a Christian home in England. is chiefly known to them-"The Golden Treasury"has exercised a deep and widespread influence on our religious life, an influence which is still potent, if we may judge by the number of new editions which issue from the press from time to time. Many are the Christian homes in which it has been used in family worship, and it is the prized companion of many Christians in their closet devotions. Little, however, is known to English readers generally of his life, and the extent of his work in his own day and country. His life and work, however, occupy a considerable space in the religious history of Germany in the eighteenth century.

Karl Heinrich von Bogatzky was born in the year 1690, on the 7th of September, at Jankowe, in the Lordship of Militsch, in Lower Silesia, and baptised in the Roman Catholic church, as there was no Protestant church in Militsch. He was of noble birth by both sides of the house. His father was an officer in the
