eldest succeeded him in the earledom of Lenox; the second, whose name was Donald, and the third was named Gillchrist ; the then king of Scotts having warres, &c., among some that were then commanded to serve the king in those warres, was the earle of Lenox, who keeping his eldest sonne at home, sent his second sonne to serve for him; this hatteli went hard with the Scotts, who were forced to loose grounde, and at last to rutine away, which being perceived by Donald, he pulled his father's standard from the bearer thereof, and valiantly encountering the foe, being well fol lowed, repulsed the enemy, and changed the fortune of the day, whereby agreate victory was gott. After the battaile, the king sæð unto them: You have ali done raisantly, but there is one amongst you who hath NA PIER, -and calling Donald to his presence, in regarde of his worthy service, gave him in augmentation of honour to change his name from LENOX to Napier, and to give him the lands of Gosfoord, &c., and ma le him his servant, which discourse is confirmed by sundry of my old evidences, wherein we are called LENOX alvas NA.... PIER."

John Napier, "to whom," says Mr. Hume, the celebrated historian, " the title of Great Man, is more justly due than to any other whom his country ever produced," was the inventor of the Logarithms and Robdologice, commonly called "Napier's Bones." He was likewise author of a "Treatise on the Revelation of St. John." These works will remain lasting monuments of his sublime judgment, knowledge, and penetration. ARCHIBALD, 1st lord Napier, eldest son of John, was, for many years, gentleman of the privy chamber to king James VI., and was appointed by his son, king Charles I., an extraordinary lord of session 1626: created a baronet, 2 March, and then advanced to the title of lord Napier, to him and his heirs male, 4 May 1627. He m. Margaret Graham, da. of John, 4th earl of Montrose, and sister to the first marquess of Montrose, by whom he had issue,

This jord dying a bachelor 16253, was succeeded by his nephew, str THOMAS NICHOLSON, of Garnoch, only child of his eldest sister, who became 4th lord, and dying under age, and unm., 16, the title devolved on his aunt,

Crest-A dexter arm erect couped at the elbow, proper, the hand grasping a crescent, argent.

Supporters-Dexter, an eagle, wings inverted proper. Sinister, a man in complete armour holding in his left hand a tilting spear with a pennon, all proper.

These supporters are said by Scotch heralds to be placed on what they call a compartment, consisting of the battlements of a tower, from which issue six lances, 3 and 3 in saltire, being the crest of Scott of Thirlestane.

Motto-Ready, aye ready; being that of Scott of Thirlestane; and over the crest, "Sans tache," without stain.

THOMAS FAIRFAX, LORD FAIRFAX, of Cameron; succeeded his father, Bryan, the late lord, circa 1812; married, and has issue several SONS. His lordship resides in America.

SIR THOMAS FAIRFAX, of Denton, co. York, was created baron Fairfas, of Ca meron, in North Britain, 18 Oct. 1627, 2 Car. I.; he m. Helen Aske, and d. 1649, leaving issue, FERDINANDO, eldest son, and 2d lord, m., 1st, lady Mary Sheffield; and 2dly, Rhoda Chapman, d. 1647, leaving issue by the first wife, THOMAS, 3d lord, gen. of the parliamentary forces in the civil wars, who m. Anne, da. of Horatio, lord Vere, of Tilbury, and d. 1671, without issue male; Henry, of Oglethorpe, co. York, 2d son of the 1st lord, m. Mary, da. of sir Henry Cholmley, and d. in April 1665, leaving HENRY, 4th lord, who m. Frances, da. of sir Robert Barwick, of Tolston, co. York, and d. in 1688, leaving issue, THOMAS and Henry. THOMAS, the eldest, was 5th lord, m. Catherine, da. and h. of Thomas, lord Colepepper, and left issue, 3 sons; viz. THOMAS, eldest son and 6th lord, d. unm. in Virginia, 1781; Henry-Colepepper, 2d son, d. in the lifetime of his elder brother, 1734, without issue; ROBERT, 3d son, succeeded his eldest brother and was 7th lord; was twice m., but d. without issue, 15 July 1793, when the whole male issue of Thomas, lord Fairfax, the eldest son of Henry, lord Fairfax, became extinct. The title and dignity then vested in the rev. BRYAN FAIRFAX, by the following course of descent:-Henry Fairfax, his grandfather, was the 2d son of Henry, 4th lord, succeeded to his maternal grandfather's estate of Tolston; hem. Anne

Harrison, and on that occasion, levied a fine and suffered a recovery on the Tolston estate; he had issue, 1. Henry, b. 1643, d. without issue, 1730; 2. Thomas, d. without Issue: 3. Richard, d. an infant; 4. William, 6. in 1691, resided long in Virginia with his Cousin THOMAS, 6th lord, who possessed great property in that country, as the representative of the Colepepper family. Willam d. 1737, having m., 1st, Sarah Walker; and 2dly, Deborah Clarke, and left issue, George William, who succeeded as h. to his uncle Henry's estate of Tolston: m. Sarah Carey, and d. without issue, in 1787: Thomas was a midshipman, R.N., 1743, and was killed in battle, 26 June 1746; BRYAN, in holy orders, 3d son, and 8th lord, whose claim to this barony was admitted by the house of lords in May 1800, when his lordship returned to North America.

His lordship m. Elizabeth Carey, and had issue several sons, and dying in America about the year 1812, was succeeded by his eldest son,

ERIC MACKAY, LORD REAY, co. Caithness, and a Baronet of Nova Scotia; one of the Representative Peers for Scotland; born Dec. 1773; succeeded his cousin, Hugh, the late lord, 26 Jan. 1797.

DONALD MACKAY, of Far, (son of Hucheon, and grandson of Y Mackay,) was created a baronet of Nova Scotia, 18 March 1627, and advanced to the dignity of the peerage, by the title of lord Reay, by patent, 20 June 1628. His lordship had a warrant from king Charles I., 1625, and carried over to Germany a regiment of 1500 men of his own name and followers, to the assistance of the king of Bohemia; and afterwards entered into the service of the kings of Denmark and Sweden, where he served with great reputation. In the civil war he joined the royal party, was taken prisoner at the surrender of Newcastle to the Scots army, and sent to the castle of Edinburgh, in order to be tried; but being relieved by the marquess of Montrose, he retired to Denmark, where he d.; he m. Barbara Mackenzie, sister to Colin, 1st earl of Seaforth; and left JOHN, his successor, who was succeeded by his grandson,

WALTER-HUTCHINSON ASTON, LORD ASTON, of Forfar, co. Forfar, in Holy Orders, Vicar of Tardebigg, co. Worcester; succeeded his father, Walter, the late lord, 29 July 1805; born 15 Sept. 1769; married, 14 June 1802, Elizabeth, da. of Nathan Haines, D.D., by Susannah, his wife, sister of the late sir John Chudleigh, bart., (who d. 24 Aug. 1833, æt. 67.)

THIS family is descended from Ralph de Aston, co. Stafford; to whose son, Robert, in the time of king Henry 111.. 1260, Roger de Moreland, bishop of Lichfield and Coventry, gave the keeping of the game in Canck wood, and a seat in the manor of Haywood, both in that county.

To the said Robert, whose wife was Sibyl, da. of James de Landa, succeeded str Jolin, their son, who, in the 7th of Edward 111., was knight of the shire co. Stafford, as, in the 18th and 23d, was Roger, his son, who was father of sir John, and he of ur Thomas, the last of whom often served in par liament for that courty, and in the 10th of Henry IV. was sheriff thereof; he m. Etzabeth, sister and h. to Regnald de Leigh, son of Richard, son of Reginald, lord of Parkhall, with whom he had a great estate. Sir Roger, their son, in the 12th of Henry IV., was one of the principal gentry returned by the commissioners for the county: and he marrying Joice, sister and co heiress to Baldwin de Freville, whose ancestors bad been barons of parliament, and were heirs general to the noble families of Marmion and Montford of Beaudesert, by her had Roger, his heir, who m. Isabel, da. of sir William Brereton, of the eo. Chester, had a son, John, who, in the time of kings Ed ward IV. and Richard 111., was sheriff of Staffordshire, and he marrying Elizabeth, da. of John Delves, of Doddin ton, esq.. by her was father of sir John Aston, who, at the marriage of prince Arthur, eldest son of king Henry VII., was created K.B. In the 4th of Henry VIII, he went in the expedi tion into Brittany, and was present at the siege of Terouaine and Tournay, as also at the battle of Spurs, 1513, when, for his conduct and bravery, he was made a knight banneret in the open field; and marrying Joan, da of sir William Littleton, by Helen, his wife, da. and co. h. to Robert Welsh, lord of Wanlip, co. Leicester, he, by that marriage, became possessed of the said manor of Wanlip, and the lordship of Tixal, co. Stafford, the latter being purchased by the Littletons. He had two sons, sir EDWARD, his heir, and Wičiam.

Sir EDWARD, who had been several times sheriff for his own county, d. in 1658, left by Joan, his wife, da. of sir Thomas Bowles, baron of the exchequer, sir WALTER, his heir, and 3 das. : Katharine, m., 1st, Stephen Stanley, esq.; 2dly, sir William Chetwynd, of Ingestrie, co. Stafford; and 3dly, sir Edward Cope, of Canon's Ashby, co. Northampton; Mary, m. Simon Harcourt, of Stanton Harcourt, co. Oxford, ancestor to the earls of Harcourt; and Frances, m. Robert Needham, of Shenton, co. Leicester, ancestor to the earl of Kilmorey, in Ireland.
