2 Great is the Lord, and great his praise! What God, like him, our fear can raise ? Not such as heathen lands afford, Created first, and then ador'd.

3 Exult, ye heav's! Exult, O earth! And, partner in the sacred mirth, Let ocean in its fulness rise,

And thunder to the distant skies!

4 Rich in his gifts, ye fields, rejoice! While in his praise the woods their voice Exalt, and hail, when lowly nod,

The presence of th' approaching God! 5 He comes in awful pomp array'd! He comes, to judge the world he made ! TRUTH shall with him the cause decide, And EQUITY his sentence guide.

HYMN LI.

The mercies of God.

1 AWAKE, my soul! Awake my tongue!
My God demands the grateful song:
Let all my inmost pow'rs record
The wondrous goodness of the Lord!
2 Divinely free his mercy flows,
Forgives my sins, allays my woes:
He bids approaching death remove,
And crowns me with a father's love.

3 My youth, decay'd, his pow'r repairs;
His hand sustains my growing years;
He satisfies my mouth with food,
And feeds my soul with heav'nly good.
4 His mercy with unchanging rays
Forever shines, though time decays;
And children's children shall record
The truth and goodness of the Lord.

5 While all his works his praise proclaim,
And men and angels bless his name,
O let my heart, my life, my tongue,
Attend, and join the sacred song!

HYMN LII.

God kind and merciful.

1 LET ev'ry tongue thy goodness speak,
Thou sovereign Lord of all !
Thy strength'ning hands uphold the weak,
And raise the poor that fall.

2 When sorrow bows the spirit down,
Or virtue lies distrest

Beneath some proud oppressor's frown,
Thou giv'st the mourners rest.

3 Thy grace supports our tott'ring days,
And guides our giddy youth:
Holy and just are all thy ways,
And all thy words are truth.

Thou know'st the pains thy servants feel;
Thou hear'st thy children's cry;
And, their best wishes to fulfit,

Thy grace is ever nigh.

5 Thy mercy never shall remove

From men of heart sincere,

To save the souls whose humble love
Is join'd with holy fear.

HYMN LIII.

Praise to God for his goodness and truth.

1 I'LL praise my Maker while I've breath,
And when my voice is lost in death,

Praise shall employ my nobler pow'rs;
My days of praise shall ne'er be past,
While life, and thought, and being last,
Or immortality endures.

2 Happy the man whose hopes rely On nature's God-he made the sky,

And earth, and seas, with all their train : His truth forever stands secure,

He saves the opprest, he feeds the poor,
And none shall find his promise vain.

3 The Lord hath eyes to give the blind,
The Lord supports the sinking mind,
He sends the lab'ring conscience peace,
He helps the stranger in distress,
The widow and the fatherless,

And grants the prisoner sweet release. I'll praise him while he lends me breath, And when my voice is lost in death,

Praise shall employ my nobler pow'rs; My days of praise shall ne'er be past, While life, and thought, and being last, Or immortality endures.

HYMN LIV.

Thanks for the gospel.

1 GOD, who in various methods told
His mind and will to saints of old,
Sent his own Son with truth and grace,
To teach us in these latter days.

2 Our nation reads the written word,
That book of life, that true record;
The bright inheritance of heav'n
Is by this sure conveyance given.

3 God's kindest thoughts are here exprest,
Able to make us wise and blest;
The doctrines are divinely true,
Fit for reproof and comfort too.

O render thanks to God above,
For his rich grace, his boundless love;
Let all mankind receive his word,
And ev'ry nation praise the Lord.

HYMN LV.

The blessings of the gospel.

1 BEHOLD the morning sun
Bégins his glorious way;

His beams through all the nations run,
And life and light convey.

2 But where the heav'nly light,
From truth's enliv'ning ray,
Pours all its glory on our sight,
It forms a brighter day.

3 How perfect is thy word,
And all thy judgments just,
Forever sure thy promise, Lord,
Which we securely trust.

4 Thou gracious God, how plain
Are thy directions given!
O may we never read in vain,
But find the path to heav'n.

5 While with our heart and tongue
We spread thy praise abroad,
Accept the worship and the song,
Our Father and our God!

HYMN LVI.

The glory and success of the gospel.
1 THE heavens declare thy glory, Lord,
In every star thy wisdom shines;
But, in the volume of thy word,
We read thy name in fairer lines.

2 Sun, moon, and stars, convey thy praise
Round the whole earth, and never stand:
So, when thy truth began its race,
It touch'd and glanc'd on every laud.

3 Nor let thy spreading gospel rest,
Till through the earth thy truth has rum,

Till it has all the nations blest, That see the light, or feel the sun. Great God of righteousness arise, Bless the dark world with heavenly light, Thy gospel makes the simple wise, Thy laws are pure, thy judgment right. 5 Thy noblest wonders here we view, In souls renew'd and sins forgiven. Lord, cleanse our sins, our souls renew, And make thy word our guide to heaven.

HYMN LVII.

Praise to the God of our salvation. 1 HAIL the God of our salvation, Triumph in redeeming love; Let ns with glad exultation

Imitate the blest above.

Light of those whose dreary dwelling
Border'd on the shades of death,
He hath by his grace revealing,
Scatter'd all the clouds beneath.
3 Father, thou art all compassion,
Pure unbounded love thou art;
Hail the God of our salvation,
Praise him ev'ry thankful heart.
Joyfully on earth, adore him,

Till in heaven we take our place,
There enraptur'd, fall before him,
Lost in wonder, love and praise.

HYMN LVIII.

Bejoicing in the hope of glory.

1 THOU God of our salvation,
We joyfully adore thee,

Trusting thy care,

To keep us here,

And bring us safe in glory.
