January 9.

Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him.-ISA. iii. 10.

THAT cheering words are these,

WH

Their sweetness who can tell!

In time and to eternal days

"Tis with the righteous well.

In every state secure,

Kept as Jehovah's eye,

"Tis well with them while life endures,

And well when called to die.

January 10.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.-GEN. i. 3.

HOU, whose Almighty word

Chaos and darkness heard,

And took their flight,

Hear us, we humbly pray,
And where the Gospel day

Sheds not its glorious ray,

Let there be light.

Thou who didst come to bring,

On Thy redeeming wing,

Healing and light;

Health to the sick in mind,

Light to the inly blind,

Oh, now to all mankind

Let there be light.

January.11.

The Lord is my light.-Ps. xxvii. 1.

WEET Saviour, bless us ere we go;

Thy word into our minds instil,

And make our lukewarm hearts to glow
With lowly love and fervent will.

Through life's long day and death's dark night,
O gentle Jesus, be our light.

Grant us, dear Lord, from evil ways

True absolution and release;

And bless us, more than in past days,
With purity and inward peace.

Through life's long day and death's dark night,
O gentle Jesus, be our light.

January 12.

In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.-Ps. v. 3.

[OW that the daylight fills the sky,

Now

We lift our hearts to God on high,
That He, in all we do or say,

Would keep us free from harm to-day.

So we, when this day's work is o'er,
And shades of night return once more,
Our path of trial safely trod,

Shall give the glory to our God.

January 13.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.-MATT. ii. 10.

Unto

S with gladness men of old

Did the guiding star behold;
As with joy they hailed its light,
Leading onward, beaming bright;
So, most gracious Lord, may we
Evermore be led to Thee.

Holy Jesus, every day

Keep us in the narrow way;
And, when earthly things are past,
Bring our ransomed souls at last
Where they need no star to guide,
Where no clouds Thy glory hide.

you which believe he is precious.—1 PET. ii. 7.

ESUS! the very thought is sweet!

JESUS

In that dear name all heart-joys meet;
But oh than honey sweeter far
The glimpses of His presence are.

No word is sung more sweet than this,
No sound is heard more full of bliss,
No thought brings sweeter comfort nigh
Than Jesus, Son of God most High.

January 15.

I am the light of the world.-JOHN viii. 12.

CHRIST, who art the light and day,
Thy beams chase night's dark shades away;

The very light of light Thou art,
Who dost that blessed light impart.
O Lord, our strong defence, be nigh;
Bid all the powers of darkness fly;
Preserve and watch o'er us for good,

Whom Thou hast purchased with Thy blood.

January 16.

Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood. -REV. v. 9.

THE wisdom of th' Eternal !

O the depth of love divine!

O the sweetness of that mercy
Which in Jesus Christ did shine!
We were sinners, doomed to die;

Jesus paid the penalty.

Prince and Author of salvation,

Lord of majesty supreme,
Jesus, praise to Thee be given

By the world thou didst redeem;

Glory to the Father be,

And the Spirit, One with Thee.

January 17.

Faint, yet pursuing.-JUDGES Viii. 4.

FAINT, yet still in hope pursuing.

Kept by everlasting love,

Day by day our toils renewing
Look we towards our rest above :
Full of sin are we, and feeble,
Strong and full of mercy Thou;
Father, on thy rich compassion
Lean our weary spirits now!

January 18.

Let us not be weary in well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.-GAL. vi. 9.

E not weary, toiling Christian,

Good the Master thou shalt serve,

Let no disappointment move thee;
From thy service never swerve.

Sow in hope, nor cease thy sowing,
Lack not patience, faith, or prayer;
Seed-time passeth,-harvest hasteneth,

Precious sheaves thou then shalt bear.
