Sir HENEAGE Finch, only brother, who left issue, of the 1st earl of Winchilsea, was recorder of London, and speaker of the house of commons, in the reign of Charles I. By his 1st wife, Frances, da. of sir Edmund Bell, of Beaupre Hall, co. Norfolk, he had

a son,

HENEAGE, of Raunston, Bucks, who was created a baronet, on the restoration of Charles II., 7 June 1660, and was successively solicitor and attorney-general, and lord chancellor; created, 10 Jan. 1673, baron Finch, of Daventry, co. Northampton, and, 12 May 1681, earl of Nottingham; m. Elizabeth, da. of Daniel Harvey, of London, and had issue, 9 sons and 3 das.; of the sons, DANIEL, the eldest, succeeded his father; and Heneage the 2d, was created earl of Aylesford. (See that tile.) He d. 28 Dec. 1682.

DANIEL FINCH, 2d earl of Nottingham, succeeded, as before mentioned, to the titles of earl of Winchilsea, viscount_ Maidstone, &c., on the death of John, 5th earl. He m., 1st, Essex Rich, 2d da. and co-h. of Robert, 3d earl of Warwick, by whom (who d. 1684) he had an only da.,

1. MARY, m., 1st, William Saville, marquess of Halifax; and, 2dly, John, 1st duke of Roxburgh.

By his 2d wife, Anne, only da. of Christopher, viscount Hatton, (by Cecilia, his 1st wife, da. of John, 2d earl of Thanet,) who d. 26 Sept. 1734, he had,

GEORGE STANHOPE, EARL of CHESTERFIELD, and Baron Stanhope, of Shelford, P.C.; born 23 May 1805; succeeded his father, Philip, the late earl, 29 Aug. 1815, a Lord of the Bedchamber to King George IV., and late Master of the Stag-hounds; married, Nov. 1830, the hon. Anne Elizabeth Forester, eldest da. of Cecil, 1st lord Forester, and has issue, 1. GEORGE-PHILIP-CECIL-ARTHUR, lord Stanhope, b. 6 Sept. 1831;--2. EVELYN, b. 3 Oct. 1834.

SIR JOHN STANHOPE, knt., common ancestor of the earls of Chesterfield, Stanhope, and Harrington, was descended from an ancient and knightly family of that name, settled in the counties of Nottingham and Derby, as early as the reign of Henry III. His great-grandfather was knighted at the battle of Blackheath, 1497, and d. 1511, leaving issue, Anne, who m. the protector Somerset; and sir Michael, who was involved in that duke's misfortunes, and beheaded 1551. Sir Michael's 3d son, sir John, was created lord Stanhope, of Harrington, 1605, and left an only son, Charles, 2d baron, on whose death s.p. in 1647, that title became extinct; and his eldest son, sir Thomas, was father of the sir John first mentioned. This sir John, by his 1st wife, Cordelia, da. and co-h. of Richard Alington, of Horseheath, co. Cambridge, esq., was father of PHILIP, 1st earl of Chesterfield; and by his 2d wife, Dorothy, da. of Thomas Trentham, he had issue, besides other children, sir John, ancestor of the earls of Harrington. PHILIP, 1st earl of Chesterfield, was created baron Stanhope, of Shelford, co. Notts, 7 Nov. 1616, and advanced to the earldom 4 Aug. 1628; m., 1st, Catherine, da. of Francis, lord Hastings, eldest son of George, 4th earl of Huntingdon, by whom he had 11 sons, of whom 5 d. infants; two were slain in the civil wars, and only two left issue, viz.

1. HENRY, m. Catherine, da and co-h. of Thomas, lord Wotton, and d. in his father's lifetime, leaving issue by her (who was created by king Charles II. countess of Chesterfield for life; re-m., 1st, to John Vanden Kirckhoven, alias Poliander, lord of Heenvliett, in Holland; and, 2dly, to Daniel O'Neale, esq., and d. 1677) an only son, PHILIP, 2d earl.

On the death of this earl, the barony of Clifford, being a barony in fee, fell into abeyance between the above-mentioned five ladies; which abeyance king George II. ter

minated in 1734, in favour of the countess of Leicester, 3d da. and co-h.; and on her death, s.p. in 1775, his Majesty George III. terminated it in favour of Edward Southwell, esq., grandson and h. of lady Sondes, the eldest da. and co-h. (See title Clifford.) The titles of earl of Thanet and baron Tufton devolved on his nephew,

JOHN-WILLIAM MONTAGU, EARL of SANDWICH, Viscount Hinchinbrook, and Baron Montague, of St. Neot's, High Steward of

Huntingdon; born 8 Nov. 1811; succeeded his father, George-John, the

late earl, 21 May 1818.

THIS family derives its descent from the same common ancestor as the late duke of MONTAGU, and the earl of HALIFAX, and the present duke of MANCHESTER. Sir SIDNEY MONTAGU, (7th son of sir Edward Montagu, and youngest brother of Henry, 1st earl of Manchester) was elected M.P. for the co. Huntingdon, 1640, but was expelled the house of commons, 3 Sept. 1642, for refusing to take an oath which the house had framed for their members"That they would live and die with their general, the earl of Essex." He d. 25 Sept. 1644, having m. Paulina, da. of John Pepys, esq., and had issue,

EDWARD MONTAGUE, 1st earl of Sandwich, K.G., who obtained the sole command of the English navy, and had the address as well as the honour of bringing the whole fleet to submit to king Charles II., who, in consideration of that important service, was pleased to create him baron Montagu, viscount Hinchinbrook, and earl of Sandwich; he was lord-high-admiral of England, and was killed in the great seabattle against the Dutch, off Southwold Bay, 28 May 1672; m. Jemima, da. of John, lord Crewe, of Stene, and had, besides other issue,
