protection of Kings and States professing Thy holy and eternal Truth, from the conspiracies and malicious practices of the enemies thereof: We yield Thee unfeigned thanks and praises for the wonderful and mighty deliverance of our Sovereign

King James the First, the Queen, the Prince, and the Royal Branches, with other Estates of the Realm, then assembled in Parliament, by Popish treachery appointed unto death. From this unnatural conspiracy, not our merit, but Thy mercy, not our foresight but Thy Providence delivered us. And therefore, not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto Thy Name be ascribed all honour and glory, in all Churches of the saints from generation to generation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ACCEPT also, most gracious God, of our unfeigned thanks for filling our hearts again with joy and gladness, after the time when Thou hadst afflicted us, and putting a new song into our mouths, by bringing William, Prince of Orange, upon this day, for the deliverance of our Church and Nation from Popish tyranny and arbitrary power. We adore the wisdom and justice of Thy Providence, which so timely interposed in our extreme danger, and disappointed all the designs of our enemies. We beseech Thee, give us such a lively and lasting sense of what Thou didst then, and hast since that time done for us, that we may not grow secure and

for the sake of our blessed Lord
and Saviour. Amen.

In the end of the Litany (if it be
read on this day), immediately before
the Collect (We humbly beseech
Thee, O Father), shall this be said
which followeth :

ALMIGHTY God and Heavenly
Father, we most humbly
praise and magnify Thy most
glorious Name for Thy unspeak-
able goodness toward us, expressed
in both the acts of Thy mercy
which we this day commemorate.
We confess that it has been of
Thy mercy alone that we are not
consumed: for our sins have cried
to heaven against us, and our
iniquities justly call for vengeance
upon us. But Thou hast not
dealt with us after our sins, nor
rewarded us according to our
iniquities; nor given us over, as
we deserve, to be a prey to our
mercy

mies; but hast in

delivered us from their malice,
and preserved us from death and
destruction. Let the considera-
tion of this Thy repeated goodness,
O Lord, work in us true repent-
ance, that iniquity may not be
our ruin. And increase in us
more and more a lively faith and
love, fruitful in all holy obedience:
that Thou mayest still continue
Thy favour, with the light of Thy
Gospel, to us and our posterity
for evermore; and that for Thy
dear Son's sake, Jesus Christ,
our only Mediator and Advocate.
Amen.

¶ In the Communion Service, instead

of the Collect for the day shall this
which followeth be used:

ETERNAL God and our most

careless in our obedience, by pre mighty Protector, we Thy
suming upon Thy great and un-
deserved goodness; but that it
may lead us to repentance, and
move us to be the more diligent
and zealous in all the duties of
our Religion, which Thou hast in
a marvellous manner preserved
to us. Let truth and justice,
brotherly kindness and charity,
devotion and piety, concord and
unity, with all other virtues, so
flourish among us, that they may
be the stability of our times, and
make this Church a praise in the
earth. All which we humbly beg

unworthy servants do humbly
present ourselves before Thy
Divine Majesty, acknowledging
Thy power, wisdom, and goodness
in preserving the King, and the
Three Estates of the Realm of
England assembled in Parliament,
from the destruction this day in-
tended against them. Make us,
we beseech Thee, truly thankful
for this, and for all other Thy
great mercies toward us. We
bless Thee for sending to this
our country William, Prince

of Orange, and for making all opposition fall before him, till he became our King and Governor And we beseech Thee to protect and defend our present Sovereign Queen Victoria, and all the Royal Family, from all Popish treasons and conspiracies; preserve her in Thy faith, fear, and love; prosper her reign with long happiness here on earth, and crown her with everlasting glory hereafter; through Jesus Christ, our only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

For the Epistle. 2 Kings xi. 17.

Abetween the Lord and the king and the people, that they should be the Lord's people; be

tween the king also and the people. And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and brake it down; his altars and his images brake they in pieces thoroughly, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And Jehoiada the priest appointed officers over the house of the Lord. And he took the rulers over hun

dreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the Lord, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king's house. And he sat on the throne of the kings. And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was in quiet.

The Gospel. John xvi. 1. THESE things have I spoken

you that ye should not

be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues; yea, the cometh that whosoever

billeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you be cause they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come ye may remember that I told you of them.

After an appropriate Hymn there should follow a Sermon, and the Service shall then be concluded in the accustomed manner.

A FORM OF PRAYER

TO BE USED ON THE TWENTIETH OF JUNE.

BEING THE DAY OF HER MAJESTY'S ACCESSION

[blocks in formation]

Minister. Let her enemies have no advantage against her. Answer. Let not the wicked approach to hurt her.

Minister. Endue Thy Ministers with righteousness.

Answer. And make Thy chosen people joyful.

Minister. O Lord, save Thy people.

Answer. And bless Thine inheritance.

Minister. Be unto us, O Lord, a strong tower;

Answer. From the face of our enemies.

Minister. O Lord, hear our prayer;

Answer. And let our cry come unto Thee.

In the Communion Service, immediately before the reading of the Epistle, after the Collect of the Day, shall be used this Prayer for the Queen :

mit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the King, as supreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evil-doers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well-doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men as free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the King.

The Gospel. Matth. xxii. 16.

ND sent out unto Him

Atheir disciples with the

we

Herodians, saying, Master, know that Thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest Thou for any man: for Thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What

MOST gracious thinkest Thou?

set Thy Servant VICTORIA our Queen upon the Throne of her Ancestors, we most humbly beseech Thee to protect her on the same from all the dangers to which she may be exposed; Hide her from the gathering together of the froward, and from the insurrection of wicked doers; Do Thou weaken the hands, baffle the designs, and defeat the enterprises of all her enemies, that no secret conspiracies, nor open violences, may disquiet her Reign; but that, being safely kept under the shadow of Thy wing, and supported by Thy power, she may triumph over all opposition; that so the world may acknowledge Thee to be her defender and mighty deliverer

give tribute unto Cæsar, or not?
But Jesus perceived their wicked-
ness, and said, Why tempt ye
Me, ye hypocrites? shew Me the
tribute-money. And they brought
unto Him a penny. And He saith
unto them, Whose is this image
and superscription? They say
unto Him, Cæsar's. Then saith He
unto them, Render therefore unto
Cæsar the
Caesar the things which are
Caesar's; and unto God the things
that are God's. When they had
heard these words, they marvelled,
and left Him, and went their
way.

In the Offertory shall this Sentence be read:

in all difficulties and adversities; L

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle. 1 Pet. ii. 11.

DE

EARLY beloved, I beseechyou as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which

war against the soul; having your

conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evil-doers, they may, by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. Sub

ET your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matth. v. 16.

Immediately before the Blessing this
Collect may be used:

G Thee, that the course of this

RANT, O Lord, we beseech

world may be so peaceably ordered by Thy governance, that Thy Church may joyfully serve Thee in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BE USED AT SEA

IN HER MAJESTY'S NAVY, AND IN ALL OTHER VESSELS.

The Morning and Evening Service to be used daily at Sea may be the same which is appointed in this Book.

These three following Prayers may also be used every day. ETERNAL Lord God, Who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea; Who hast compassed the waters with bounds until day and night come to an end; Be pleased to receive into Thy Almighty and most gracious protection the persons of us Thy servants and the ship in which we sail (or, the Fleet in which we serve). Preserve us from the dangers of the sea, and from the violence of the enemy; that we may be a safeguard unto our Sovereign Lady Queen Victoria, and her Dominions, and a security for such as pass on the seas upon their lawful occasions : that the inhabitants of our Islands may in peace and quietness serve Thee our God, and that we may reach our destination in safety to enjoy the blessings of the land, with the fruits of our labours, and with a thankful remembrance of Thy mercies to praise and glorify Thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer on behalf of those employed in Lighthouses and in Lightships. LORD our God, we commend to Thy Fatherly goodness the persons of those engaged in Lighthouses and in Lightships: Be Thou a lamp to their feet, and a light unto their path; and in the solitude of their life and their deprivation of the privilege of worshipping in the congregation, be Thou to them as a little sanc

tuary; through Jesus Christ our

Saviour. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

our works begun, continued and
ended in Thee, we may glorify
Thy holy Name, and finally, by
mercy,
Thy mercy, obtain everlasting life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Prayer to be used in Storms a' Sea.

MOST glorious and gracious Lord God, Who dwellest in heaven, but beholdest all things below: Look down, we beseech Thee, and hear us, calling out of the depth of misery, and out of the jaws of this death, which is ready now to swallow us up: Save, Lord, or else we perish. O send Thy word of command to rebuke the raging winds, and the roaring sea; that we, being delivered from this distress, may live to serve Thee, and to glorify Thy Name all the days of our life. Hear, Lord, and save us, for the infinite merits of our blessed Saviour, Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Prayer to be said before a Fight at Sea against any Enemy.

MOST powerful and glorious Lord God, the Lord of hosts, Who rulest and commandest all

things; Stir up Thy strength, o Lord, and come and help us; for Thou givest not alway the battle to the strong, but canst save by many or by few. O let not our sins now cry against us for vengeance; but hear us Thy poor servants begging mercy, and imploring Thy help, and that Thou wouldest be a defence unto us against the face of the enemy. Make it appear that Thou art our Saviour and mighty Deliverer; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Short Prayers for those that cannot meet to join in Prayer with others, by reason of the Fight, or Storm.

[blocks in formation]

Shert Prayers in respect of a storm. HOU, O Lord, that stillest the raging of the sea, hear, hear us, and save us, that we perish not.

When there shall be imminent danger, as many as can be spared from necessary service in the Ship shall be called together, and make an humble Confession of their sin to God: In which every one ought seriously to reflect upon those particular sins of which his conscience shall accuse him; saying as followeth :

A

The Confession.

LMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness,

Which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against Thy Divine Majesty, Provoking most justly Thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For Thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please Thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of Thy Name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O blessed Saviour, that didst
save Thy disciples ready to perish¶
in a storm, hear us, and save us,
we beseech Thee.

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
O Lord, hear us.

O Christ, hear us.

God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost, have mercy upon us, save us now and evermore. Amen.

UR Father, Whoart in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil : For Thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

Then shall the Minister or other person conducting the Service say : Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all that truly turn to Him.

1OME unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,

and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light. Matt. xi. 28-30.

God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him, should not perish, but have eternal life. John iii. 16.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful. John xiv. 27.
