Crest-A wild boar between two clefts of an oak tree, held together by a chain and lock, all proper.

EVELYN LESLIE LESLIE, EARL of ROTHES, and Baron Leslie, of Rothes; born 8 Nov. 1809; succeeded his mother, Henrietta-Anne, the late countess, 30 Jan. 1819; married, at Malta, 7 May 1831, Louisa, da. of col. Anderson Morshead, colonel commandant of engineers at Malta, and has issue,2. A SON, lord Leslie, b. 4 Feb. 1835.

No Scots surname has been more conspicuous in Europe than that of Leslie. There were at one time three general officers of that name in the service of three sove

1. A DA., b. 1832;

reigns; viz. Walter, count Leslie, of the emperor of Germany; Alexander, earl of Leven, of the king of England; and David Leslie, (afterwards baron Newark,) of Gus

tavus Adolphus, king of Sweden. Several counts of the name of Leslie are settled in Germany, besides many considerable families in France, Russia, and Poland. The family derives its origin from BARTHOLOMEW, a Flemish chief, who settled with his followers in the district of Garioch, co. Aberdeen, temp. king William I., and whose posterity were denominated de Lesley, from their place of residence.

Eighth in descent from Bartholomew, was DAVID de LESLEY, of Lesley, who d. without issue male, about 1440, leaving an only da., who inherited the barony of Lesley, which she carried to her husband, a gentleman of the same namie, ancestor of the Lesleys, of Lesley; but the other estates went to the heir male,

NORMAN DE LESLEY, of Rothes, (son of sir George Leslie, of the same,) m., 1415, Christian, da. of sir John Scton, and had issue,

Marjory, da. of William Sinclair, 3d earl of Orkney, and had issue by her GEORGE, 2d earl, and William, (killed at Flodden Field, 1513,) father of GEORGE, 34 earl. JOHN, 6th earl, who carried the sword of state at the coronation of Charles II., at Scoone, 1651; taken prisoner at the battle of Worcester, and his estate sequestrated. After the restoration he was appointed president of the council, and high treasurer and high chancellor of Scotland. In 1663, he obtained a charter, entailing the earldom of Rothes, in case of failure of issue male of his body, on his elder da.; and was created, 29 May 1680, baron Auchmuty and Caskieberry, viscount of Lugtoun, earl of Lesley, marquess of Ballenbreich, and duke of Rothes, to him and the heirs male of his body; m. Anne, eldest da. of John Lindsay, earl of Crawfurd, and had issue only two das.,

The duke d. 27 July 1681, when the titles conferred on him by the patent of 1680 became extinct, but the earldom of Rothes, in conformity with the settlement of 1663, descended to his eldest da.,

MARGARET, who m., 7 Oct. 1674, Charles, 5th earl of Haddington, on which occasion it was stipulated that the two earldoms should not be united, but that of Rothes descend to her eldest, and Haddington to her 2d son; which settlement was afterwards confirmed by two patents, in 1639 and 1702. The countess had issue,

The earl m., 2dly, 27 June 1763, Mary Lloyd, da. of Mary, countess of Haddington, by her 1st husband, but by her (who rem., 24 May 1770, Bennet Langton, of Langton, co. Lincoln, and d. his widow, 10 Jan. 182000) he had no issue. The earl d. 10 Dec. 1767, and was succeeded by his son,

THE north-eastern district of Aberdeenshire, known by the appellation of Buchan, has, for several centuries, given titles to one of the most ancient earldoms in Scotland. The first on record is Fergus, earl of Buchan, temp. William the Lion; his da. and h. carried the title into the family of Comyn. It was afterwards granted by king Robert II. to his 4th son, sir Alexander Stewart. Christiana, grandda. and h. of John Stewart, 3d earl of that family, m. Robert Douglas; and her grandda., Mary, countess of Buchan, m. JAMES ERSKINE, (3d son of John, 7th earl of Marr,) who thereupon had a charter of the earldom to him and his heirs male and assigns whatever, 25 Nov.

1625, and is called 6th earl of Buchan. He was succeeded by his son JAMES, 7th earl, who d. 1664, leaving an only son, WILLIAM, 8th earl, on whose death, unm., 1695, the title devolved, pursuant to the limitations of 1625, on

DAVID, 4th lord Cardross, great-grandson of Henry, 4th son of John, earl of Marr, and whole brother of James, earl of Buchan, who became 9th earl; m., 1697, Frances, da. and sole h. of Henry Fairfax, of Hust, co. ARCHIBALD. WILLIAM MONTGOMERIE, EARL of EGLINTON, and Lord Montgomerie, in the Peerage of Scotland, and Baron ARDROSSAN, of the United Kingdom; born 29 Sept. 1812; succeeded his grandfather, Hugh, the late earl, 14 Dec. 1819.

ROBERT DE MUMDEGRUMBIE, the first of this name who settled in Scotland, appears to have accompanied Walter, the high steward, (ancestor of the royal house of Stuart,) from Wales, and obtained from him the manor of Eglisham, co. Renfrew, which is still in the possession of the earl of Eglinton. His descendant, JOHN DE MONTGOMERY, of Eglisham, acquired by marriage with Elizabeth, da. and sole h. of sir Hugh de Eglinton, a considerable accession of property, more particularly the lordships of Eglinton and Ardrossan, co. Ayr, which also are still the property of the earl. His grandson, sir ALEXANDER DE MONTGOMERY, was created lord Montgomery before 31 Jan. 1448-9; he d. about 1461, and was succeeded by his grandson, ALEXANDER, 2d lord, who was father of

HUGH, 1st earl of Eglinton, so created 1507, and d. 1545, aged 85, leaving a numerous issue; and having survived his eldest son, was succeeded by his grandson,

Kent, bart., and by her (who m., 2dly, Francis Moore, esq., son of dr. John Moore, and brother to the late gen. sir John Moore, K.B.) had issue,

1. MARY, b. 5 March 1787, m., 28 March 1803, Archibald, lord Montgomery, eldest son of Hugh, 12th earl of Eglinton.

2. SUSANNA, b. 20 May 1788, d. 16 Nov.

The earl d. 30 Oct. 1796, without issue male, and was succeeded by his kinsman,

HUGH, K.T., 12th earl, b. 5 Nov. 1739, who was son of Alexander Montgomery, of Coylsfield, by Lilias, da. and co-heiress of sir Robert Montgomery, of Skermorley, bart., and great-grandson of James Montgomery, of Coylsfield, 4th son of Alexander, 6th earl of Eglinton.
