October 1.

Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.-MATT. XV. 27.

H! never let Thy servant rest,
Till, of my part in Christ possest,
I on Thy mercy feed:
Unworthy of the crumbs that fall,
Yet raised by Him who died for all,
To eat the children's bread.

Whate'er obstructs Thy pardoning love,
Or sin, or righteousness remove,
Thy glory to display :

My heart of unbelief convince,
And now absolve me from my sins,
And take them all away.

October 2.

I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.-Ps. xxxiv. 1.

ORD, for the mercies of the night,

My grateful thanks I pay,

And unto Thee I dedicate

The first-fruits of the day.

Let this day praise Thee, O my God!

And so let all my days;

And, oh! let mine eternal day

Be thine eternal praise.

October 3.

Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.-MARK viii. 34.

HEER up, thou silent soul,

Press blithely on;

Watch not the clouds, nor shiver in the showers,
Heed not the shadows, neither count the hours,
Till heaven be won.
Work and deny thyself;

Take up thy cross;

Follow the Master wheresoe'er He leads,
Be a disciple not in words but deeds:
Shrink not from loss.

Count well, count well the cost,
Nor grudge to pay;

Be it reproach, or toil, or pain, or strife,
Be it the loss of all,-gold, fame, and life ;-
The end is day!

October 4.

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; that he may set him with princes, even the princes of his people.-Ps. cxiii. 7, 8.

O Him whose arm sways wide creation,

It is a light thing, at His will

To bring the great to lowly station,
And make the lowly greater still;
"Tis He whose wondrous ways we know,
Who lifteth up and layeth low.

October 5.

Draw me, we will run after thee.--SONG OF SOLOMON i. 4.

ORD, take my heart from all things not of Thee,
And let Thy presence sweet abide with me.
All without Thee is dark, but in Thy light

The gloomiest cloud beams forth a rainbow bright.
Oh draw me after Thee by Thine own ways,
Of prayer, of work, of patience, and of praise.
And when, dear Lord, my days on earth are o'er,
Oh call me whither Thou art gone before,

To gaze upon Thy face for evermore.

We all do fade as a leaf.-ISA. Ixiv. 6.

EAVES of autumn, tell the story

How our lives must also pass,

And that this world's pomp and glory
Fadeth like the summer grass.

Earthly joys are vain and hollow,
Earthly hopes but poor at best;
Christ's true martyrs! we would follow
In your steps, and gain your rest.

Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.-Ps. xxvii. 7.

HOUGH we strayed and wandered from Thee,

[ocr errors]

Thou wilt hear us when we cry;

Fix our roving hearts upon Thee,

And be Thou for ever nigh:
God of heaven,

Lead us to Thy courts on high.

And when all shall meet before Thee,
When Thy power Thou wilt display,
Lord, receive us into glory

At the great, the judgment day;
Blessed Jesus!

Never more from Thee to stray.

The path of the just is as a shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.—PROV. iv. 18.

UST such is the Christian: his course he begins
Like the sun in a mist, while he mourns for his

sins,

And melts into tears,-then he breaks out and shines,
And travels his heavenly way;

But when he comes nearer to finish his race,
Like a fine setting sun, he looks richer in grace,
And gives a sure hope, at the end of his days,
Of rising in brighter array.

He will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths. - ISA. ii. 3.

[ocr errors]

O our benighted minds reveal
The glories of His grace;

And bring us where no clouds conceal
The brightness of His face.

His love within us shed abroad
Life's ever springing well;
Till God in us, and we in God,
In love eternal dwell.

Look unto me.-ISA. xlv. 22.

BOOK unto Thee! through pleasure's smiles

When Satan tempts to ill,

I look for strength to stand his wiles,
Unmoved as Zion hill.

Look unto Thee! when called by death,
I'll look to Thee alone;

And clothed in righteousness through faith,
Appear before Thy throne.

Look unto Thee! when that dread day,

Shall heaven and earth destroy,

My soul shall hail Thy glory's ray,

And look to Thee with joy.
