wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus ? And Abram said, Behold, 3 to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. And, Behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, 4 saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth

soul; therefore will I hope in him. Lam. iii. 24. Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours. 1 Cor. iii. 22. For he (God) hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee; so that we may boldly say, the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. Heb. xiii. 5, 6. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, behold, the tabernacle of God is with men; and he will dwell with them; and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Rev. xxi. 3, 4.

2 What wilt thou give me, &c.] Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee; and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing. Gen. xii. 1, 2.

Childless.] And Isaac entreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. Gen. xxv. 21. And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her "sister" ("Leah"); and said unto Jacob, give me children, or else I die. And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? Gen. xxx. 1, 2. And she (Hannah) vowed a vow, and said, O Lord God of Hosts, if thou wilt indeed look upon the affliction of thine hand-maid, and remember me, and not forget thine hand-maid, but wilt give unto thine hand-maid a man-child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head. 1 Sam. i. 11. Lo children are an heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Ps. cxxvii. 3. Hope deferred maketh the heart sick, but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life. Ps. xiii. 12. Even unto them will I give in mine house, and within my walls, a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters; I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off. Isa. lvi. 5. He promised he would give “it” (“the land”) to “him” (“Abraham”) for a possession, and to his seed after him, when, as yet, he had no child. Acts vii. 5.

The steward of my house, &c.] And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and I will

make thee swear by the Lord. And the servant took ten camels, of the camels of his master, and departed (for all the goods of his master were in his hand): and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor (to seek a wife for Isaac). Gen. xxiv. 2, 3. 10. And Joseph found grace in his (Potiphar's) sight, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand; and he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. is none greater in this house than "I" (" said Joseph”), neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife. Gen. xxxix. 4. 6. 9. And they (Joseph's brethren) came near to the steward of Joseph's house, &c. Gen. xliii. 19. And he (Joseph) commanded the steward of his house, saying, fill the men's (his "brothers"") sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth. Gen. xliv. 1. A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren. Prov. xvii. 2.

3 Behold, to me thou hast given, &c.] I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great. Gen. xii. 2. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth; so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Gen. xiii. 16. Hope deferred maketh the heart sick, but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life. Prov. xiii. 12. Righteous art thou, O Lord, when I plead with thee; yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments. Jer. xii. 1. Cast not away therefore thy confidence, which hath great recompence of reward, for ye have need of patience, that after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. Heb. x. 35, 36.

Born in my house, &c.] And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive (by the four kings), he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, &c. Gen. xiv. 14. He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at length. Prov. xxix. 21. And an handmaid that is heir to her mistress (is one of the three things that disquieteth the earth). Prov. xxx. 28. got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house. Eccles. ii. 7.

4 Shall come forth, &c.] And I will bless "her" ("Sarah"), and give thee a son also of her. Gen. xvii. 16. In Isaac shall thy seed be called. Gen. xxi. 12. And when thy (David's) days be fulfilled, and thou shalt

xii. 8. And (he shall take) two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, such as "he" ("the leper") is able to get; and the one shall be a sin-offering, and the other a burnt-offering. And he shall offer the one of the turtledoves, or of the young pigeons, such as he can get. Lev. xiv. 22. 30. Gather my saints together unto me, those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. Ps. 1. 5. (They brought the infant, Jesus, to Jerusalem) to offer a sacrifice, according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. Luke ii. 24.

Three years old, &c.] My heart shall cry out for Moab: his fugitives shall flee unto Zoar, an heifer of three years old. Isa. xv. 5.

10 Divided, &c.] And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in twain and passed between the parts thereof, the princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs and the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf, I will even give them into the hand of their enemies. Jer. xxxiv. 18, 19. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Tim. ii. 15.

The birds divided he not.] And he shall cleave "it" ("the bird") with the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder. Lev. i. 17. 11 Fowls came down, &c.] And say, thus saith the Lord God, A great eagle with great wings, long-winged, full of feathers which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar. There was also another great eagle, with great wings, and many feathers, and behold this vine (emblematic of Jerusalem) did bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation. Ezek. xvii. 3. 7. And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up. Matt. xiii. 4.

Abram drove them away, &c.] I hate vain thoughts, but thy law do I love. Ps. cxix. 113. Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity, and quicken thou me in thy way. Ps. cxix. 37.

12 4 deep sleep, &c.] See com. chap. ii. 21.

Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me, for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. Yet heard I the voice of his words; then was I in a deep sleep, on my face, and my face toward the ground. Dan. x. 8, 9. And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep; and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. Acts xx. 9.

An horror of great darkness, &c.] But know, that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself. The Lord will hear, when I call upon him. Stand in awe, and sin not; commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still; offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord. Ps. iv. 3, 4, 5. And Saul arose from the earth, and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man, but they led him by the hand, and brought him to Damascus; and he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink. Acts ix. 8, 9.

Gen.

13 Thy seed shall be a stranger, &c.] I will give unto thee, and thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger. xvii. 8. Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him, for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Exod. xxii. 21. Also thou shalt not oppress a stranger, for ye know the heart of a stranger; seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Exod. xxiii. 9. But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself, for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Levit. xix. 34. Love ye, therefore, the stranger, for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Deut. x. 19. Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance, when they were but a few men in number, yea very few men, and strangers in it. Israel also came into Egypt, and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham. turned their heart to hate his people, and to deal subtilely with his servants. Ps. cv. 11, 12. 23. 25. And God spake on this wise, that his seed should sojourn in a strange land, and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years; and the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will

afflict them four hundred years. And also that nation, whom they 14 shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou 15

I judge, said God; and after that shall they come forth and serve me in this place. Acts vii. 6, 7. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed, and he went out, not knowing whither he went. (The excellent men of old time) these all died in faith; not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. Heb. xi. 8. 13.

Four hundred years, &c.] Now the sojourn ing of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years; and it came to pass, at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the self-same day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt. Exod. xii. 40, 41. And this I say, that the covenant that was confirmed before, of God, in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. Gal. iii. 17. 14 That nation, &c.] See chap. xlvi. through

And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant, wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched-out arm, and with great judgments. Exod. vi. 5, 6. Exod. chapters vii. and xiv. throughout. But the Lord hath taken you and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day. Deut. iv. 20. And the Lord shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes. Deut. vi. 22. Thou shalt not be afraid of them, but shalt well remember what the Lord thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt. The great temptations which thine eyes saw, and the signs and the wonders, and the mighty hard, and the stretched-out arm whereby the Lord thy God brought thee out; so shall the Lord thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid. Deut. vii. 18, 19. And know ye this, for I speak not with your children, which have not known, and which have not seen the chastisement of the Lord your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his stretched-out arm; and what he did to the army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to their chariots; how he made the water of the Red Sea to overflow them, as they pursued after you; and how the Lord hath destroyed them unto this day. Deut. xi. 2. 4.

Jacob and his children went down into Egypt; and when they cried unto the Lord, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them and covered them; he it is that brought us up and our fathers, out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed. Josh. xxiv. 4. 7. 17. When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the Lord, then the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place (said Samuel). 1 Sam. xii. 8. And (thou God), didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red Sea. And thou didst divide the sea before them; so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land: and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters. Nehem. ix. 9. 11. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight; that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Ps. li. 4. They remembered not how he (the Lord) had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan. And (God) smote all the firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham. Ps. lxxviii. 43. 51. They shewed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham. He brought them forth also with silver and gold; and there was not one feeble person among their tribes. cv. 27. 37. Who (God) sent tokens and wonders into the midst of thee, O Egypt, upon Pharaoh and upon all his servants. For the Lord will judge his people, and he will repent himself concerning his servants. Ps. cxxxv. 9. 14.

Ps.

With great substance, &c.] And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, and it shall come to pass, that when ye go, ye shall not go empty; but every woman shall borrow of her neighbour jewels of silver and jewels of gold, and raiment, and ye shall put them upon your sons and your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians. Exod. iii. 21, 22. And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses, and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment; and the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required; and they spoiled the Egyptians. Exod. xii. 35, 36. He brought them (Israel) forth also with silver and gold. Ps. cv. 37.

15 Thou shalt go, &c.] Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age,

16 shalt be buried in a good old age. But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is 17 not yet full. And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down,

an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. Gen. xxv. 8. Aaron shall be gathered to his people. Numb. xx. 24. And when thou (Moses) hast seen "it" ("the promised land"), thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people (said the Lord), as Aaron thy brother was gathered. Numb. xxvii. 13. And also all that generation (of Israel) were gathered unto their fathers. Judges ii. 10. Thou (whom God correcteth) shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in his season. Job v. 26. Man goeth to his long home; then shall the dust return to its earth as it was, and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Eccles. xii. 7. David, after he had served his own generation, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption. Acts xiii. 36.

In peace.] Behold (saith the Lord) I will gather "thee" ("Josiah") to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace. 2 Chron. xxxiv. 28. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace. Ps. xxxvii. 37. The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart, and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil He shall enter into peace. Isa. lvii. 1, 2. But 66 go 'thou" ("Daniel") thy way, till the end be; for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days. Dan. xii. 13. God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. Matt. xxii. 32. For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself. Which hope (the hope set before us through Christ) we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil. Heb. vi. 13. 19. These all died in faith, &c. Now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly. Wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he hath prepared for them a city. Heb.

xi. 13. 16.

Buried.] Give me (said Abraham to the sons of Heth) a possession of a burying-place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight. And after this Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah. Gen. xxiii. 4. 19. Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years, and was gathered to his people, and his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave in Machpelah, which is before Mamre. Gen. xxv. 8, 9. And Isaac gave up the ghost and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days, and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. Gen. xxxv. 29. “I” (“Jacob") am gathered unto my people; bury me with my fathers, in

the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite. There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah, his wife; and there I buried Leah, (one of Jacob's wives). Gen. xlix. 29. 31. His sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him (Jacob) in the cave of the field of Machpelah. Gen. 1. 13. If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say that an untimely birth is better than he. Eccles. vi. 3. At "that time" ("the destruction of Jerusalem"), they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves. And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped; they shall not be gathered nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth. Jer. viii. 1, 2.

A good old age.] And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life, which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years. Gen. XXV. 7. So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel. 1 Chron. xxiii. 1. And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour. 1 Chron. xxix. 28. Thus shalt thou (whom God correcteth) come to thy grave in full age. Job v. 26. So Job died, being old and full of days. Job xlii. 17.

16 Fourth generation, &c.] Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. Exod. xii. 40.

Amorites.] And he (Ahab) did very abominably in following idols, according to all things, as did the Amorites, whom the Lord cast out before the children of Israel. 1 Kings xxi. 26. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise as some men count slackness, but is long-suffering to us ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Pet. iii. 8, 9.

Not yet full.] And in the latter times of their kingdom (of Grecia), when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. Dan. viii. 23. Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, lift up now thine eyes, and see

and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. In the same day the Lord 18 made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given

what is this that goeth forth. And I said, what is it? And he said, this is an ephah that goeth forth. And this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah. And he said, this is wickedness; and behold there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven (after he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof). Then said I to the angel that talked with me, whither do these bear the ephah? And he said unto me, to build it an house in the land of Shinar; and it shall be established and set there upon her own base. Zech. v. 5-11. Fill ye up, then, the measure of your fathers; that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel, unto the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. Matt. xxiii. 32. 35. And they (the Jews) please not God, and are contrary to all men, forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles, that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway, for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. 1 Thess. ii. 16.

17 Smoking furnace, &c.] And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of the bush, and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burned. Exod. iii. 2, 3. But the Lord hath taken you and brought you forth, out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt. Deut. iv. 20. Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand (to give a sign to Gideon), and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes (which he had brought to offer), and there rose up fire out of the rock and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Judges vi. 21. For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar (where Manoah, with his wife, were offering), that the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar; and Manoah and his wife (the mother of Samson), looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground. Judges xiii. 20. And David built "there" (at "Ornan's thrashing-floor") an altar unto the Lord, and offered up burnt-offerings, and peace-offerings; and called upon the name of the Lord, and he answered him from heaven by fire, upon the altar of burnt-offering. 1 Chron. xxi. 26. For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. Isa. lxii. 1. Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant, which I commanded your fathers, in the

day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, &c. Jer. xi. 3, 4.

And a burning lamp that passed, &c.] For thou art my lamp, O Lord, (said David, in his psalm of thanksgiving,) and the Lord will lighten my darkness. 2 Sam. xxii. 29.

Passed between those pieces.] And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof, the princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, &c. &c. which passed between the parts of the calf, I will even give them into the hand of their enemies. Jer. xxxiv. 18, 19.

Unto thy seed will I give this land (said God to Abraham). Gen. xxiv. 7. He (the Lord, said David,) hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and sure. 2 Sam. xxiii. 5. I will make (said God) an everlasting covenant with you (0 house of Israel), even the sure mercies of David. Isa. Iv. 3. Behold the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord; for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Jer. xxxi. 31. 34. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good, but I will put my fear in their hearts that they shall not depart from me. Jer. xxxii. 40. If my covenant be not with day and night, then will I cast away the seed of Jacob and David my servant. Jer. xxxiii. 25, 26. Brethren, I speak after the manner of men. Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. And this I say, that the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. Gal. iii. 15. 17. Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work, to do his will. Heb. xiii. 20.
