this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river 19 Euphrates; The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kad20 monites, And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land, unto the land which he sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Gen. 1. 24. I (the Lord) am come down to bring them up out of that land, unto a good land and large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. Exod. iii. 8. And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers. Exod. vi. 4. Mine angel shall go before thee, and bring thee unto the Amorites, &c. &c.; and I will cut them off, and I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come; and I will set thy bounds from the Red sea, even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river, for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and thou shalt drive them out before thee. Exod. xxiii. 23. 27. 31. Behold I drive out before thee the Amorite, &c. &c. Exod. xxxiv. 11. Then your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the coast of Edom, and your south border shall be the outmost coast of the salt sea eastward. Numb. xxxiv. 3. When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee; seven nations greater and mightier than thou, thou shalt smite them and utterly destroy them. Deut. vii. 1. Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours. Deut. xi. 24. This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed. Deut. xxxiv. 4. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto "you" ("Joshua"), as I said unto Moses. From the wilderness, and this Lebanon, even unto the great river, the river Euphrates. Josh. i. 3, 4. See Josh. chaps. xii. and xix. throughout. And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt. 1 Kings iv. 21. And he reigned over all the kings from the river even unto the land of the Philistines, and to the border of Egypt. 2 Chron. ix. 26. Thou (the Lord) foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him (Abraham), to give the land of the Canaanites, &c. &c. to his seed, and hast performed thy words, for thou art righteous.

Nehem. ix. 8. Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance (saith the Lord to Jacob). Ps. cv. 11. And the

From the river of Egypt, &c.] border (of Canaan) shall fetch a compass from Azmon unto the river of Egypt, and the goings out of it shall be at the sea. Numb. xxxiv. 5. From thence it (the south border of the lot of Judah) passed towards Azmon, and went out unto the river of Egypt. Josh. xv. 4. And it shall come to pass in that day (of God's chastisements), that the Lord shall beat off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel. Isa. xxvii. 12.

Euphrates.] And the fourth river (of Eden) is Euphrates. Gen. ii. 14. David smote also Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his border at the river Euphrates. 2 Sam. viii. 3. And eastward he (Reuben) inhabited unto the entering in of the wilderness, from the river Euphrates. 1 Chron. v. 9.

19 Kenites.] And he (Balaam) looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, strong is thy dwelling-place, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock; nevertheless, the Kenite shall be wasted until Asshur shall carry thee away captive. Numb. xxiv. 21, 22.

20 Rephaims, &c.] And the kings that were with him (Chedorlaomer) smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth, Karnaim, &c. Gen. xiv. 5. And "it" ("the glory of Jacob") shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim. Isa. xvii. 5.

21 Amorites.] And Canaan begat Sidon, his first born, and Heth, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite. Gen. x. 15, 16. But if thou shalt indeed obey his (the angel's) voice, and do all that I speak (said God), then I will be an enemy to thine enemies, and an adversary to thine adversaries; and I will send hornets before thee which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, before thee. Exod. xxiii. 22. 28. And I will send an angel before thee, and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorites, &c. &c. Exod. xxxiii. 2; xxxiv. 11. Deut. vii. 1.

Girgashites.] And when he (Jesus) was come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils. Matt. viii. 28,

CHAPTER XVI.

Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children; and she had an 1 handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said 2 unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after 3 Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. And he went in unto Hagar, 4

CHAP. XVI.-1 Bare him no children.] Wherefore she (Sarah) said unto Abraham, cast out this bond-woman and her son, for the son of this bond-woman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac; and God said unto Abraham, let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice, for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. Gen. xxi. 10. 12. And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless? behold, to me thou hast given no seed. Gen. xv. 2, 3. And Isaac entreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. Gen. xxv. 21. And his (Manoah's) wife was barren. Judges xiii. 2. And they (Zacharias and Elizabeth) had no child, because that Elizabeth was barren; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren, for with God nothing shall be impossible. i. 7. 37.

And

An Egyptian.] See chap. xii. 16. Sarah saw the son of Hagar, the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking; and his mother took him (Ishmael) a wife out of the land of Egypt. Gen. xxi. 9. 21.

Whose name was Hagar.] These are the two covenants; the one from Mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. Gal. iv. 24.

2 The Lord hath restrained, &c.] I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her. Gen. xvii. 16. Sarah thy wife shall have a son. Gen. xviii, 10. The Lord had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife. Gen. xx. 18. And the Lord was entreated of him (Isaac), and Rebekah his wife conceived. Gen. xxv. 21. Am I in God's stead (said Jacob to Rachel), who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? and she said, Behold my maid, Bilhah, go in unto her, and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her when Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife; and God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb. Gen. xxx. 2, 3. 9. 22. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Ps. cxxvii. 3.

Obtain children by her.] She shall bear upon my knees (said Rachel of her maid, Bilhah), that I also may have children by her: and Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son, therefore called she his name Dan. Gen. xxx. 3. 6. If his master have given "him" ("his manservant") a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters, the wife and the children shall be her master's. Exod. xxi. 4. The Lord make the woman (said the people), that is come into "thine" house ("Boaz"), like Rachel, and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel. Ruth iv. 11.

Hearkened to the voice of Sarai.] Now the serpent was more subtile than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made; and when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and the man said, the woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree and I did eat: and unto Adam he (the Lord) said, because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, thou shalt not eat of it, cursed is the ground for thy sake. Gen. iii. 1. 6. 12. 17.

3 Abram had dwelt ten years, &c.] See Gen. xii. 4. 5.

Gave her, &c.] And Sarai said unto Abram, my wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. Gen. xvi. 5. And "she" (" Rachel") gave "him" ("Jacob") Bilhah, her handmaid, to wife: when Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife. Gen. xxx. 4. 9.

To be his wife.] But unto the sons of the concubines which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son (while he yet lived) eastward, unto the east country.

Gen. xxv. 6. There was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of Mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine. Judges xix. 1. And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem. 2 Sam. v. 13. And he (Solomon) had seven hundred wives,

and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her 5 mistress was despised in her eyes. And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her 6 eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee. But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her 7 face. And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water 8 in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. And he

princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 1 Kings xi. 3. For this Agar is Mount Sina, in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. Gal. iv. 25.

4 Her mistress was despised, &c.] And her adversary (Peninnah, Elkanah's second wife) also provoked "her" (“Hannah"), for to make her fret, because the Lord had shut up her womb. 1 Sam. i. 6. Saul's daughter (Michal) looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord, as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, and she despised him in her heart. 2 Sam. vi. 16. Such is the way of an adulterous woman ; she eateth and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness: for three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear for a servant when he reigneth, and a fool when he is filled with meat; for an odious woman when she is married, and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress. Prov. xxx. 20, 21, 22, 23. And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself, and to Apollos for your sakes, that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up one against another. 1 Cor. iv. 6. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil. 1 Cor. xiii. 4. 5.

5 My wrong be upon thee, &c.] But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me; and Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things; but one thing is needful. Luke x. 40, 41, 42.

The Lord judge between me and thee.] The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us (said Laban to Jacob). Gen. xxxi. 53. And "they" ("the officers of the Israelites") said unto "them" ("Moses and Aaron"), the Lord look upon you, and judge, &c. Exod. v. 21. The Lord judge between me and thee (said David to Saul), and the Lord avenge me of thee: the Lord therefore be judge (said David to

Saul), and judge between me and thee, and see and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand. 1 Sam. 24. 12. 15. Thus the king (Joash) remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada, “his” (“Zechariah's”) father, had done to him, but slew his son; and when he died he said, the Lord look upon it, and require it. 2 Chron. xxiv. 22. The Lord shall judge the people: judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me. Ps. vii. 8. Judge me, O Lord, for I have walked in mine integrity. Ps. xxvi. 1. Judge me and plead my cause against an ungodly nation. Ps. xliii. 1.

6 Abram said unto Sarai, &c.] And Abram said unto Lot, let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee: is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me.

Gen. xiii. 8, 9. He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding; but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly. Prov. xiv. 29. A soft answer turneth away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger: better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith: a wrathful man stirreth up strife, but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife. Prov. xv. 1. 17. 18. Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with “them” (“with your wives”) according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife as unto the weaker vessel. 1 Pet. iii. 7.

In thy hand, &c.] For all the goods of his master, (Abraham) were in his (the servant ́s) hand. Gen. xxiv. 10. And the Lord said unto Satan, behold he (Job) is in thine hand, (but save his life). Job ii. 6. And he gave "them" ("Israel") into the hand of the heathen, and they that hated them ruled over them; their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand. Ps. cvi. 41, 42. Then Zedekiah the king said, behold he (Jeremiah) is in your hand. Jer. xxxviii. 5.

Fled from her face.] But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh. Exod. ii. 15. As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place. Prov. xxvii. & If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place, for yielding pacifieth great offences. Eccles. x. 4.

7 Found her, &c.] The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. Prov. xv. 3.

said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai. And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, 9 and submit thyself under her hands. And the angel of the Lord 10

Fountain in the way, &c.] And they (the descendants of Ishmael) dwelt from Havilah to Shur. Gen. xxv. 18. So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur. Exod. xv. 22. And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah, until thou comest to Shur. 1 Sam. xv. 7. 8 Sarai's maid, &c.] See verses 1. 4. Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling; knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. Ephes. vi. 5. 8. Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour; and they that have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren, but rather do them service because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. 1 Tim. vi. 1, 2. Whence camest thou? &c.] And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, where art thou? Gen. iii. 9. What hast thou done? (said God to Cain). Gen. iv. 10. If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place, for yielding pacifieth great offences. Eccles. x. 4. Hast thou not procured this unto thyself (Israel), in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when he led thee by the way? and now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt? Jer. ii. 17, 18.

I flee, &c.] Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the "king" ("Saul") hear the words of his servant (David): if the Lord have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering; but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the Lord, for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the Lord, saying, Go and serve other gods. I Sam. xxvi. 19.,

9 Submit thyself, &c.] See Eccles. x. 4. preced. com. Be filled with the Spirit, &c.; submitting yourselves one to another, in the fear of God. Ephes. v. 21. Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; not with eye service, as men-pleasers, but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. Ephes. vi. 5, 6. Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things, not answering again. Titus ii. 9. Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward: for ye were as sheep going astray, but are now returned unto the shepherd and bishop of your souls. 1 Pet. ii. 18. 25. Likewise ye younger submit yourselves unto the elder; yea, all of you be subject

one to another, and be clothed with humility, for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble; humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. 1 Pet. v. 5, 6.

10 The angel of the Lord, &c.] And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time (and said, in blessing I will bless thee, &c.). And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voice. Gen. xxii. 15. 18. And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob! And I said, here am I. And he said, I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me; now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred. Gen. xxxi. 11. 13. And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. And Jacob called the name of the place Penuel; for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. Gen. xxxii. 24. 30. And "he" ("Israel") blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day, the angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless "the lads” (“ Ephraim and Manasseh"); and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. Gen. xlviii. 15, 16. And the angel of the Lord appeared unto "him" (" Moses") in a flame of fire, out of the midst of a bush. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. Exod. iii. 2. 6. And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I will never break my covenant with you. Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them (the inhabitants of the land) out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. Judges ii. 1. 3. And there came an angel of the Lord, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash, the Abi-ezrite, and his son Gideon thrashed wheat by the wine-press. And the Lord said unto him, surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man. Then the angel put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh, and the unleavened cakes (which Gideon had made ready as an offering); and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the Lord departed out of

In all their (Israel's) affliction he was afflicted; and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and his pity he redeemed them, and he bare them and carried them all the days of old. Isa. lxiii. 9. “He” (“Jacob") had power with God; he had power over the angel, and prevailed; he wept and made supplication unto him, even the Lord God of hosts: the Lord is his memorial. Hosea xii. 4, 5. For thus saith the Lord God of hosts, After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you; for he that toucheth you, toucheth the apple of his eye; for behold I will shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me. Zech. ii. 8, 9. Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me. Mal. iii. 1. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. John i. 18. And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him (Moses) in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire, in a bush. This is he that was in the church in the wilderness, with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers, who received the lively oracles to give unto us. Acts vii. 30. 38. Keep this commandment, which in his times he (Christ) shall shew, who is the blessed and only potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see. 1 Tim. vi. 15, 16.

I will multiply, &c.] And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee; behold I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly: twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. Gen. xvii. 20. And also of the son of the bond-woman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed. And she went and sat her down over against him, a good way off, as it were a bow-shot; for she said, let me not see the death of the child: and she sat over against him, and lift up her voice and wept. Gen. xxi. 13. 16. Now these are the generations of Ishmael, &c. &c. And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as

thou goest toward Assyria. Gen. xxv. 12. 18. The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines, with the inhabitants of Tyre. Assur also is joined with them (the enemies of God): they have holpen the children of Lot. Ps. lxxxiii. 6, 7, 8.

11 Shalt call, &c.] And God said (unte Abraham), Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac. Gen. xvii. 19. And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben; and she conceived again, and bare a son, and she said, now will I praise the Lord; therefore she called his name Judah, and left bearing. Gen. xxix. 32. 35. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isa. vii. 14. She (Mary) shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus. Behold a virgin shall be with child (as said the Lord by the prophet), and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel; which, being interpreted, is "God with us." Matt. i. 21. 23. wife, Elizabeth, shall bear thee a son (said Gabriel to Zacharias), and thou shalt call his name John. Behold (said the angel to Mary), thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. And he (Zacharias) asked for a writing-table, and wrote, saying, his name is John. Luke i. 13. 31. 63.

Thy

Because the Lord hath heard, &c.] And Joseph called the name of the first-born Manasseh; for God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house. And the name of the second called he Ephraim; for God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction. Gen. xli. 51, 52. When the time was come about, after Hannah had conceived, she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, because I have "asked" him of the Lord. 1 Sam. i. 23.

The

Hath heard thy affliction.] Surely she (Leah) said, the Lord hath looked upon my affliction. And she conceived again, and bare a son, and said, because the Lord hath heard that I was hated. Gen. xxix. 32, 33. children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage; and they cried, and their cry came up unto God, by reason of the bondage; and God heard their groaning; and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. Exod. ii. 23, 24. And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people, which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry, by reason of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. Erod. iii.
