THE family of VANNECK are on record in Holland for many centuries. In the second voyage made by the Dutch to the East Indies 1568, admiral James Cornelius Vanneck was their naval commander.

THE right hon. ROBERT CUNINGHAME, general in the army, colonel 5th dragoons, m. Elizabeth, 2d da. and co-h. of John Murray, esq., M.P. co. Henry Westenra, esq., by whom she was mother of the present baron Rossmore. General Cuninghame was created, 19 Oct. 1796, baron Rossmore, with remainder, on failure of issue male of his body, to Henry-Alexander Jones, esq., son of the above-named Anne Jones, Warner Westenra, William Westenra, and Henry Westenra, esqs., sons of the above-named Harriet Westenra, and their issue male successively. Lord Rossmore d. without issue, 6 Aug. 1801, and (Henry-Alexander Jones, esq., having d. unm. in his lordship's lifetime) was succeeded, pursuant to the limitations of the patent, by the present lord, whose paternal descent we now proceed to trace.

The family of WESTENRA is very ancient in Holland. They bear the augmentation of the sea-horse in their coat armour, in allusion to the gallantry of an ancestor who, during the duke of Alva's campaigns, was actively employed against the enemy, and undertook to swim across an arm of the sea, with important intelligence to his besieged countrymen.

His lordship's ancestor, WARNER WESTENRA, esq., settled in Ireland, temp. Charles II., and was made a free denizen, 1662, by act of parliament, together with his brother, Derrick Westenra, esq., (who left issue, 1. Peter, of Athurdee, co. Louth, elected to parliament for Athboy, 1692, m., 1682, Sarah, 3d da. of John Bligh, esq., grandfather of John, 1st earl of Darnley, and d. without issue, 1693; 2. Jane, m. William Pearse, esq.; 3. Isabella, m. Roger Warren, esq.;) he made his will 23 July 1668, proved at Dublin, 1 Feb. 1776, leaving his estate in Ireland, in failure of his own issue, to the eldest son of his brother, Henricus Westenra, on condition of his being sent to Ireland and naturalized; he m. Elizabeth Wybrantz, and d.1676, leaving issue an only son, HENRY, and Elizabeth, m. Simon Digby, lord bishop of Elphin, and son of Essex

Digby, lord bishop of Dromore, and nephew of Robert, 1st lord Digby, of Geashill, and d. 15 April 1720.

HENRY WESTENRA, esq., succeeded his father, 1676, and also to the estates of his first cousin, Peter Westenra, esq., M.P. for Athboy, who d. without issue, 160. He was attainted, 1680, by James 11., but restored on the accession of William and Mary: m., 12 March 1700, Eleanor, 2d da. of sir Joshua Allen, knt., and sister of John, 1st viscount Allen, and d. 1719, leaving issue,

BEAUMONT HOTHAM, BARON HOTHAM, of South Dalton, and a Baronet of England; Lieutenant-Colonel in the Army, M.P. for Leominster; born 9 Aug. 1794; succeeded his grandfather, Beaumont, the late lord, 4 March 1814.

Sir JOHN HOTHAM, descended from an ancient family of that name, seated at Scarborough, co. York, was created a baronet,

4 Jan. 1621. He was appointed governor of Hull in 1643; but having been discovered to hold a correspondence with the royal

party, he was tried and convicted by a courtmartial for that and other offences against the parliament, and was beheaded on Tower Hill, together with his eldest son, sir John Hotham, knt. "He was master," says lord Clarendon, "of a noble fortune in land, and rich in money, of a very ancient family, and well allied." From his 2d son, the rev. Charles Hotham, descended

WILLIAM, 1st lord Hotham, admiral R.N. 3d son of sir Beaumont, 7th bart., entered early into the naval service, and for his distinguished conduct was created, 7 March 1797, baron Hotham, of South Dalton, with remainder (in default of issue male) to the heirs male of his father, sir Beaumont Hotham, bart. His lordship succeeded, July 1811, to the English baronetcy of Hotham, on the death of sir Charles, the 10th bart. His lordship d. unm. 2 May 1813, and was succeeded, agreeably to the limitation of his patent, by his brother,

His lordship's ancestor, THOMAS DAWSON, of Armagh, temp. queen Elizabeth, was descended from the Dawsons of Spaldington, co. York; his grandson, JoHN DAWSON, esq., m. into the family of Henry Usher, archbishop of Armagh, primate of Ireland, from whom a considerable estate, cos. Armagh and Tyrone, descended to this family; he was father of

WALTER DAWSON, of Armagh, esq., d. 1704, leaving issue, WALTER, ancestor of baron Cremorne; and Thomas, ancestor of Thomas-Townley Dawson, esq., whose only da. and sole heiress, Catherine-Maria, m., 4 June 1798, Charles-William Bury, earl of Charleville.

WALTER DAWSON, eldest son, m. Frances, da. of Richard Dawson, esq., by which marriage the estate of Dawson's Grove, co. Monaghan, was conveyed to this family, and d. 1718, leaving issue by her, (who d. 9 July 1725,)

RICHARD DAWSON, of Ardee, co. Louth, esq., 5th son of Richard, father of the first viscount, m., 22 Aug. 1758, Anne, 2d da. of sir Edward O'Bryen, of Dromoland, co. Clare, bart., (grand-nephew of Anne Hyde, duchess of York, mother of queens Mary and Anne,) and was assassinated in March 1782, near his house at Ardee; he left issue,
