HERCULES, lord of Tournon, in Picardy, ancestor of this family, coming into England temp. Henry I., and settling in the lordship of PAULET, Cco. Hants, assumed the name of the place of his residence, as was universally the custom at that period; sixth in lineal descent from him was sir JOHN PAULET, of Paulet and Gotehurst, co. Somerset, m. Elizabeth, da. and h. of sir Thomas Reyney, of Shirston, co. Somerset, and d. 1356, leaving issue a son and heir, sir John, who d. 1378, having m. Elizabeth, da. and h. of William Creedy, of Creedy, co. Devon, by whom he had 2 sons, 1. Thomas, ancestor of the earls Paulet (see that title); and 2. William, serjeant-at-law, from whom descended the dukes of Bolton, extinct, and the present marquess of Winchester.

Sir JOHN PAULET, son and heir of William, m. Constance, grandda. and co-h. of sir Thomas Poynings, lord St. John, of Basing; and was great-grandfather of

Sir WILLIAM PAULET, K. G., who filled many of the highest offices of state in the reign of Henry VIII., and was one of the executors of that king's will. He was lord high treasurer of England in the reigns of Edward VI., Mary, and Elizabeth; created baron St. John, of Basing, 9 March 1538, earl of Wiltshire, 19 Jan. 1549, and marquess of Winchester, 12 Oct. 1551. He m. Elizabeth, da. of sir William Capel, knt., lord mayor of London, (ancestor of the earls of Essex,) and died at a very advanced age, 10 March 1572, having lived to see 103 descendants of his own body. THIS noble family is descended from the same common ancestor with the duke of Leinster, the lords Windsor, the Carews, &c., Otho de Windsor, a powerful baron temp. Edward the Confessor. Walter FitzOtho, Castellan of Windsor 1078, had 2 sons, William, ancestor of the lords Windsor, and Giraldus. Maurice Fitzgerald, eldest son of Giraldus, was ancestor of the duke of Leinster; William Fitzgerald, 2d son of Giraldus, had also 2 sons; from Odo, the eldest, the barons Carew derived their descent; and the 2d, Raymond, (surnamed le Gros,) was father of Maurice, whose son, Thomas, was lord of Kerry, and adopted the surname of Fitzmaurice, which was continued by his descendants.

THOMAS FITZMAURICE, 21st baron Kerry, and 14th in descent from Thomas above named, b. 1668, was advanced to the dignities of viscount Clanmaurice, and earl of Kerry, 17 Jan. 1722. His lordship m., 14 Jan. 1692, Anne, only da. of the celebrated sir William Petty, knt., M.D., (by Elizabeth Waller, in her own right baroness Shelburne, da. of sir Hardress Waller, and relict of sir Maurice Fenton, bart.,) and sister of Henry Petty, earl of Shelburne, and had issue by her, (who d. Nov. 1737,)

JOHN FITZMAURICE, youngest son of Thomas, 21st baron and 1st earl of Kerry, in Ireland, succeeded to the estates of his maternal uncle, HENRY PETTY, earl of Shelburne, (who d. without surviving issue 17 April 1741, when the title became extinct,) on condition of taking the name and arms of PETTY; he was created baron of Dunkeron, viscount Fitzmaurice, 7 Oct. 1751, had the title of earl of Shelburne revived in his person 6 June 1753, and was created a

GEORGE-FERRARS TOWNSHEND, MARQUESS TOWNSHEND, Earl of Leicester, Viscount Townshend, of Rainham, Baron de Ferrars, of Chartley, Compton, Townshend of Lynn, and a Bart., High Steward of Tamworth; born 13 Dec. 1778; succeeded his father, George, the late marquess, 27 July 1811; married, 12 May 1807, Sarah Gardner, only child of William Dunn Gardner, esq., of Chatteris, in the Isle of Ely.

THIS family has long flourished co. Norfolk. JOHN TOWNSHEND, son of sir Roger, was of Rainham, in Norfolk, (the present seat of this family,) as appears by his will, dated 1465. His son, Roger, was returned for Calne, and in the 1st Edward V. was constituted a serjeant-at-law; the following year, was appointed one of the justices of Common Pleas, which office he retained till his death, in 1492; he m. Anne, da. and coheiress of sir William de Brewse, knt., and had a numerous issue; 5th in descent from him was ROGER, who, in 1617, was created a bart., m. Mary, 2d daughter and coheiress of Horatio, lord Vere, of Tilbury, and had issue two sons and five das. ; he d. 1 Jan. 1636, and was succeeded in the baronetcy by his eldest son, sir Roger; on whose death, s.p. in 1640, that title devolved upon his brother,

HORATIO, 1st viscount Townshend; in 1660 he was elected for the co. Norfolk, and was deputed with several other members to wait on the king at the Hague, and invite him to "return to his dominions, and take the government thereof into his own hands;" in consequence of his loyalty, he was advanced to the dignity of the peerage, by the title of Baron Townshend, of Lynn-Regis, co. Norfolk, and, 1682, was created viscount Townshend, of Raynham; he was twice m.; by his first wife, Mary, da. and h. of Edward Lewknor, of Denham, co. Suffolk, he had no issue; by his 2d wife, Mary, da. of sir Joseph Ashe, bart., he had,

CHARLES, 3d viscount, who was summoned to parliament 1723, during the lifetime of his father, as baron Townshend of Lynn, m., May 1723, Audrey, da. and sole h. of Edward Harrison, of Balls, co. Hertford, esq., governor of Fort St. George, Madras, by whom (who d. 9 March 1788) he had issue,

1. GEORGE, 1st marquess.

2. Right hon. CHARLES, m., 15 Aug. 1775, Caroline, da. and h. of John, 2d duke of Argyll and Greenwich, and widow of the earl of Dalkeith, eldest son of the duke of Buccleuch (created baroness GREENWICH, but dying without issue male, Jan. 1794, the barony became extinct). By this lady he had two sons, who d. without issue before their mother, and a da., Anne, b. 29 June 1756, m., 1st, 22 March 1779, Richard Wilson, of Tyrone, in Ireland, esq.; and, 2dly, to John Tempest, of Lincolnshire, esq., and d. 1825.

3. EDWARD, d. 29 June 1731.

4. ROGER, lieut.-col. in the army, killed at Ticonderago, 25 July 1759.

5. AUDREY, m. Roger Orme, co. Devon, esq., and d. Feb. 1781.
