MARK SOMERVILLE, LORD SOMERVILLE; born 26 Oct. 1784; succeeded his half-brother, John-Southey, the late lord, 5 Oct. 1819.

THE first of this name on record is sir GAULTIER DE SOMERVILLE, lord of Wichnor, &c., co. Stafford, and Aston-Somerville, co. Gloucester, who came into England with William the Conqueror; he left two sons, WALTER, ancestor of the Somervilles of Wichnor and Aston-Somerville; and WILLIAM, who settled in Scotland temp. David 1., and from whom descended

THOMAS DE SOMERVILLE, baron of Carnwath; was one of the ambassadors who, 1423, came to London to treat for the ransom of king James I. He was a warden of the border, 1424, and sat as one of the assize by whom Murdoch, duke of Albany, was attainted of high treason. His lordship, 136, founded, and, 1424, endowed with some lands, the collegiate church of Carnwath, the burial place of this ancient family; he m. Jane Stewart, da. of sir Alexander Stewart, of Darnlie, and had issue,

cient barony was admitted by the house of lords, 27 May 1723, who resolved that his lordship had a right to the dignity of baron Somerville, and ought to be placed on the roll of the peers of Scotland, in which his ancestor, lord Somerville, sat in parliament, 15 Feb. 1524. His lordship acquired, by purchase, from Somerville, the poet, the last male of the English branch of the family, the estate of Aston-Somerville, co. Gloucester. THE name of Forbes, which is probably local, and derived from the lands of Forbes, co. Aberdeen, is at least as ancient in Scotland as the time of king William the Lion, when we find JOHN DE FORBES possessed of those lands. Fifth in descent from him

ALEXANDER-GEORGE FRASER, LORD SALTOUN, and a Baronet of Nova Scotia ; one of the 16 Representative Peers for Scotland in the present Parliament, C.B., K.M.T., and K.S.G., a Major-General in the Army, and Major Grenadier Guards; born 22 April 1785; succeeded his father, Alexander, the late lord, 13 Sept. 1793; married, March 1815, Catharine, natural da. of Edward, lord Thurlow, lord high chancellor of Great Britain, which lady d. without issue, 9 July 1826.

LAURENCE ABERNETHY, of Saltoun, was created lord Saltoun, 28 June 1445, and had issue 2 sons, WILLIAM and JAMES, successively lords Saltoun; from the latter descended GEORGE, 7th lord, who d. 1600, leaving issue, JOHN, 8th lord; and 2 das., 1. Margaret, m. sir Alexander Fraser, of Philorth; and 2. Jean, m. sir John Lindsay, of Kinfauns. JOHN, 8th lord, left an only son, ALEXANDER, 9th lord, who d. without issue 1669, when the title devolved on his first cousin, sir ALEXANDER FRASER, of Philorth.

The name of Fraser is of great antiquity in Scotland. Sir Simon Fraser enjoyed half the territory of Keith, in East Lothian, as early as the reign of David I.; and GILBERT

FRASER, the immediate ancestor of this family, was sheriff of Traquair in that of Alexander II. His grandson, sir ALEXANDER, was one of the most faithful adherents of king Robert Bruce, and m. his sister, Mary, widow of sir Neil Campbell, of Lochow. Eleventh in descent from him

was

ALEXANDER, who, as before mentioned, became 10th lord Saltoun, and dying 1693, aged 90, was succeeded in that title by his grandson,

WILLIAM, 11th lord, m. Margaret, da. of dr. James Sharpe, archbishop of St. Andrew's, and had issue,
