JOHN EVANS-FREKE, BARON CARBERY, of Carbery, co. Cork, and a Baronet of Ireland, one of the Representative Peers for Ireland born 11 Nov. 1765; succeeded his cousin, John, the late lord, 4 March 1807; married, 25 Jan. 1783, Catharine-Charlotte, 3d da. of ArthurSaunders, 2d earl of Arran, by Catharine, only da. of William Annesley, viscount Glerawley, by whom he has no issue.

THIS noble family was originally seated in Caermarthenshire, in the principality of Wales, from whence they removed in the reign of James I. to Ireland.

JOHN EVANS, the first of the family that came over, settled at Limerick, where he was living in 1628. He left issue,

1. GEORGE, of Ballyphilip, co. Cork, afterwards of Ballygrennane Castle, co. Limerick.

And was grandfather of Nathaniel Evans, bishop of Meath.

GEORGE EVANS, esq., (the elder son,) served in the army raised to suppress the rebellion of 1641, which being ended, he settled at Ballygrennane Castle, in the co. of Limerick, where, and in the co. of Cork, he acquired a considerable estate by a grant of lands under the acts of settlement, and by several purchases. He m. Anne, da. of Thomas Bowerman, of Coolinah, co. Cork, esq., and had issue,

1. Right hon. GEORGE (his successor).

2. JOHN, of Miltown Castle, co. Cork, was bred at Gray's Inn to the profession of the law, but at the Revolution he quitted his studies for a military life; and became afterwards a commander in the navy, in which service he d. in 1723, s.p.

3. ANNE, m. Christopher Rye, of Rye Court, co. Cork, esq.

GEORGE EVANS, esq., d. in 1707, and was succeeded in estate by his eldest son,

Right Hon. GEORGE EVANS, of Caherass, co. Limerick; he also was bred to the profession of the law, but following the example of his father and brother, he became very active in promoting the revolution of 1688. After the reduction of Ireland by king William, he was returned to parliament for Charleville, in the co. of Cork, called to the privy council, made custos rotulorum of the co. of Limerick, which co. he represented in parliament in 1695. On the accession of George I. to the throne, he was offered a peerage, but declined it, and it was then conferred on his son; m.,

MATTHEW WHITWORTH-AYLMER, LORD AYLMER, Baron of Balrath, co. Meath, and a Baronet of Ireland, G. C. B., a Lieut.-General in the Army, and col. 18th foot; late Governor of Lower Canada, and sometime Adjutant-General in Ireland; born 24 May 1775; succeeded his father, Henry, the late lord, 22 Oct. 1785; took the name and arms of Whitworth, in addition to Aylmer, by royal sign manual, 1825; married, 4 Aug. 1801, Louisa, 2d da. of sir John Call, of Whiteford, co. HENRY MAXWELL, BARON FARNHAM, of Farnham, co. Cavan ; born 9 Aug. 1799, succeeded his father, Henry, late baron, 19 Oct. 1838; married, 3 Dec. 1828, Anna-Frances-Hesther, da. of lord le Despencer, but has no issue.

THIS family is descended from a branch of the earls of Nithesdale. Sir HERBERT MAXWELL, was ancestor of Herbert, created, 1424, baron Maxwell, of Calaverock, whose descendant, Robert, lord Maxwell, was created, 1581, earl of Nithesdale. Sir John Maxwell, only brother of Herbert, was ancestor of a branch which settled in Ireland in the reign of queen Elizabeth.

JOHN MAXWELL was created, 1756, baron of Farnham, m., 8 June 1719, Judith, h. of James Barry, of Newton Barry, co. Wexford, esq., and had issue by her, (who d. 5 April 1771.)
