THIS illustrious family is descended from the ancient monarchs of Ireland, and so late as the time of Henry VIII. were kings of Thomond.

MURROUGH O'BRYEN, the last prince of Thomond, having submitted to king Henry VIII., was by that prince created earl of Thomond, with remainder to his nephew Donogh, son of his elder brother, and baron Inchiquin, to him and to the heirs male of his body. He d. 1551, when the earldom devolved on his nephew, (and became extinct on the death of Henry, the 8th earl, also viscount Tadcaster, in England, 1741,) and the barony descended to his son and heir, DERMOD, 2d baron.

MURROUGH, 6th baron, and great-greatgrandson of Dermod, was created, 21 Oct. 1654, earl of Inchiquin, m. Elizabeth, da. of sir William St. Leger, president of Munster; and dying 9 Sept. 1674, was succeeded by his son and heir,

WILLIAM, 2d earl, in 1674, was, by Charles II., made capt.-gen. of his majesty's forces in Africa, governor and vice-admiral of Tangier, and of the parts adjacent; he was appointed, by king William III., governor of Jamaica; m., 1st, Margaret, da. of Roger, earl of Orrery, and by her had WILLIAM, 3d earl; and 2dly, Elizabeth, youngest da. and co-h. of George, lord Chandos, and relict of Edward, lord Herbert, of Cherbury; but by her, whore-m. Charles, lord Howard, of Escrick, and d. Feb. 1717, he had no issue.

The earl d. in Jamaica, Jan. 1692, and was succeeded by his son,

The earl m., 2dly, 12 Oct. 1761, Mary, da. of Stephen Moore, viscount Mountcashel, and by her had no issue. Hed. 18 July 1777. and was succeeded by his nephew,

MURROUGH, 5th earl of Inchiquin, eldest son of James, 3d son of William, the 3d earl, who was, in 1800, created marquess of Thomond, and 2 Oct. 1801, baron Thomond, of Taplow, in the Peerage of England, K.P.; m., 1st, March 1753, his cousin, Mary O'Bryen, countess of Orkney in her own right, (only da. and h. of William, 4th earl of Inchiquin, by Anne Hamilton, countess of Orkney,) and by her (who d. 10 May 1790) had several children, who d. young;

THIS noble family was seated co. Sussex, prior to their settlement in Ireland. THоMAS TAYLOUR, of Ringmer, went over to Ireland with the celebrated dr. Chester, bart., and d. 8 Aug. 1736, leaving issue, sir THOMAS,

The earl d. without issue, 8 May 1783, when the titles of earl of Ely and viscount Loftus became extinct; but the estates devolved,
