CORNELIUS O'CALLAGHAN, VISCOUNT LISMORE, and Baron Lismore, of Shanbally, co. Tipperary, P.C. for Ireland; born 2 Oct. 1772; succeeded his father, Cornelius, the late lord, 12 July 1797; advanced to the dignity of Viscount Lismore, 30 May 1806; married, 11 Aug. 1808, (but from whom he was divorced in 1827,) Eleanor Butler, da. of John Butler, earl of Ormonde and Ossory, and sister to James, marquess of Ormonde, and has,- -1. GEORGE, in the army.

THE family is descended from Ceallachan, or Callaghan, a prince of Munster, renowned for his exploits against the Danes. His descendants founded a monastery of Austin Friars at Clonmene, and the castle of Drumaneen, which was their chief seat. Smyth, in his history of Cork, (vol. i. p. 303,) says, "The castle of Drumaneen stands boldly on the black water; it was the chief seat of the O'Callaghans. About the time of James I., they erected a very stately house on the foundation of the castle, which was ruined in the late wars: the castle lawn is large, and well enclosed with a high stone wall, flanked with round towers; and the whole, though in ruins, from the opposite side of the river, by its lofty situation, has still an august appearance.' CORNELIUS O'Callaghan was lord and chieftain of Pople Callaghan, and seised of several large territories

in 1594, as appears by an inquisition taken by sir Thomas Norris, vice-president of Munster, 25 Oct. 1594. From him descended

CORNELIUS O'CALLAGHAN, representative for Fethard in the second parliament of queen Anne, and conspicuous for his great abilities at the bar; he m.
