GEORGE CAPEL-CONINGSBY, EARL of ESSEX, Viscount Malden, and Baron Capel, of Hadham, High Steward and late Recorder of Leominster, F.S.A.; born 14 Nov. 1757; succeeded his father, Anne-Holles, the late earl, 5 March 1799; assumed the surname of Coningsby in memory of his grandmother, to whose estates he succeeded; married, 6 June 1786, Sarah, da. of Henry Bazett, esq., of St. Helena, and widow of Edward Stephenson, esq., by whom (who d. 16 Jan. 1838) his lordship had no issue.

SIR WILLIAM CAPEL was lord mayor of London, 1503, and his descendants settled in Essex. His great-grandson, sir Henry, m. Catherine, da. of Thomas Manners, earl of Rutland, and by her was father of sir Arthur, father of sir Henry, father of

ARTHUR, 1st earl of Essex, was, 20 April 1661, created viscount Malden and earl of Essex. He was, in 1672, appointed lordlieut. of Ireland; recalled in 1677, and was accused, among many others, of the fanatic plot, and was sent prisoner to the Tower, where, 13 July 1683, he was found with his throat cut, but not without strong suspicion of his having been murdered. He m. Elizabeth, da. of Algernon Percy, 10th earl of Northumberland, and by her (who d. 1718) had six sons and two das., whereof only one son and one da. lived to maturity, viz.

JAMES-THOMAS BRUDENELL, EARL of CARDIGAN, Baron Brudenell, of Stanton Wyvill, co. Leicester, and a Baronet, lieut.-col. 11th dragoons; born 16 Oct. 1797, succeeded his father, Robert, late earl, 14 Aug. 1837; married, 19 June 1826, Elizabeth-Jane-Henrietta, eldest da. of admiral and lady Elizabeth Tollemache.

SIR ROBERT BRUDENELL, descended from an ancient family seated in the counties of Oxford and Bucks, was chief justice of the Common Pleas in the reign of Henry VIII. His great-grandson,

THOMAS, 1st earl, was created a bart. 1611, baron Brudenell, of Stanton Wyvill, co. Leicester, 26 April 1627, and earl of Cardigan, 20 April 1661, d. 1664, and was succeeded by his son,

ROBERT, 2d earl, who d. 16 July 1703, and (his only son, Francis, having d. in his lifetime) was succeeded by his grandson,

Elizabeth, duchess of Buccleuch. By his wife, above mentioned, (who d. 1 May 1775,) he had issue,

LORD WILLIAM HOWARD, (3d son of Thomas, 4th duke of Norfolk, by his 2d wife, Margaret, sole heiress of Thomas, lord Audley, of Walden,) is the ancestor of this branch of the noble family of Howard; lord William m. Elizabeth, sister and co-h. of George, lord Dacre, of Gillesland, whose elder sister, Anne, was wife of lord William's elder brother, Philip, earl of Arundel. In the division of the inheritance of the Dacres, the earl of Arundel obtained the eastle of Greystock, in Dacreland, and lord William became possessed of Gillesland and the castle of Naworth, which were originally granted temp. Henry III. to Herbert de Vallibus, or Vaux, and which passed to the family of Multon temp. Edward I., by the marriage of Maud, only da. and h. of another Herbert de Vaux, with Thomas de Multon; and from the Multons to the Dacres, temp. Edward III., by the marriage of Margaret, only da. and h. of Thomas de Multon, (grandson of Thomas above named,) with Ralph de Dacre, from whom George, lord Dacre, of Gillesland, above mentioned, was 8th in descent. Lord William also became possessed of the castle of Henderskelf, in Yorkshire, the site of Castle Howard, the present residence of the earl of Carlisle. Lord William d. 1640, having had issue 5 sons and 3 das.; of the sons, Philip, the eldest, was father of sir William, father of Charles, 1st earl of Carlisle; and sir Francis, the 2d son, who d. 1659, by Mary, da. of sir Henry Widdrington, his 2d wife, was ancestor of the Howards of Corby Castle, co. Cumberland.

CHARLES, the 1st earl, was, 20 April 1661, created baron Dacre, of Gillesland, viscount Howard, of Morpeth, and earl of Carlisle, m. Anne, da. of Edward, lord Howard, of Escrick, and by her had,
