THE first person of this name who appears in the Scots records, is William de Haya, who settled in Lothian at the close of the 12th century, and had the office of pincerna domini regis (king's butler) during the reigns of Malcolm IV. and William the Lion. He d. about 1170, leaving issue two sons, 1. William, ancestor of the earls of Errol; and 2. Robert, ancestor of the marquess of Tweeddale.

JOHN HAY, 12th in descent from Robert, was, 29 Jan. 1487-8, created lord Hay, of Yester, which title descended in regular succession to WILLIAM, 5th lord, who d. 1576, leaving two sons; 1. WILLIAM, 6th lord, who d. without issue male; and 2. JAMES, 7th lord, who d. 1609, and was succeeded by his son,

THE marquess of Lothian is male representative of the house of Kerr, of Fernihurst, whose ancestor, Ralph Kerr, settled in Teviotdale about 1330; and, at the same time, represents and derives some of his titles from a junior branch of the Kerrs, of Cessfurd (in which family is the title of duke of Roxburgh).

ELIZABETH LEVESON-GOWER, COUNTESS of SUTHERLAND,

and Baroness of Strathnaver, co Sutherland; Dowager Duchess of Sutherland, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom; born 24 May 1765; succeeded her father, William, the 17th earl, 16 June 1766; married, 4 Sept. 1785, George, 1st duke of Sutherland, K.G., (who d. 19 July 1833); for her issue by whom see Duke of SUTHERLAND, in the Peerage of Eng

land.

THIS title is the most ancient of any in Great Britain, having continued, without interruption, in the lineal course of descent, for six centuries. While nearly all the other ancient Scotch titles have been changed in their destinations by resignations and new patents, this earldom has remained unaltered, and been transmitted through twenty generations, in regular order of descent, to ELIZABETH, the present possessor.

WILLIAM, 1st earl of Sutherland, was great-grandson of Freskin, a Fleming, who settled in Scotland during the reign of David I. His father, Hugh Freskin, had obtained the territory of Sutherland forfeited by the earl of Caithness, when he rebelled 1197; and he was created an earl, by Alexander II., in reward of his assistance in crushing the rebellion of Gillespoe, in 1228, and at the same time to balance the power of the earl of Caithness. He d. 1248, and from him the earldom descended, in an unbroken line from father to son, to WILLIAM, 4th earl, who m. Margaret, eldest da. of king Robert I., and full sister to king David II., who erected the earldom of Sutherland into a regality, by charter, 10 Nov. 1345. From William, the title descended to JOHN, 9th earl, who d. without

issue, 1514, when it devolved on his only sister, ELIZABETH, wife of Adam Gordon, of Aboyne, 2d son of George, 2d earl of Huntly, and she was accordingly enfeoffed in the earldom, 30 June 1515. On her death it descended to her grandson and heir, JOHN, 10th earl, and from him, through a series of eight generations, to the present countess's grandfather,

WILLIAM, 17th earl, b. 29 May 1735, m., 14 April 1761, Mary, eldest da. and co-heiress of William Maxwell, of Prestoun, Kircudbright, esq., and had issue, Catherine, d. 3 Jan. 1766, and ELIZABETH, the present countess. The earl d. 16 June 1766, having survived his countess (who d. of the fatigue and anxiety attendant upon nursing her husband in his fatal illness) only 16 days.
