"Nor let your hearts, if wealth increase, Be set too much upon your gain. 5 For Ged has oft his will express'd, And I this truth have fully known; To be of boundless pow'r posses'd, Belongs, of right, to God alone. 6 Though mercy is his darling grace, In which he chiefly takes delight; Yet will he all the human race According to their works requite

HYMNS.

HYMN I.

Religious inquiry.

1 ALL knowing God, 'tis thine to know
The springs whence wrong opinions flow;
To judge from principles within,
When frailty errs, and when we sin.
2 Who, among men, high Lord of all,
Thy servants to his bar may call?
Decide of heresy, and shake

A brother o'er the flaming lake?
3 Who with another's eye can read?
Or worship by another's creed ?
Revering thy command alone,
We humbly seek and use our own.
4 If wrong, forgive; accept, if right;
While faithful we obey our light;
And, cens'ring none, are zealous still,
To follow as to learn thy wlll.

5 When shall our happy eyes behold
Thy people fashion'd in thy mould ?
And charity our hneage prove,
Deriv'd from thee, O God of love? ·

HYMN II.

The heavens declare the glory of God.

1 THE spacious fortament on high,
With all the blue real sky,
And spangled heav bey
Their Great Origina.

2 Th' unwearied sun from day to day,
Does his Creator's pow'r display,
And publishes, to ev'ry land,
The work of an Almighty Hand.

3 Soon as the ev'ning shades prevail,
The moon takes up the wondrous tale,
And nightly to the list'ning earth
Repeats the story of her birth:

4 Whilst all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,

And spread the truth from pole to pole.
5 What though, in solemn silence, all
Move round the dark terrestrial ball?
What though not real voice nor sound
Amid their radiant orbs be found?

In Reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice:
Forever singing, as they shine,
"The Hand that made us is divine."

HYMN III.

To the only true God.

ETERNAL God, Almighty Cause
Of earth, and seas, and worlds unknown!
All things are subject to thy laws,

All things depend on thee alone.

2 Thy glorious being firmly stands,
Of all within itself possest;
Controll'd by none are thy commands,
Thou from thyself alone art blest.

To thee alone ourselves yowe,
To thee alone our hage pay;
All other Gods we d
Deny their cla

OW,
Anounce their sway.

Spread thy great name through every land,
Each idol deity dethrone.

Let earth with all her tongues confess
That thou the Lord art God alone.

HYMN IV.

Devotion.

1 BEFORE Jehovah's awful throne,
Ye nations, bow, with sacred joy:
Know that the Lord is God alone:
He can create, and he destroy.

2 His sovereign pow'r, without our aid,
Made us of clay, and form'd us men;
And when like wand'ring sheep we stray'd,
He brought us to his fold again.

3 Wide as the world is thy command,
Vast as eternity thy love!

Firm as a rock thy truth shall stand, When rolling years shall cease to move. We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs, High as the heav'ns our voices raise : And earth, with her ten thousand tongues, Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise. HYMN V.

The wisdom of God.

1 IN all our Maker's vast designs
Lo! his eternal wisdom shines;
Through all creation spread abroad,
Loud it proclaims the maker, God.
2 With rev'rence our admiring eyes
Survey thy wonders in the skies;
Thy wisdom round the world we see,
The spacious earth is full of thee.
3 Above the earth, beyond the sky,
Stands thy high throne of majesty ;

Nor time nor place thy power restrain,
Nor bound thy universal reign.

4 Amazing knowledge, vast and great!
What large extent, what lofty height!
Our souls, with all the powers they boast,
Are in the boundless prospect lost.

5 Lord, who can speak thy wondrous deeds?
Thy wisdom all our thoughts exceeds;
Vast and unsearchable thy ways,
Vast and immortal be thy praise.

HYMN VI.

The justice of God.

1 GREAT God, to thee, the mighty King,
Whose sovereign rule the world obeys,
With reverent hearts thy people bring
The tribute of their humble praise.

2 The earth's great sceptre fills thy hand
And, high enthron'd in majesty,
Thou givest thence to every land
The laws of truth and equity.

3 Unerring justice, Lord, is thine;
And every nation shall confess,
That thy decrees are all divine,
And all thy ways are righteonsness.
4 In judgment wise, thou wilt bestow
To every soul its due reward;
Unceasing joy the good shall know,
And live forever with their Lord.

5 But they who tread the sinner's path,
And dare thy righteous laws disown,
Shall meet with due returns from thee,
And reap the fruit which they have sown.
