FRANCIS, created vis count Shannon, which title became extinct on the death of his grandson and heir, Richard, 2d viscount. Robert Boyle, the celebrated philosopher, was also a son of the 1st earl of Cork.

ROGER, 3d son of the earl of Cork, was created, 28 Feb. 1628, lord Boyle, baron of Broghill, and, 5 Sept. 1660, earl of Orrery; m. Margaret, da. of Theophilus Howard, earl of Suffolk, and by her had issue,

MICHAEL-JAMES-ROBERT DILLON, EARL of ROSCOMMON, and Baron Kilkenny West, co. Westmeath, claimed the title on the decease of Patrick, 11th earl, as lineal descendant and heir male of Patrick Dillon, 7th son of the 1st earl; and after an investigation which lasted several

years, and in the course of which two counter claims were advanced, the House of Lords decided in his favour 19 June 1828; born 2 Oct. 1798; married, 19 Aug. 1830, Charlotte, da. of John Talbot, esq., and sister of the earl of Shrewsbury, and had a son, b. 12 Sept. 1831, d. same day.

THIS noble family is descended from HENRY DILLON, who obtained from king John, while earl of Mortaigne, a grant of a large tract of country in Ireland, afterwards distinguished by the appellation of Dillon's country.

GERALD DILLON, of Drumrany, chief of the family of Dillon, towards the end of the 14th century, left two sons, the elder of whom, Maurice, was ancestor of the viscounts Dillon (see that title); and the 2d, sir JAMES, was progenitor of the earls of Roscommon.

JAMES DILLON, 1st earl of Roscommon, was created, 24 Jan. 1619, lord Dillon, baron of Kilkenny West, and, 5 Aug. 1622, advanced to the dignity of earl of Roscommon, he m. Eleanor, da. of sir Christopher Barnewall, of Turvey, and had issue 7 sons, 1. ROBERT, 2d earl.

2. LUCAS, of Twomere, ancestor of the 9th, 10th, and 11th earls.

3. THOMAS; 4. CHRISTOPHER; 5. GEORGE; 6. JOHN, all d. s.p.

ROBERT, 9th earl, great-grandson of Lucas, 2d son of the 1st earl. He was a marshal in the French army, and dying 1770, was succeeded by his brother,

THE family of Plunkett is supposed (says Lodge) to be of Danish origin; the time of its settlement in Ireland cannot be decidedly ascertained, but it was certainly as early as the reign of Henry III. Plunkett, of Bewley, co. Louth, living 1322, had issue 2 sons; John, ancestor of the barons Louth; (see that title;) and Richard, of Rathregan, co. Meath, whose grandson, sir Christopher Plunkett, lived in the reigns of Henry VI. and Edward IV., and had issue, by Joan, his wife, only da. and h. of sir Lucas Cusac, lord of Killeen and Dunsany, 2 sons; JOHN, lord of Killeen, ancestor of the present earl; and Christopher, ancestor of the lords Dunsany (see that title).

LUCAS, 10th lord Killeen, (7th in descent from John above named,) was created, 26 Sept. 1628, earl of Fingall, and d. 29 March 1637, leaving, besides other issue, CHRISTOPHER, 2d earl; and George, grandfather of the 6th earl.

CHRISTOPHER, 2d earl, d. 1649, and was succeeded by his son, LUKE, 3d earl, father of PETER, 4th earl, who was outlawed 1691, (by the name of Luke,) for his attachment to king James II.; but his outlawry was taken off 1697, and he d. 1717, leaving an only son, JUSTIN, 5th earl, who dying without issue, 24 March 1734, the title devolved on his kinsman,

ROBERT, 6th earl, (grandson of GEORGE, younger son of the 1st earl,) m. Mary, da. of Robert Magenis, esq., and d. in Paris, 1758, leaving issue,

FREDERICK-JOHN-WILLIAM LAMBART, EARL of the County of CAVAN, Viscount Kilcoursie, in King's county, and Lord Lambart, Baron of Cavan; born 30 Dec. 1815; succeeded his grandfather, RichardFord-William, late earl, 21 Nov. 1837; a Cornet in the 7th Dragoon Guards.

OLIVER LAMBART (descended from an ancient family of that name settled in York. shire and Northumberland) was appointed governor of Connaught, 1601, and 17 Feb. 1617, created baron of Cavan. He d. 1618, leaving a son,

CHARLES, 2d lord, who, 1 April 1647, was created viscount Kilcourse and earl of Cavan, m. Jane, da. of Richard, lord Robartes, of Truro, and sister of the 1st ear! of Radnor, and had issue, RICHARD, 2d earl, who, by Rose, da. of sir James Ware, knt., had issue, CHARLES, 3d earl. He m. Castellina, sister of St. Leger Gilbert, esq., and had issue, RICHARD, 4th earl; and Henry, whose son, RICHARD, became 6th earl. RICHARD, 4th earl, m. Margaret, sister of sir Patrick Trant, and had issue, FORD, 5th earl, m., 24 March 1741, Elizabeth, da. of James Wale, esq., and had issue, 2 das.; Sophia, d.
