January 25.

Here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. -HEB. xiii. 14.

SWEET and blessed country,

The home of God's elect,

O sweet and blessed country,
That eager hearts expect!

Jesus, in mercy bring us

To that dear land of rest;
Who art, with God the Father.
And Spirit, ever blest.

January 26.

The love of Christ, which passeth knowledge.-EPH. iii. 19.

LOVE, how deep! how broad! how high!
It fills the heart with ecstasy,

That God, the Son of God, should take

Our mortal form for mortals' sake.

For us He was baptized, and bore
His holy fast, and hungered sore;
For us temptation sharp He knew ;
For us the tempter overthrew.

Watch ye xiv. 38.

and pray,

January 27.

lest ye enter into temptation. -MARK

FAITHFUL souls! if any know,

For much forgiven, how much you owe;
For Jesus' sake your lamps well trim,
And shine as steady lights for Him.

Still you must watch, and work and pray;
Still press rejoicing on your way;
Still learn to shun temptation's snare,
For sin besets you everywhere!

January 28.

I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.-1 COR. ii. 2.

[EVER farther than Thy Cross,

Never higher than Thy feet;

Here earth's precious things seem dross,
Here earth's bitter things grow sweet.

Here we learn to serve and give,

And rejoicing, self deny;
Here we gather love to live,

Here we gather faith to die.

January 29.

Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.-MATT. xxv. 40.

FOUNTAIN of good, to own Thy love,
Our thankful hearts incline;

What can we render, Lord, to Thee,
When all the worlds are Thine?

Thy face with reverence and with love,
We in Thy poor would see;

O may we minister to them,

And in them, Lord, to Thee.

That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.-JOHN Xvii. 21.

HOU who upon that last sad night,

Tr

Ere for us thou didst die,

So sweetly spakest of the might
Of heaven-born charity.

Ne'er may Thy little flock forget,
Lest scattered it should be,

That Thy last thought on this was set--
The members' unity.

January 31.

There is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.-PROV. xviii. 24.

IS well to know there is a Friend

Whose love and kindness never end,
Who loves when sickness, grief, and age,
O'ershadow life's concluding page;

Nay more, when storms and darkness lower,
Abides in faithfulness and love
When all forsake, and faithless prove.

February 1.

It came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom.-LUKE xvi. 22.

M

Y God! if 'tis Thy wise decree
That here in want I languish,

May I, like Lazarus, in Thee
Find comfort in my anguish.

May angels bear my soul like his,
From this poor world of sorrow,
To endless joys and heavenly bliss,
And an eternal morrow.

February 2.

When he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.-JOHN xvi. 13.

HOU hast Thy Spirit promised

Thy words of truth to show;

We know Thy blood availeth
To wash us white as snow.

O let Thy peace unhindered
Abide in every heart,
Cheer every hopeless mourner,
And bid our fears depart.

February 3.

Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.-Ps. cl. 6.

ROM all that dwell below the skies

Let the Creator's praise arise;

Let the Redeemer's name be sung
Through ev'ry land, by ev'ry tongue.

Eternal are Thy mercies, Lord;
Eternal truth attends Thy word;

Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore,

Till suns shall rise and set no more.
