THE MOST II, LUSTRIOUS ORDER OF

S.T. PATRIC K.

Tur Most Illustrious order of St. Patrick was instituted by king George III., Feb. 5, 1743, during the Vice-Royalty of George-Grenville-Nugent Temple, 1st Marquess of Buckingham, K.G. To consist of the overeign, a grand master, a prince of the blood royal, and thirteen knights, making in the whole sixteen, and seven officers. The lordlieutenant for the time being is the grand master; in 1833, by statute, the number of knights was increased to twenty-two.

The star is a cross saltire of red on a field arrent, surmounted with a trefoil proper, charged with three imperial crowns of gold, within a circle of gold, with the motto,-Qtors ** ran Antro M. to . .txxxot-to" who shall separate '"); the whole surmounted with eight rays of silver ; this is embroidered on the left side of the coat or cloak. The collar is of pure gold, composed of six harps and five roses, alternately joined together by twelve knots. In the centre before is a crown, to which is pendent the badge or jewel of the Order, of gold, enamelled, similar to the star, with the exception of the rays.
