(RECAP)

PREFACE.

THE text of this edition is the result of a careful collation of Fisher's and Roberts's quartos (see p. 11) and the folio of 1623 with the leading modern editions. For the readings of the quartos I have depended mainly on the Cambridge edition; though, by the courtesy of Mr. J. Winsor, of the Boston Public Library, I have had the privilege of referring in doubtful cases to original copies of the quartos in the Barton collection. For the folio I have used Staunton's photolithographic fac-simile and Booth's reprint.

Many of the notes are original; the others, as a rule, are credited to the sources from which they were drawn. The frequent references to Halliwell are to his magnificent folio edition, for the loan of which I am indebted to my. friend, Dr. J. R. Nichols, of Haverhill, Mass. The references to Dyce are to his second edition, and the same is true of Collier and Knight.

In referring to other plays of Shakespeare, the numbering of the lines in the Globe edition has been given. In the case of illustrative passages taken from Schmidt's Lexicon, I have been careful to verify the figures, as there are occasional misprints in that invaluable work.

I cannot refrain from adding a testimonial to the accuracy and fidelity of the proof-readers at the Harpers'. If any errors of the type have eluded both their vigilance and my own, I shall be very grateful to any one who will send me a memorandum of them.
