Gloucester, so created by patent, dated 12 July 1838; born 28 Dec. 1777; married, 29 Dec. 1798, Henrietta-Susanna, daughter and only child of Henry, viscount Tracy, on which occasion he took the surname and arms of Tracy by royal license dated 10th of that month; his lordship has issue, 1. FAMILY OF TRACY.

HAROLD, Son of Ralph, earl of Hereford, and grandson of Goda, da. of Ethelred II., king of England, was lord of Sudeley and of Toddington, co. Gloucester, at the time of the general survey made in the reign of William the Conqueror; he m. Maud, da. of Hugh Lupus, earl of Chester, and had issue, Robert, surnamed Ewyas, and

JOHN, lord of Sudeley by marriage with Grace, da. of Henry Tracy, baron of Barnstaple, whose elder son, Ralph, was progenitor of the Sudeleys, barons of Sudeley; William, the younger son, was possessed of Toddington aforesaid, and was surnamed Tracy from his mother's family; and to him succeeded sir Oliver, his son; and his son, sir William, was made high sheriff of the co. of Gloucester by the barons in 1263; he left issue, sir William, sheriff of the said county, in 1319, whose son, Henry, was father of another Henry, whose son, Thomas, was sheriff in 1359, in which he was succeeded by sir John, his son, who was knighted by king Edward III., and in his reign was three several times knight of the shire for the said county of Gloucester.

To him succeeded Henry, his son, father of John Tracy, who was high sheriff 2 Rich. II., as was William, his son, in the 18th, the last of whom was father of another

William, who executed the said office 5 Hen. V., and in the 7th of that reign had

summons to serve the king in person for the defence of the realm; he m. Alice, eldest da. and co-h. of sir Guy de la Spine, lord of Coughton, and had issue, William, his heir, sheriff in 1444 and 1445, father of another William, whose wife was Margery, da. of sir John Pauncefoot, by whom he had Henry, his heir, who m. Alice, da. and co-h. of Thomas Baldington, of Adderbury, co. Oxford, esq., and had 3 sons and 2 das.; of the sons, Ralph, the youngest, was a monk, and sir William, the eldest, was one of the first who embraced the reformed religion, as appears by his will, which was condemned as heretical, and his body taken up and burnt.

He m. Margaret, 2d da. of sir Thomas Throckmorton, of Corse-Court, co. Gloucester, and had issue, William, his heir, and Richard, who was of Stanway, co. Gloucester, and whose son Paul was created a bart. 29 June 1611, which title became extinct on the decease of the 5th bart., in 1677.

WILLIAM, the eldest son, succeeded at Toddington, and m. the da. of sir Simon Digby, of Colshill, co. Warwick, by whom he was father of John, who m. Elizabeth, 2d da. of John, 1st lord Chandos, of Sudeley, and d. 1551, leaving, besides other issue,

Sir JOHN Tracy, his eldest son, who was knighted by king James I., served the office of sheriff of Gloucester, 1609, and advanced by patent, 12 Jan. 1642, to the dignity of viscount Tracy, of Rathcoole; he

m. Anne, da. of sir Thomas Shirley, of Isfield, co. Sussex, knt., and had,

FAMILY OF HANBURY.

The family of Hanbury has been, from a remote period, seated at Hanbury and Elmley Lovett, co. Worcester; John Hanbury, of Hanbury, esq., had issue three sons, from the eldest of whom descended the Hanburys of Hanbury and of Kelmarsh, co. Northampton, the latter of whom are represented by lord Bateman; the third son, Richard, was father of Richard, father of another Richard, father of John Hanbury, who m., 1st, Elizabeth, da. of John Broade, of Elmley Lovett, and had issue; by his 2d wife, he likewise had issue, a son, Richard, of Elmley Lovett, who, by Margery, da. of

Francis Bradley, was father of

The right hon. JOHN METHUEN, lord chancellor of Ireland, and one of the most eminent political characters of his time; his name, as a diplomatist, is well known from having negotiated with the court of Lisbon, in 1703, the treaty called after himself: hem. Mary, da. of Seacole Chevers, of Cummerford, co. Wilts, esq., and d. at Lisbon in 1706, having had issue,

Sir PAUL METHUEN, K. B., entered into the diplomatic service of his country in 1692, when he accompanied the embassy to Lisbon, as secretary; he subsequently succeeded his father there as envoy, and so remained till 4705, when he was accredited envoy to the court of Savoy; upon his father's decease he returned to Portugal as ambassador extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary; in 1709, he was appointed one of the lords of the admiralty; in 1714 he was transferred to the Treasury, and sworn of the Privy Council, and about the same time went ambassador to the court of Madrid: in 1716, he was appointed one of the principal secretaries of state; in 1720, comptroller of the household; in 1725, installed a Knight of the Bath, and appointed treasurer of the household, which office he resigned

in 1730: he d. unm. 1757, when his estates devolved upon his cousin hereafter named.
