The family of Maule is said by Douglas, in his Peerage of Scotland, to be of French origin, deriving its name from the lordship of Maule, near Paris. Guarin de Maule, a younger son of Arnold, lord of Maule, was one of the companions of king William the Conqueror, and left a son, Robert, who, accompanying David I. into Scotland, and obtaining from that monarch grants of lands in Lothian, became founder of the Scotch family of Maule. His great-grandson, sir Peter de Maule, married about 1224, Christian, da. and heiress of William de Valonus, lord of Panmure, with whom he got the lordship of Panmure, of which the family was ever after designated.

PATRICK MAULE, of Panmure, 13th in descent from sir Peter, accompanied king James VI. to England, and was created earl of Panmure, 3 Aug. 1646; he was a great sufferer for his loyalty to kings Charles 1. and II., and dying 22 Dec. 1661, was succeeded by his eldest son,

HARRY MAULE, of Kellie, whod. 1734, leaving, besides other

children, (who all d. without issue,) a son, WILLIAM, and a da., Jean, m. to George, Lord Ramsay, eldest son of the 6th earl of Dalhousie, and grandfather of the present earl of Dalhousi and lord Panmure.

WILLIAM MAULE, son of the hon. Harry, was created a peer of Ireland, 6 April 1743, by the title of Viscount Maule and Earl of Panmure. Having no issue, he settled his estates on his sister's son, George, th earl of Dalhou te, for life, with remainder to his second and other younger sons and their is ue. Pursuant to this settlement, the Panmure estates devolved, after the death of George, 8th earl of Dalhousie, on the present lord Panmure, who has assumed the name and arms of Maule instead of those of Ramsay.
