JOHN BOURKE, EARL of MAYO, Viscount Mayo, of Monycrower, co. Mayo, Baron Naas, of Naas, co. Kildare, Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Hanoverian Guelphic Order, D.C.L., one of the Representative Peers for Ireland, and P.C. for Ireland; born 18 June 1766; succeeded his father, Joseph-Deane, the late earl, 20 Aug. 1794; married, 24 May 1792, Arabella, 4th da. of William-Mackworth Praed, of Bitton House, co. Devon, esq., first lady of the bedchamber to the queen dowager.

His lordship is descended from an elder branch of the Bourkes, viscounts Mayo, (which title, conferred 1627, has lain dormant since the death of John, 8th viscount, 12 Jan. 1767,) and from the same ancestor as the de Burghs or Bourkes, earls of Clanricarde, and of Ulster, which latter earldom was carried from the family by the marriage, 1352, of Elizabeth de Burgh, sole h. of William, earl of Ulster, (by Maude, 3d da. of Henry Plantagenet, earl of Lancaster, Leicester, and Derby, grandson of Henry III.,) with Lionel, of Antwerp, duke of Clarence, 3d son of Edward III.

JOHN BOURKE, 1st earl of Mayo, was created baron of Naas 1 Aug. 1776, viscount Mayo, of Monycrower, 13 Jan. 1781, and advanced to the dignity of earl of Mayo, 24 June 1785.
