His lordship is the 2d son of Garret, 1st earl of Mornington, by Anne Trevor, eldest da. of Arthur, 1st viscount Dungannon, and brother to the duke of Wellington, K.G., G.C.B., and the marquess Wellesley, K.G.

THE family of Liddell, which has been twice elevated to the peerage, derives its descent from THOMAS LIDDELL, an alderman of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, who purchased, in 1607, Ravensworth Castle, and other extensive estates in the co. Durham. His grandson,

Sir THOMAS LIDDELL, was created a bart. 2 Nov. 1642, distinguished himself in the defence of Newcastle against the Scotch army 1644, and was returned by the parliament's committee of sequestrations, as one of the "most notorious delinquents" in the co. Durham. He, however, was admitted to compound for his estate at £4000, and d. 1650. Having survived his eldest son, sir Thomas Liddell, knt., he was succeeded by his grandson,

JOHN-GEORGE-WELD FORESTER, BARON FORESTER, of

Willey Park, co. Salop; born 9 Aug. 1801; succeeded his father, CecilWeld, 1st lord, 22 May 1828.

THIS family is of great antiquity in the county of Salop, and descended from one Richard Forestarius, who lived about the reign of Henry III. JOHN FORESTER, of Watling Street, co. Salop, had a grant, from King Henry VIII., of the privilege of wearing his hat in the presence of the king; the original of which grant is now in the possession of lord Forester. Lineally descended from him was

Azure, a fess nebule between three crescents ermine, and in the centre chief point a cross crosslet fitché or--WELD.

Crests-1st. A talbot passant argent collared sable, and lined or-FORESTER. 2d. A wyvern sable, guttée collared and lined, and wings elevated or; on the wing an escallop of the first-WELD.

Supporters-Two talbots argent, collared sable, lined or; and pendent from the collar a bugle horn of the second.

Motto-Semper eadem. Always the same.

JOHN-JAMES STRUTT, BARON RAYLEIGH, of Terling Place, co. Essex; born 30 Jan. 1796; succeeded his mother, Charlotte-Mary, late baroness, 12 Sept. 1836.

THE family of Strutt, of Terling, co. Essex, is said to be descended from the brother of sir Denner Strutt, of Little Warley, in that co., who was created a bart. 1641, and slain in the civil wars on the part of king Charles I., without male issue.

JOHN STRUTT, of Terling, esq., was M.P. in three parliaments for Maldon, co. Essex, m., 1756, Anne, da. of the rev. William Goodday, of Strellay, co. Notts, and had issue, 1. John, d. 1781; 2. JOSEPH-HOLDEN, his heir; 3. William-Goodday, a major-gen. and governor of Quebec. Mr. Strutt d. at the very advanced age of 90, and was succeeded by his son,

JOSEPH-HOLDEN STRUTT, who was educated at Winchester, and afterwards at Brasenose College, Oxford, where, as a gentleman commoner, he took the regular Bachelor's and Master of Arts degrees, and in the year 1790, succeeded his father as representative in parliament for the ancient borough of Maldon, which he uninterruptedly represented till 1827. He m. the lady CHARLOTTE MARY GERTRUDE FITZGERALD, 4th da. of James, duke of

Leinster; who was created, 18 July 1821,
baroness Rayleigh, of Terling Place afore-
said, with remainder to her issue male, by
whom he had,

NICHOLAS VANSITTART, BARON BEXLEY, of Bexley, co. Kent, so created 1 March 1823, P.C., D.C.L., F.R., and A.S.; a Bencher of Lincoln's Inn; born 29 April 1766; married, 22 July 1806, CatharineIsabella Eden, 2d da. of William, 1st lord Auckland, by which lady (who d. 10 Aug. 1810) he had no issue. His lordship was many years Secretary of the Treasury, appointed Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, 1805, and on the death of mr. Perceval in 1812, Chancellor and UnderTreasurer of the Exchequer, which important office he continued to hold till Jan. 1823, when he resigned it, and was immediately elevated to the Peerage as above.
