ACCORDING to Chambers, the territory of Gordon, in Berwickshire, anciently of great extent, was granted, during the reign of king David I., to an Anglo-Norman settler, who assumed from it the name of Gordon. In the reign of Robert I., sir Adam de Gordon obtained a grant of the barony of Strathbogie, co. Atholl; his great-greatgrandson, sir Adam Gordon, of Huntley, was killed at Homildon, 1402, leaving an only da. and h., m. to Alexander Seton, 2d son of sir William Seton, of Seton. Their eldest son and h.,

ALEXANDER SETON, lord of Gordon, assumed the surname of Gordon, and was created, 8 Jan. 1449-50, earl of Huntly. He was thrice m.; by his 2d wife he had issue, sir Alexander, ancestor of the Setons of Touch; but the earldom of Huntly was entailed on his issue by his 3d wife, Elizabeth, da. of William, lord Crichton, high chancellor of Scotland, by whom he was father of

GEORGE, 4th earl, was son of John, lord Gordon, eldest son of the 3d earl, who d. in his father's lifetime. He m. Elizabeth, sister of William Keith, 4th earl marischal, and was father of George, 5th earl, whose only son,

THIS branch of the Douglas family is derived from sir William Douglas, of Drumlanrig, son of James, earl of Douglas and Marr, who was slain at Otterburn 1388. Tenth in descent from him was

JAMES, 2d duke of Queensberry, &c., K.G., b. 18 Dec. 1662, created baron of Rippon, marquess of Beverley, and duke of Dover, in England, 26 May 1708, in reward of his services in bringing about the union of the two kingdoms. In 1706, he resigned into the hands of the crown his titles of duke of Queensberry, marquess of Dumfriesshire, earl of Drumlanrig and Sanquhar, viscount of Nith, Torthorwold, and Ross, and baron Douglas, of Kinmont, Middlebie, and Dornock; and obtained a new patent, 17 June 1706, to him and his heirs of entail, (male or female, being descended from William, 1st earl of Queensberrry,) succeeding to the property of Queensberry; but in this surrender and new grant, the titles of marquess and earl of Queensberry, viscount of Drumlanrig, and baron Douglas of Hawick and Tibbers, were not included, but they were left to descend according to the original patents of creation. CHARLES, 3d duke of Queensberry, and 2d duke of Dover, who had, during his father's lifetime, and when not eight years old, 17 June 1706, been created earl of Solway, viscount Tibbers, &c., with remainders to the heirs male of the body of his father not inheriting the title of duke of Queensberry; b. 24 Nov. 1698, m., 10 March 1720, Catherine, da. of Henry Hyde, earl of Clarendon and Rochester, by whom he had issue two sons, Henry and Charles, who both d. in their father's lifetime, s.p.; and the duke dying 22 Oct. 1778, aged 80, his English honours became extinct, but the Scots devolved on his cousin,

WILLIAM, 3d earl of March, grandson, as before stated, of William, earl of March, 2d son of the 1st duke of Queensberry, who thereupon became 4th duke. His grace was K.T., and created, 21 Aug. 1786, baron Douglas, of Amesbury, in England; d. unm. 23 Dec. 1810, when his English barony, and the earldoms of March and Ruglen, became extinct. The dukedom of Queensberry, and the other titles included In the patent of 1706, devolved on the duke of Buccleuch; (see that title;) and the titles of marquess and earl of Queensberry, viscount of Drumlanrig, and baron Douglas, of Hawick and Tibbers, on his kinsman, Charles, 5th marquess, whose descent from the 2d son of the 1st earl we now proceed to trace.

Sir WILLIAM DOUGLAS, of Kelhead, 2d son of the 1st earl of Queensberry, was created a bart., 20 Feb. 1678, in which title he was succeeded by his eldest surviving son, Sir JAMES, who was father of
