2. Lord, when thou wentest out of Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the

clouds also dropped water. Ju. v. 4. And now behold the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not (behold how they reward us). 2 Ch. xx. 10. Thus saith the Lord God, Because that Moab and Seir do say, Behold, the house of Judah is like unto all the heathen: therefore I will open the side of Moab. Ez xxv. 8, 9. Son of man, set thy face against mount Seir, and prophesy against it, and say unto it, Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, O mount Seir, I am against thee, and I will stretch out my hand against thee, and I will make thee most desolate. Ez. XXXV. 2, 3.

15 Let me find grace, &c.] And Shechem said unto her (Dinah's) father, and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give (as a dowry). Ge. xxxiv. 11. And "they" (the "people of Egypt") said, Thou (Joseph) hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants. Ge. xlvii. 25. Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord (said Ruth to Boaz). Rs. ii. 13. Let the young men find favour in thine eyes (said David by his messengers to Nabal). 1 Sa. xxv. 8. And Ziba (the servant of Mephibosheth) said, I humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy (David's) sight, my lord, O king. 2 Sa. xvi. 4.

17 Succoth.] And in the valley (were given by Moses to the children of Gad), Beth-aram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, &c. Jos. xiii. 27. And he (Gideon) said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people (which they refused). And the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him. And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness, and briers, and with them be taught the men of Succoth. Ju. viii. 5. & 16 In the plain of Jordan did the king (Hiram, of Tyre,) cast "them" ("the vessels for the house of the Lord"), in the clay-ground be tween Succoth and Zarthan. 1 Ki. vii. 46 God hath spoken in his holiness, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth. Ps. Ix. 6. And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside chil

made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth. And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, 18 which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram ; and pitched his tent before the city. And he bought a parcel of a 19 field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money. And 20 he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-Israel.

CHAPTER XXXIV.

AND Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, 1 went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem 2

dren. Er. xii. 37. And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness. Ex. xiii. 20. 18 Shalem.] And John also was baptizing in Enon, near to "Salem," because there was much water there. John iii. 23. Then cometh "he" ("Jesus") to a city of Samaria, which is called "Sychar," near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. John iv. 5. And (Jacob and our fathers) were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor, the father of Sychem. Ac. vii. 16.

Shechem.] And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, &c. &c. and they presented themselves before God. Jos. xxiv. 1. And Abimelech, the son of Jerubbaal, went to Shechem unto his mother's brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father. Ju. ix. 1. See John iv. 5. and Ac. vii. 16. preced. com. under "Shalem.

Padan-aram.] See chap. xxv. 20. and xxviii. 6, 7, and com. And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padan-aram. Ge. xxxv. 9. These be the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, in Padan-aram, with his daughter Dinah; all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three. Ge. xlvi. 15.

19 He bought a parcel of a field.] And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre; the field and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure. And the field and the cave that is therein were made sure unto Abraham, for a possession of a buryingplace, by the sons of Heth. Ge. xxiii. 17. 20. In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron, the Hittite, for a possession of a burying-place. The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein was from the children of Heth. Ge. xlix. 30. 32. And the

bones of Joseph which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem, for an hundred pieces of silver; and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph. Jos. xxiv. 32. See John iv. 5. and Ac. vii. 16. and verse 18. under “Shalem."

20 An altar.] See chap. viii. 20. xii. 7, 8. xiii. 8. And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God. Ge. xxi. 33.

El-elohe-Israel.] And he (the angel) said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel. Ge. xxxii. 28. And “he” (“ Jacob") built there an altar (at Luz, or Beth-el) and called the place El-beth-el. Ge. xxxv. 7.

CHAP. XXXIV.-1 Dinah, &c.] And afterwards (after having born six sons) she (Leah) bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah. Ge. xxx. 21. See chap. xxxiii. 18, and com. on Padan-aram.

Ge.

The daughters of the land.] And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite. xxvi. 34. And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me? Ge. xxvii. 46. Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan (said Isaac to Jacob). Ge. xxviii. 6. And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed. Ge. xxx. 13. Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? Thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt. Je. ii. 36. (The younger widows) having cast off their first faith, learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also, and busy-bodies, speaking things which they ought not. 1 Ti. v. 13. Teach the young women to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, &c. Tit. ii. 5.

2 Shechem.] See chap. x. 17. And he (Jacob) bought a parcel of a field where he

the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he 3 took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and 4 spake kindly unto the damsel. And Shechem spake unto his 5 father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife. And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they

had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money. Ge. xxxiii. 19.

Saw her.] The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair, and they took them wives of all which they chose. Ge. vi. 2. And Joseph was a goodly person and well favoured; and it came to pass, that his master's (Potiphar's) wife cast her eyes upon Joseph. Ge. xxxix. 6, 7. And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines. Ju. xiv. 1. And it came to pass in an evening-tide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house, and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself, and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. 2 Sa. xi. 2. I made a covenant with my eyes, why then should I look upon a maid? If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, and if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door, then let my wife grind unto another. Job xxxi. 1. 9, 10. He that walketh with wise men shall be wise; but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. Pr. xiii. 20. Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Mat. v. 28.

Took her.] And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. Ge. xx. 2.

Defiled her.] And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her (thy wife, who had been a captive), thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her. De. xxi. 14. If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her, then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die. If a man find a damsel that is not betrothed, and lie with her, and they be found; then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days. De. xxii. 23, 24. 28, 29.

3 His soul clave unto Dinah, &c.] Ruth clave unto her (her mother-in-law Naomi). Ru. i. 14. The soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 1 Sa. xviii. 1.

Kindly unto the damsel.] Now therefore arise (said Joab to David, mourning for Absalom), go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy

servants. 2 Sa. xix. 7. And Hezekiah spake comfortably unto all the Levites, that taught the good knowledge of the Lord. 2 Ch. xxx. 22. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned, for she hath received at the Lord's hand double for all her sins. Is. xl. 2. Therefore, behold, I will allure her (Jerusalem), and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. Hos. ii. 14.

4 Get me this damsel, &c.] And he (Ishmael) dwelt in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt. Ge. xxi. 21. And he (Samson) came up and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath, of the daughters of the Philistines; now, therefore, get her for me to wife. Ju. xiv. 2. And I (said Tamar to Amnon), whither shall I cause my shame to go? As for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now, therefore, I pray thee speak unto the king, for he will not withhold me from thee. 2 Sa. xiii. 13.

5 Now his sons were with his cattle.] And he (Jacob) removed that day the he-goas that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hands of his sons. Ge. xxx. 35. And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? Come and I will send thee unto them; and he said to him, Here am I. And he said to him, Go. I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks, and bring me word again. Ge. xxxvii. 13, 14. But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised "him" (“ Saul,” as having gone to seek the asses), and brought him no presents: but he held his peace. 1 Sa. x. 27. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. 1 Sa. xvi. 11. But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Beth-lehem. I Sa. xvii. 15. And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar. 2 Sa. xiii. 22. Now his elder son (the brother of the prodigal) was in the field, and as he came and drew nigh to the house he heard music and dancing. And he said to
