GAMEL-AUGUSTUS PENNINGTON, BARON MUNCASTER, and

a Baronet of Great Britian; born 3 Dec. 1831; succeeded his father, Lowther, the late lord, 30 April 1838.

GAMEL DE PENNINGTON was seated at Muncaster, co. Cumberland, at the Norman Conquest.

Sir JOHN DE PENNINGTON, knt., was steadily attached to the unfortunate Henry VI., and gave him a secret reception at Muncaster in his flight from his enemies. In return, the king gave him a curiously wrought glass cup with this blessing to the family, that they should ever prosper, and never want a male heir so long as they

should preserve it unbroken, which the superstition of those times imagined to carry good fortune, and called it the luck of Muncaster; and of this glass the family are still possessed. This sir John de Pennington commanded the left wing of the English army in an expedition into Scotland; his grandson, sir John de Pennington, had a command at the battle of Flodden Field, 4 Henry VIII.

Sir HUGH DE LAWLESS, of Hoddesdon, co. Herts, settled in Ireland temp. Henry .II., and obtained a grant from the crown of the manor of Shangenagh, co. Dublin, where he erected a castle, the ruins of which are still visible. RICHARD LAWLESS was provost of Dublin 1311, and held the office of chief magistrate for three successive years. STEPHEN LAWLESS was consecrated bishop of Limerick 1354, and d. on Innocents' day, 1359.
