January 19.

His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.-LAM. iii. 22, 23.

N

[EW every morning is the love

Our wakening and uprising prove,
Through sleep and darkness safely brought,
Restored to life, and power and thought.

New mercies, each returning day
Hover around us while we pray,

New perils past, new sins forgiven,

New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.

January 20.

Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.-LUKE XXIV. 29.

THEN the soft dews of kindly sleep

WHE

My wearied eyelids gently steep,

Be my last thought, how sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast.

Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.

January 21.

Unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom - HEB. i. 8.

M

Y Saviour reigns,- -on high in glory reigns!
His throne shall ever last!

With power Divine the sceptre He sustains,
His trials are all past.

At death my trials closing,

My soul with Him shall rest;

My flesh, in hope reposing,

Shall wake, with glory blest.

January 22.

Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.-Ps. lxxiii. 25.

N the still silence of the voiceless night

IN

When chased by airy dreams the slumbers flee, Whom in the darkness doth my spirit seek, O God, but thee !

For what is there on earth that I desire,
Of all that it can give or take from me ;
Or whom in heaven doth my spirit seek,
O God, but thee!

January 3.

The apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.-LUKE

xvii. 5.

NCREASE our faith. O wash our souls

INC

More clean from guilty stain,

Lest, though thou comest quickly, we
Who wait should wait in vain.

No watch too long for Him who comes,

Nor any waiting vain,

For crowns like those which God shall give
When he hath come again.

January 4.

Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not. -ISA. XXXV. 3, 4.

[ocr errors][merged small]

ORD, when the wearied hands give way,
And wearied knees are failing,

Then make thy mighty arm my stay,

Though faith and hope seem quailing;
That so my heart drink in new strength,
And fear no more the journey's length;

O'er doubt and pain prevailing.

January 5.

That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.-Ps. lxvii. 2.

G

OD of grace, O let Thy light

Bless our dim and blinded sight;

Like the day-spring in the night,

Bid Thy grace to shine.

To the nations led astray

Thine eternal love display;

Let Thy truth direct their way,

Till the world be Thine.

January 6.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.-MATT. xi. 28.

JESUS, joy of saints on high,

Thou hope of sinners here;

Attracted by those loving words,
To Thee I lift my prayer.

Wash Thou my wounds in that dear blood
Which forth from Thee doth flow;

New grace, new hope inspire; a new
And better heart bestow.

January 23.

We declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children.-ACTS xiii. 32, 33.

2

LAD, as from afar the tidings
Telling of redemption won ;

Bright the beam, when from the hidings
Of God's face, breaks forth the sun.

O'er all the earth an anthem ringing,
Sounds thy praise, O Prince of Peace.
Loud and louder grows the singing,
As the ransomed bands increase.

January 24.

Ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. JOHN XV. 7.

Y happy lot what blessings fill
I at my Father's throne,

May ask my Father what I will,
And trust it shall be done.

O Holy Father, grace impart
My wayward will incline,-
Chasten and purify my heart,
Make Thy will only mine.
