Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou 19 hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and 1 die: Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, 20 and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. And he said unto him, See, I have 21 accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow

much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem. Acts ix. 13. And there came a voice to him (in the vision), Rise, Peter; kill and eat: but Peter said, Not so, Lord, for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. Acts x. 14.

19 And thou hast magnified thy mercy.] I will love the Lord my strength: the Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. Ps. xviii. 1, 2, and throughout. I waited patiently for the Lord, and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry; he brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. Ps. xl. 1, 2, and throughout. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name; bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. Ps. ciii. 1, 2, and throughout. Praise ye the Lord: O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? who can shew forth all his praise? Ps. cvi. 1, 2, and throughout. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy. Ps. cvii. 1, 2, and throughout. I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. Ps. cxvi. 1, 2, and throughout. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant, with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus: howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all long-suffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. 1 Tim. i. 14. 16.

Lest some evil take me.] Say, pray thee, thou art my sister, that it may be well with me for thy sake; and "my" soul (“Abram's) shall live because of "thee" (" Sarai"). Gen. xii. 13. Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake “them” (“the Israelites"), and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befal them, so that they will say in that day, Are not those evils come upon us, because our God is not among us? Deut. xxxi. 17. And David ́said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines. 1 Sam. xxvii. 1.

Because they forsook the Lord their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them and served them; therefore hath the Lord brought upon them all this evil. 1 Kings ix. 9. Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more? I will remember the works of the Lord, surely I will remember thy wonders of old. Ps. lxxvii. 7. 11. I was greatly afflicted; I said in my haste, All men are liars! Ps. cxvi. 10, 11. And his disciples came to him and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us; we perish: and he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Matt. viii. 25, 26. He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? Mark ix. 19. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? Rom. viii. 31.

20 This city is near.] And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain. Gen. xix. 30. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding; be not wise in thine own eyes ; fear the Lord, and depart from evil. Prov. iii. 5. 7. Shall a trumpet be blown in the city; shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it? Amos iii. 6.

And my soul shall live.] See chap. xii. 13. Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee, and let thy judgments help me. Ps. cxix. 175. Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live. Isa. lv. 3.

He

21 I have accepted thee.] If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? Gen. iv. 7. My servant Job shall pray for "you” (“his three friends"), for him will I accept: the Lord accepted Job. Job xlii. 8, 9. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. Ps. xxxiv. 15. He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer. Ps. cii. 17. will fulfil the desire of them that fear him; he also will hear their cry, and will save them. Ps. cxlv. 19. Thus saith the Lord unto "this people" ("Judah”), Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet: therefore the Lord doth not accept them. Jer. xiv. 10. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. Matt. xii. 20. Wherefore in all things it behoved him (Christ) to be made like unto his brethren,

Haste thee, escape thither: for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. 23 Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. The sun was 24 risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the

22 For I cannot do any thing, &c.] And when he (the angel) saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him: and he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel ; for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. Gen. xxxii. 25. 28. And therefore let me alone (said God to Moses), that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of thee a great nation. Exod. xxxii. 10. Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they. Deut. ix. 14. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty; there shall no evil befal thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. Ps. xci. 1. 10. Thus saith the Lord, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not, for a blessing is in it; so will I do for my servants' sakes, that I may not destroy them all. Isa. lxv. 8. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk and healed them. Mark vi. 5. If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful; he cannot deny himself. 2 Tim. ii. 13. Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, in hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began, to Titus mine own son after the common faith. Tit. i. 2.

Called Zoar.] And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as thou comest unto Zoar. Gen. xiii. 10. These (four kings) made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar. Gen. xiv. 2. His (Moab's) fugitives shall flee unto Zoar. Isa. xv. 5. They have uttered

their voice from Zoar even unto Horonaim. Jer. xlviii. 34.

24 Rained upon Sodom, &c.] (The stranger shall say) that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein; like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which the Lord overthrew in his anger and in his wrath. Deut. xxix. 23. "It" ("destruction") shall dwell in his tabernacle (the tabernacle of the wicked), because "it" ("his tabernacle") is none of his; brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. Job xviii. 15. Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest. Ps. xi. 6. Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like Gomorrah. Isa. i. 9. And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, Isa. xiii. 19. And let that man be as the cities which the Lord overthrew, and repented not (said Jeremiah, speaking of the man who brought tidings of his birth). Jer. xx. 16. As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it. Jer. xlix. 18. and 1. 40. For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom that was overthrown, as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her. Lamen. iv. 6. Behold this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom (0 Jerusalem), pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy; and they were haughty, and committed abomination before me, therefore I took them away as I saw good. Ezek. xvi. 49, 50. How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together. Hosea xi. 8. I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a fire-brand plucked out of the burning, yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord. Amos iv. 11. Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah (saith the Lord). Zeph ii. 9. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day; but I say unto

Lord out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the 25 plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. But his wife looked back from behind him, and 26 she became a pillar of salt. And Abraham gat up early in the 27 morning to the place where he stood before the Lord: And he 28 looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. And it came to pass, when God destroyed 29 the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent

you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgement than for thee. Matt. xi. 23, 24. As it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; but the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Luke xvii. 28, 29. And (God) turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly. 2 Pet. ii. 6. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, in like manner giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jude 7.

25 All the plain.] And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan. Gen. xiii. 10. All these (the four kings) were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea. Gen. xiv. 3. A fruitful land (he turneth) into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein. Ps. cvii. 34.

26 Looked back.] Look not behind thee. Gen. xix. 17. The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways. Prov. xiv. 14. In that day, he which shall be upon the house top, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away; and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back; remember Lot's wife. Luke xvii. 31, 32. Now the just shall live by faith; but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. Heb. x. 38.

She became a pillar of salt.] The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar; for they offered them before the Lord, therefore they are hallowed; and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel. Num. xvi. 38.

27 Early in the morning.] My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. Ps. v. 3.

To the place where he stood, &c.] And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham stood yet before the Lord; and the Lord went his way as soon as he had left communing with Abraham. Gen. xviii. 22. 33, Behold this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread,

and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, &c. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me, therefore I took them away as I saw good. Ezek. xvi. 49, 50. I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. Hab. ii. 1. Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. Hab. ii. 1.

28 And, lo, the smoke of the country.] A fruitful land (maketh he) into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein. Ps. cvii. 34. And (God) delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked. 2 Pet. ii. 7. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jude 7. The same (that worship the beast) shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb; and the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever, and they have no rest day nor night who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. Rev. xiv. 10, 11. The kings of the earth who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with "her" ("Babylon") shall bewail her and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning. And (the merchants and mariners) cried when they saw the smoke of their burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! Rev. xviii. 9. 18. And again they (the great voice of much people in heaven) said Alleluia, and her smoke rose up for ever and ever. And he (the angel) said unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God. Rev. xix. 3. 9. But the fearful and the unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death. Rev. xxi. 8.

29 God remembered Abraham.] And God

Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities 30 in the which Lot dwelt. And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner 32 of all the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we

He (the Lord) hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations. For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant. Ps. cv. 8. 42. The Lord preserveth all them that love him. Ps. cxlv. 20. Then shall ye remember your own evil ways and your doings that were not good, and shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations. Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord God, be it known unto you. Be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel. Ezek. xxxvi. 31, 32. How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? How shall I deliver thee, Israel?

30 Lat went up out of Zoar.] See verse 17. The sun was risen upon the earth, when Lot entered into Zoar. Gen. xix. 23.

He feared to dwell in Zoar.] Unstable as water, thou (Reuben) shalt not excel, because thou wentest up to thy father's bed. Gen. xlix. 4. Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way (Judah)? Thou also shalt be ashamed, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria; yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head; for the Lord hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them. Jer. ii. 36, 37. A double

To come in unto us.] And Adam knew his wife Eve, and she conceived. Gen. iv. 1. When the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children unto them, the same became mighty men, &c. Gen. vi. 4. I pray thee (said Sarai to Abram) go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived. Gen. xvi. 2. 4. And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry, and raise up seed to thy brother. Gen. xxxviii. 8. And she (Tamar) put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife, &c. Gen. xxxviii. 9. 14. and throughout to verse 30. If brethren dwell together, and one of them die and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother unto her. Deut. xxv. 5. And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel; only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach. Isa. iv. I.

32 Come, &c.] See Gen. xi. 3.

Drink wine, &c.] And "he" (“ Noah") drank wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered in his tent. Gen. ix. 21. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Pr. xxiii. 31. 33. Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness. Thou art filled with shame for glory; drink thou also, &c. The cup of the Lord's right hand shall be turned

Seed of our father.] None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him. Lev. xviii. 6. Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Mark xii. 19.

33 Drink wine.] See com. verse 32. Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Pr. xx. 1. Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath rednes of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? Pr. xxiii. 29. 30. 35. 34 I lay yesternight, &c.] The show of their countenance (of Jerusalem and Judah) doth witness against them, and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not: woe unto their soul, for they have rewarded evil unto themselves. Is. iii. 9. Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed. Je. iii. 3. O Lord, are not thine eyes upon the truth? Thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction; they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return. Je. v. 3. Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush. Therefore they shall fall among them that fall; at the time that I visit them, they shall be cast down, saith the Lord. Je. vi. 15. and viii. 12.

35 That night also.] What is man that thou (God) art mindful of him, and the son of man that thou visitest him? Ps. viii. 4. For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again but the wicked shall fall into mischief. Pr. xxiv. 16. And I find more bitter than

death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands. Whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her. Ec. vii. 26. And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness. Lu. xxi. 34. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples, and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth, take heed lest he fall. 1 Co. x. 11, 12.

36 Were both the daughters, &c.] See ver. 8. and Le. xviii. 6, 7. at ver. 33. And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. Ju. i. 7. And Samuel said, as thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal. 1 Sa. xv. 33. See He. ii. 15. at ver. 32. with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Matt. vii. 2.

37 Moabites.] Woe to thee, Moab; thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped and his daughters into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites. Nu. xxi. 29. And the children of Israel set forward and pitched in the plains of Moab, and Moab was sore afraid of the people. Nu. xxii. 1. &c. There shall come a star out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. Nu. xxiv. 17. &c. And the Lord said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle, for I will not give thee of their land for a possession, because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession. And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them, for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession, be
