ADAM DE ALDITHLEY, or Audeley, lord of Stanlegh, co. Chester, and of Bagenhault, co. Stafford, in the reign of king Henry I., had two sons; 1. Liulph, ancestor of the lords Audeley, of Heleigh; and 2. Adam, whose son William obtained the lordship of Stanlegh, in exchange for other lands from his cousin Adam de Audeley, and assumed the surname of Stanley. Sixth in descent from William, was sir JOHN Stanley, K.G., who obtained a grant in fee of the Isle of Man, 1406, and was appointed lord-lieut. of Ireland, 1413. His grandson, sir Thomas Stanley, K.G., and lord-lieut. of Ireland, was father of

But the carldom devolved on his brother, WILLIAM, 6th earl, who purchased of his nieces their claims to the Isle of Man; he d. 1642, and was succeeded by his son,

JAMES, 7th earl, K.G.; who was summoned to parliament in his father's lifetime, 1628, as baron Strange, by which summons a new barony of Strange was created, which is now inherited by the duke of Athol. This earl was celebrated for his loyalty to kings Charles I. and II., and being taken prisoner at the battle of Worcester, was (notwithstanding his plea that he had quarter for his life given him by Captain Edge, who took him prisoner) beheaded at Bolton, 15 Oct. 1651. He m. Charlotte, da. of Claude de la Tremouille, duke de Thouars, and had issue, besides other children,

CHARLES, 8th earl, d. 1672, and was succeeded by his elder son,

WILLIAM-GEORGE-RICHARD, 9th earl, who d. without issue male 5 Nov. 1702, and was succeeded by his brother, JAMES, 10th earl, who d. s.p. 1735, on which event the issue male of Thomas, the 2d earl, became extinct. The barony of Strange, created by the writ of summons of 1628, devolved on the issue of his aunt, the marchioness of Athol, and the earldom of Derby on sir Edward Stanley, bart., whose descent we now proceed to trace.

Sir James Stanley, of Crosshall, co. Lancaster, 3d, but 2d surviving son of George, lord Strange, son of the 1st earl, left issue 2 sons; 1. sir George, knt., marshal of Ireland, who left 2 sons, Edward and Henry, who both d. s.p.; and 2. FRANCIS-THEOPHII US-HENRY HASTINGS, EARL of HUNTINGDON, born 31 July 1808; succeeded his father, HANS-FRANCIS, late earl, 9 Dec. 1828; married, 8 Sept. 1835, Elizabeth-Anne, only surviving da. and heir of Richard Power, of Clashmore, co. Waterford, esq.

THE family of Hastings is descended from Robert de Hastings, who was portreeve of the Cinque Port of that name in the reign of Henry I. An elder branch of it were lords of Abergavenny, and earls of Pembroke, and became extinct in 1390; from a younger brother descended WILLIAM de Hastings, who was summoned to parliament among the barons of the realm, 1461, and afterwards executed by king Richard III. His grandson, GEORGE, lord Hast

ings, was created, 1529, earl of Huntingdon, and from him the titles descended through a series of 8 earls to FRANCIS, 10th earl, on whose death, without issue, 2 Oct. 1789, the barony devolved on his only sister, Elizabeth, countess of Moira, and on her death descended to her son, the late marquess of Hastings, while the earldom remained dormant, and was even considered as extinct, till, after a lapse of 30 years, it was successfully claimed by the

late earl, whose descent we now proceed to state.

GEORGE, 4th earl of Huntingdon, had a younger son, Henry, who was seated at Woodlands, co. Hants, and a younger brother, sir EDWARD, of Humberstone, co. Leicester; the male issue of Henry, though very numerous at the latter end of the 17th century, became shortly after totally extinct, and thus left the succession to the earldom open to the representative of sir Edward.

This sir EDWARD m. Barbara, da. and co-h. of sir William Devereux, younger son of Walter, viscount Hereford, (and widow of Edward Cave, of Ingarsby,) by whom he had issue a son and h.,

THIS noble family derives its descent from Pharamond, founder of the French monarchy, being descended from Louis VI., king of France, surnamed Le Gros, and is presumed to be of the blood royal. Reginald de Courtenay, in the reign of Henry II., m. Hawise, da. and sole h. of Robert de Abrincis, baron of Oakhampton, co. Devon. Robert, his son, baron of Oakhampton, d. 1242; he m. Mary, youngest da. of William de Redvers, earl of Devon; his son, John,

the 3d baron, d. 1273, and was succeeded by his son Hugh, 4th baron, who d. 1291, leaving Hugh, who became heir to Isabella de Fortibus, countess of Devon and Albemarle, was admitted earl of Devon, and d. 1349. Of this family there have been 15 barons of Oakhampton, 12 earls of Devonshire, and 2 marquesses of Exeter.
