HENRY-MANNERS CAVENDISH, BARON WATERPARK, of Waterpark, co. Cork; and a Baronet of England, colonel of the Derbyshire militia; born 8 Nov. 1793; succeeded his father, Richard, late lord, 1 June 1830, married, 18 July 1837, Elizabeth-Jane, da. of Thomas, 1st viscount Anson, and sister of Thomas-William, earl of Lichfield.

THIS noble family is descended from a branch of the house of Cavendish, from which proceeded the dukes of Devonshire, and was seated at Doveridge, co. Derby, temp. Elizabeth.

Sir HENRY CAVENDISH, the 1st bart., b. 15 April 1707, eldest son of William Cavendish, esq., of Doveridge Hall, (by Mary, da. of sir Timothy Tyrrel, of Shotover, co. Oxford,) was appointed teller of the exchequer in Ireland, by his relation, William, 3d duke of Devonshire, lord-lieut. of Ireland, 1737; and was created an English bart., 7 May 1755; he m., 1730, Anne, da. and co-h. of Henry Pyne, of Water

park, co. Cork, esq., (by Anne, sister of sir Richard Edgcumbe, ancestor of the earls of Mount Edgcumbe,) son of sir Richard Pyne, of Waterpark, lord-chief-justice of Ireland, by Lucy, da. of the duke of Montagu, and had issue,

THOMAS GRAVES, 1st lord Graves, entered very early into the R.N., and from the year 1740, rendered himself eminently conspicuous, particularly by his gallant conduct as commander-in-chief of the British van, at the glorious and decisive victory of admiral earl Howe, K.G., over the French fleet, on the ever-memorable 1st of June 1794, when he was dangerously wounded in the right arm. For these, and a series of other highly distinguished services, he was, in July the same year, created

lord Graves, baron of Gravesend, co. Londonderry, in Ireland. His lordship m., in 1771, Elizabeth, one of the das. and co-hh. of William-Peere Williams, esq., of Cadleigh, co. Devon, and 1st cousin to the countess of Guildford, by whom he had issue,

His lordship's great uncle, sir ALEXANDER HOOD, 1st viscount and baron Bridport, K.B., was younger brother of Samuel, 1st viscount Hood. He was bred from an early age to the naval profession, appointed post capt. 10 June 1756; displayed great courage while he commanded the Minerva, of 32 guns: romoted to a flag 1780; served as rear-admiral under lord Howe, at the relief of Gibraltar, 1782, invested with the military order of the Bath, 1788, advanced to the dignity of baron Bridport, of Cricket St. Thomas, in Ireland, 12 Aug. 1794, for his gallantry as second in command on the ever-memorable 1st of June, 1794; in 1795 his lordship gained a signal victory over the French fleet. For these gallant services he was created a peer of Great Britain, 13 June 1796, by the title of baron Bridport, of Cricket St. Thomas, co. Somerset; and, 10 June 1801, advanced to the further dignity of viscount Bridport, being then admiral of the red, vice-admiral of Great Britain, and gen. of royal marines. The viscount m., Ist, Maria, da. of Richard West, D.D., prebendary of Durham, (by Maria, sister of Richard Temple, viscount Cobham,) but had no issue by her (who d. 12 Sept. 1786); m., 2dly, 26 June 1788, Mary-Sophia, da. and sole h. of Thomas Bray, of Edmonton, co.
